    BUDDHIST NATIONALISM AND CHRISTIAN EVANGELISM: REARTICULATIONS OF ENMITY AND BELONGING IN POSTWAR SRI LANKA by Neena Mahadev A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland October, 2013 © 2013 Neena Mahadev All Rights Reserved Abstract: Based on two years of fieldwork in Sri Lanka, this dissertation systematically examines the mutual skepticism that Buddhist nationalists and Christian evangelists express towards one another in the context of disputes over religious conversion. Focusing on the period from the mid-1990s until present, this ethnography elucidates the shifting politics of nationalist perception in Sri Lanka, and illustrates how Sinhala Buddhist populists have increasingly come to view conversion to Christianity as generating anti-national and anti-Buddhist subjects within the Sri Lankan citizenry. The author shows how the shift in the politics of identitarian perception has been contingent upon several critical events over the last decade: First, the death of a Buddhist monk, which Sinhala Buddhist populists have widely attributed to a broader Christian conspiracy to destroy Buddhism. Second, following the 2004 tsunami, massive influxes of humanitarian aid—most of which was secular, but some of which was connected to opportunistic efforts to evangelize—unsettled the lines between the interested religious charity and the disinterested secular giving. Third, the closure of 25 years of a brutal war between the Sri Lankan government forces and the ethnic minority insurgent group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), has opened up a slew of humanitarian criticism from the international community, which Sinhala Buddhist populist activists surmise to be a product of Western, Christian, neo-colonial influences.

    FABC Prays for Peace, Prosperity in Sri Lanka By Santosh Digal Colombo: The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) has prayed for peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka that hosted its eleventh plenary assembly. “We pray for Sri Lanka, a land with rich traditions, cultures and religions that it may always find a way forward for prosperity, peace, progress and reconciliation,” said FABC president Cardinal Oswald Gracias on the last day of the Nov 28-Dec 4 plenary. Presiding over the concluding Mass of in St. Lucia’s Cathedral, Kotahena, near Colombo, Cardinal Gracious, Archbishop of Bombay in India, lauded the concerted efforts the Sri Lankan has undertaken with several groups, including religious leaders, to bring peace and harmony in the island nation. Sri Lanka suffered 25 years of civil war that has claimed millions of lives. The conflict ended in May 2009, when the government forces seized the last area controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels (or Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam founded in 1976) to fight for Tamil rights. Cardinal Gracias praised the Catholic Church’s collaboration with the government and others to bring common good in the country. The Church’s efforts are led by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, archbishop of Colombo. “Sri Lanka has a great future and you have our prayers,” Cardinal Gracias said.     The Holy See BENEDICT XVI GENERAL AUDIENCE Saint Peter's Square Wednesday, 20 October 2010 Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today I would like to speak to you about one of the women of the Middle Ages who inspired the greatest admiration; she is St Elizabeth of Hungary, also called St Elizabeth of Thuringia. Elizabeth was born in 1207; historians dispute her birthplace. Her father was Andrew ii, the rich and powerful King of Hungary. To reinforce political ties he had married the German Countess Gertrude of Andechs-Meran, sister of St Hedwig who was wife to the Duke of Silesia. Elizabeth, together with her sister and three brothers, spent only the first four years of her childhood at the Hungarian court. She liked playing, music and dancing; she recited her prayers faithfully and already showed special attention to the poor, whom she helped with a kind word or an affectionate gesture. Her happy childhood was suddenly interrupted when some knights arrived from distant Thuringia to escort her to her new residence in Central Germany. In fact, complying with the customs of that time, Elizabeth's father had arranged for her to become a Princess of Thuringia. The Landgrave or Count of this region was one of the richest and most influential sovereigns in Europe at the beginning of the 13th century and his castle was a centre of magnificence and culture. 2 However, the festivities and apparent glory concealed the ambition of feudal princes who were frequently warring with each other and in conflict with the royal and imperial authorities.
