WEEKDAY MASSES Well done, my good and faithful servant! - Good News Reflection-

Parish Center This Sunday's Gospel reading reminds us not to bury the gifts that God has given us. To do so is English to be a "wicked, lazy servant!"

7:30 AM Daily (Mon – Fri) Ouch. 9:00 AM Saturdays We all have at least one buried talent. There's more we could be doing for the kingdom of God, but we think: "Not me. I'm not gifted enough" or "Someone else can do it better than I can" or Vietnamese "God can't be telling me to do that" or "I don't have the time, the financial resources, the know- 8:30 PM Thursdays how, or good enough health" or "I'm retired now and I've been waiting a long time to finally focus on my own desires."

Spanish There's no holy excuse for wasting anything good that God has given us, but sadly it happens

6:15 PM Fridays quite often, because we don't realize how necessary our talents are for the Church and our joint mission of spreading Christ's influence upon the world.

What's pushing your gifts and talents aside? What's interfering with your usefulness to the kingdom of God? Now is the time to open wide your potential and release your talents into God's EUCHARISTIC ADORATION plans! Last Wednesday of the month – We are all gifted "enough" to make a difference for God's kingdom, because our abilities come Original Church from him. We're his servants, and it's up to him, not us, to decide what we're capable of doing. Even the homebound and the bedridden have a divine purpose that can be accomplished in their 8:00 AM-6:00 PM circumstances and sufferings. entrance of the Original Church. Have you ever been challenged by the question: "If God is so good, why does he allow evil to happen?" The answer is: It's not God that allows it. It's we who allow it! We are the Body of Christ on earth. We are his hands and feet and vocal chords and embracing arms. Jesus truly wants to SACRAMENT OF make our world more heavenly, but too many of us have seemingly good reasons to bury the gifts RECONCILIATION that could make a difference. Indeed, this is wicked laziness!

BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH -November -

Black Catholic History Month was established in 1990. November was chosen as the appropriate month because it marks special days for two prominent Catholics of color. The first is St. Augustine of Hippo whose birthday is 11/13. The other is St. whose feast Day is 11/3.

Catholics of African descent have enriched Catholic . However, racism and prejudice in American society and within our Church has created serious challenges and consequence for and African born Catholics. Still Black Catholics continue to deal with such obstacles and remain committed and crucial players in The Church; enriching parishes and communities through their faith, works of mercy and as advocates of justice.

Although our Black Catholic History celebration has been dampened this year by the pandemic; we are reminded that St. Mary’s parish is Black Catholic History. Her history and roots are a reminder of God’s love for all of his creation. Let us pause this November to reflect upon our past and how far our roots have spread. May we also take a moment look into the history of just a few of our Black Catholic historians whose Christ like lives have now become revered by the we love.

Let us “Say their names!”

Blessings! We would like to acknowledge all birthdays for this coming week * November 15-21

In these uncertain times we look for the signs of the Lord’s blessings, protection, and grace. We want to be recognized by the Lord for the faith we have and the good works we do. What are these signs of faith, hope and love present at St. Mary’s? While our activities remain limited due to health concerns, our planning has not been. In recent posts you were offered information concerning the future of St. Mary’s Fundraising to build an education/pastoral center; expansion of an outdoor area for prayer, and the Development of an active Outreach program to care for the poor. Faith formation, a place for community gathering, Prayer and Service, are all the pieces that are essential for St. Mary’s. Each piece speaks of the faith, hope, and love of the Lord for each one of us and our choice to love one another.

I would like to introduce another piece for our future planning and embrace these uncertain times with plans about safety and security for you while at worship and other weekly programs. On Thursday, November 19 at 6:00 p.m. we will have an officer from the Greensboro Police Department who will give a presentation on Safety and Security specifically for those men and women who are our ushers/ministers of hospitality within our various communities. The presentation will be given by Officer Douglas Campbell, our community liaison. I strongly encourage anyone who is concerned about the safety of others and security at St. Mary’s to attend. In addition, this Thursday I will sign a contract for enhanced security from one of the local security companies. We will join many Churches in the area who have pursued these courses of action for the wellbeing of their congregations. While it is unfortunate to take such actions in preventing harm, we choose to do all of this out of our love for our brothers and sisters. .

Limiting our numbers who can be within the Church at any given moment is always about good safety and health for each of us. I encourage you to be mindful that these concerns outweigh our desires to be physically present. I encourage that you can see Mass outside or on your social media. The Eucharist will come to you outside or in your cars. Locking the Church doors helps us to be aware in how many can be present, but it is also an essential security measure. .

I am thankful to the men and women who assist in many of these activities doing so out of their goodness and sense of duty. Without the generosity of these men and women and your Sunday contributions St. Mary’s would be failing to live up to the mission of Christ. The generosity of these men and women and your Sunday contributions help in maintaining our Faith Formation programs, the Vietnamese TNTT youth programs, The Youth Group, Outreach to the poor, and a host of other programs. I encourage you in this time of an economic downturn, and if it possible to offer a little more from your treasury to the Church. Even before the pandemic causing the economic collapse St. Mary’s was just above our financial needs. The last 8 months has caused havoc for you and your parish. Even with the measures taken to reduce the costs we still are financially hurting. Some of the more drastic steps that have been taken without previous disclosure is this: I’ve reduced the staff from two full time salaries to one as well as the priest’s salary. I recently let go of the youth minister and hired a part-time woman as a Director of Faith Formation to replace Ms. Genevieve at a reduced salary. Our two part-time maintenance workers together make less than half of our former maintenance and building manager. The savings due to these actions are in the tens of thousands of dollars. I thank you for your kindnesses and generous responses already shown during these uncertain times.

May the Lord bless you and all your endeavors. Fr. Bill
