H. Mackay, The Board of Commissioners, and Members of City Council: Ladies and Gentlemen: It gives me great pleasure to submit to you my annual report, reviewing activities in the Parks and Recreation Department during the year 1954. In spite of obstacles and limited appropriat.ions p we must en deavour each year to provide beautiful parks and the broadest recrea tional opportunities within our available budget, but it is truly grati fying to recall the ever-increasing number of children at their games in playgrounds, and the resplendent, profuse foliage of our parks - the fulfillment of a bountiful season. Fol.Low.Lng is a summary of the major projects of this department during the year, cumulative statistical data, and an outline of plans for future expansion. PROGRESS IN Y 54g Paralleling industrial and private construction which reached a new peak during the past season, the City Parks Department undertook the largest expansion program in its history, development in the newer sub divisions of the city having accounted for the major portion of our ex penditure. Landscaping projects this year were greatly benefitted by the excellent growing season, and later in the year, the glorious autumn weather enabled us to complete many smaller projects - work which would otherwise be suspended. In accordance with an agreement with civic officials, this de partment was made responsible for the landscaping of the Gladmer Housing Developments 9 and this was entirely successfuL However, trees and ffirubs have yet to be planted in Gladmer Park, and intentions are to begin this as early as possible in the coming season. Development at lOth Street Northwest, on the east side, was con tinued during the year, and it is hoped that this park area will be com pleted next year. Work on this area has been exceptionally difficult be cause of the terrain, the hill being very steep. Before further land~p ing can be done however 9 8th Avenue must be widened. The west side, at onds f this location~ is Provincial Government property, and is being de\reloped under supervision of the Parks Department. An agreement with the city provides that the government will pay the expense of construction, and the City Parks Department will maintain the area for a period of twenty years. These two park areas on either side of the highway make a very effective entrance to the city, and it is regrettable that similar areas were not reserved at the entrances of the other arterial highways to the city. page 1 The City of Calgary, Corporate Records, Archives Archives Records, Corporate Calgary, of City The Parks and Recreation Department Department and Recreation Parks At 26th Street and 35th Avenue Southwest a combination floral and recreational area was fully developed, with the erection of play ground apparatus donated by the South Calgary Kiwanis. We are very much indebted to this organization for their contributions to the city, and especially foi' their work in the South Calgary district. Another new park and recreation area was constructed at 13th Street and 36th Avenue South west where trees and shrubs have been placed to enhance the appearance of the district. Also flower beds have been dug in preparation for spring seeding. This land was originally reserved for recreational purposes, but residents here submitted a petition requesting both an ornamental and a play area, a plan which civic officials approved. Again in the southwest part of the city, at Richmond Road, a sunken park was graded and levelled, this to be completed during the coming year, and at 47th Avenue and 17th Street Southwest, half of a city block was prepared for future use as a skating rink. This will be of great value to Calgary sports groups, and seemingly the residential areas expand south or westward, necessitating the development of more and larger recreation facilities in these districts. In the northwest portion of the city several.new sites were partially developed, including Briar Hill Park which comprises approxi. mately five acres. Provision has been made for a skating rink, recrea tional park, as well as an ornamental area here, as this is in the heart of a rapidly growing district_ Also in this general area are located the Parkdale Recreation grounds and Parkdale Park. As the terrain here resembled a gravel bar, grading, levelling and preparation of a seed bed seemed rather costly. However, when landscaping is completed, the otherwise useless piece of property will provide a valuable playfield and park. At Bowview, approximately two-thirds of the park was completely developed

Burrows Submitted in fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, May 2014 3 University of Sussex Karen K. Burrows Escaping the Honeytrap: Representations and Ramifications of the Female Spy on Television Since 1965 Summary My thesis interrogates the changing nature of the espionage genre on Western television since the middle of the Cold War. It uses close textual analysis to read the progressions and regressions in the portrayal of the female spy, analyzing where her representation aligns with the achievements of the feminist movement, where it aligns with popular political culture of the time, and what happens when the two factors diverge. I ask what the female spy represents across the decades and why her image is integral to understanding the portrayal of gender on television. I explore four pairs of television shows from various eras to demonstrate the importance of the female spy to the cultural landscape.

GENDER UNDER TORTURE: HOW GENDER SHAPES AND IS SHAPED BY TORTURE by MARITA GRONNVOLL (Under the Direction of Celeste M. Condit) ABSTRACT This dissertation is an examination of media discourses pertaining to torture as an interrogation method in the “war on terrorism.” The major focus is the circular relationship between gender and torture. The project scrutinizes the ways that gender norms have influenced perceptions of torture and torture has influenced what are believed to be acceptable gender behaviors. Through an analysis of both news media and popular entertainment television programs, this dissertation explores the implications for linking gender and torture when these concepts are taken up and disseminated through mass media. With the “enemy” in the war on terrorism being described in media and social discourses as demonically brutal, a cultural longing is revealed for a warrior hero who can effectively protect “us” from “them.” This new hero is distinctly masculine, remorseful when forced to perform actions that cross the line into torture, but, at the same time, unrepentant. As one who fights for the side of good (Judeo- Christianity) against evil (Islam), this new hero is an archetypal messiah. The creation of this new hero in the shape of a messiah effectively guarantees that that shape will not be female. The culturally perceived defectiveness of women physically, morally, and mentally means that they could never rise to the level of messianic saviors. A messianic hero would necessarily recall the image of Christ, thus requiring this hero to be male. A masculine, messianic hero is portrayed as being in a position to use torture effectively to save the world, but discourses circulating in mass media suggest that this is something women, no matter how professional and well trained, are incapable of.

  • Violent Femmes: Women As Spies in Popular Culture / Rosie White
Violent Femmes The female spy has long exerted a strong grip on the popular imagination. With reference to popular fiction, film and television Violent Femmes examines the figure of the female spy as a nexus of contradictory ideas about femininity, power, sexuality and national identity. Fictional repre- sentations of women as spies have recurrently traced the dynamic of women’s changing roles in British and American culture. Employing the central trope of women who work as spies, Rosie White examines cultural shifts during the twentieth century regarding the role of women in the professional work- place. Beginning with an examination of the male spy in popular fiction, White’s revealing book then moves on to examine female spies, comparing and contrasting numerous female spies in investigative case studies with the aim of answering the following questions: Howhavedepictionsofthefemalespychangedoverthetwentiethcentury? What can Modesty Blaise tell us about women in the 1960s and 1970s? Does Alias offer an ideal vision of the working woman in the twenty-first century? Are women in Western culture now seen as agents of their own futures? In the twentieth century, a period when women’s relationship with public life and state authority was changing radically, the female spy in all her forms offers a suggestive account of the effects of, and resistances to, such transformations. Violent Femmes examines the female spy as a figure in popular discourse which simultaneously conforms to cultural stereotypes and raises questions about women’s roles in British and American culture, in terms of gender, sexuality and national identity. Immensely useful for a wide range of courses such as Film and Television Studies, English, Cultural Studies, Women’s Studies, Gender Studies, Media Studies, Communications, and History, this book will appeal to students from undergraduate level upwards.

Hub issue 79 15TH MAR 2009 CONTENTS: FICTION: SBIR Proposal by Richard K. Lyon REVIEW: Alias Season 1 Evil Ways FEATURE: Radiodays by Neil Gardner Hub Magazine is Sponsored by Harper Collins EDITORIAL: by ellen j allen It looks as though this year is shaping up to be another good one for lovers of sf, f and horror films. The adaptation of Alan Moore’s Watchmen is already out in cinemas, Monsters vs Aliens will be out at the start of April, followed a month later by X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Exciting trailers are running for that last film, as they are for Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Terminator Salvation, not to mention Lesbian Vampire Killers... With the exception of Watchmen, Monsters vs Aliens and Lesbian Vampire Killers, all of these are franchise films and fortunately, they all look like they’re very well made indeed. I’m looking forward to watching all of them, which should (almost) be enough to make up for the lack of a series of Doctor Who this year... Not to miss them out altogether, here are a few books to watch out for this year. A Little Stranger by Sarah Waters promises to be a nicely chilling ghost story. A Memory of Light, the final volume in the enormous Wheel of Time series should be on our shelves at the beginning of October, completed by Brandon Sandersen after the death of Robert Jordan.

  • El Pare, La Mare I El Complot
