… has a long tradition. Baron von Drais invented the bicycle in Karlsruhe in 1817. At a time when food was short and the use of a horse was a luxury, the Karlsruhe-based inventor was looking for an alternative means of conveyance. And so the idea of the bicycle was born. In the summer of 1817 Drais rode the 50 kilometres from Karlsruhe to Kehl in just four hours – half the time it took the post chaise.

The best conditions for new ideas

Carl Benz was born and educated in Karlsruhe, and it was here that he hit upon the idea of designing what he coined a ‘self-powered road vehicle’. And in 1905, long before the Volkswagen came into existence, cars built in the Gaggenau car factory – the world’s oldest, dating back to 1895, and long-time home of the Unimog – were being advertised as ‘Liliput-Volks-Automobil’ (Liliput People’s Car). Daimler AG is currently developing its Gaggenau Mercedes-Benz plant into a worldwide centre of excellence for mechanical transmissions. At its Wörth base, the company already runs the largest truck factory in the world, and is currently building a state-of-the-art development and testing centre.

But the inventors, scientists and entrepreneurs are not resting on their laurels. Every day new companies are being set up by enterprising young entrepreneurs, but also by scientists in our research centres who are setting their own examples of how technology can be transferred from science to business. In the Technologiefabrik Karlsruhe alone, some 290 high tech companies have been set up over the past few years, creating 5,5000 new jobs. The Mercedes Benz factory in Rastatt is one of the automotive industry’s most modern production facilities. The Baden-based car factory employs around 5,500 people and has produced well over 2.5 million Mercedes A- and B- Class since the plant opened in 1992. Late 2011 will see the first of the next generation A- and B-Class Mercedes roll off the production line. Daimler AG is investing €600 million in this. More than 6,000 people work at the Gaggenau Mercedes-Benz plant. Here they produce transmissions for cars and trucks, as well as axles and torque converters for utility vehicles. At the Mercedes-Benz factory in Wörth, the world’s biggest truck assembly plant, an 11,000-strong workforce produces trucks, Unimogs and Zetros.
