Altitudinal Distribution of Papilionidae Butterflies Along with Their Larval Food Plants in the East Himalayan Landscape of West Bengal, India

Species Richness (R) and Species Diversity (H′) are said to be highest between 1200 - 1400 masl (meters above sea level). In contrast, lowest values of Species Richness and Species Diversity occur at the highest altitude of 3000 masl and above. Maximum number of individuals occurs be- tween 900 - 1100 masl while the minimum number of individuals was present at the highest alti- tude of 3000 masl or above. 35 species of plants belonging to 6 families served as the larval food plant of these butterflies. Thus the presence of suitable larval host plants probably governs the al- titudinal distribution of these papilionid species of butterflies. 30.77% of butterfly species are strictly monophagous in nature. EXPLORING THE DIVERSITY OF BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA) AT DIFFERENT ELEVATIONS IN GENTING HIGHLANDS AND THE VALIDITY OF GRAPHIUM SPECIES IN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA KAREN CHIA HUEY MIN DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES FACULTY OF SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA KUALA LUMPUR 2014 ABSTRACT Butterflies play an ecological role as pollinators, prey, defoliators and herbivores. They are in abundant and diverse in many ecosystems. However, they are serves as indicators of ecosystem change and predict environmental alternation. This study was conducted to (1) compare the attractiveness of ten types of fruit bait and make recommendations on the most efficient fruit bait types for trapping butterflies in the South East Asian tropical forest; (2) investigate how butterfly diversity is related to elevation at Genting Highlands in Peninsular Malaysia; and (3) explore the phylogenetic relationships within Graphium and the validity of Pathysa. The bait trap is one of the most common methods used for trapping butterflies in the field and particularly for fruit feeding butterflies. The present study was conducted to determine the efficiency of traps baited with ten different fruit baits. Traps were baited with either: banana (Musa spp), chiku (Manikara sapota), citrus (Citrus aurantifolia), dragon fruit (Hyllocereus undatus), guava (Psidium guajava), papaya (Carica papaya), pineapple (Ananas comosus), rose apple (Syzygium malaccense), star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) at Ulu Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. A total of 194 Nymphalids butterflies of 28 species were recorded in our study. Banana was found to be the most attractive bait trapping a total of 14 species of Nymphalids. -

NANDI Zoological Survey o.f India, Calcutta INTRODUCTION The present study is based on the material mainly collected by the various parties of Zoological Survey of India during the period from 1964 to 1976, and the old material in the National Zoological Collections (abbreviated in the text as N. Z. C.). The various parties, which collected the material from the Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands during the months from September to May, were led by the following scientists of the department : Dr. B. S. Lamba (March to April, 1964); Drs. A. Daniel & H. K. Bhowmik (March to April, 1966); Dr. B. K. Tikader (February to March, 1970 and April to May, 1971); Dr. B. Dutta (January to February, 1972); Drs. K. Raddiah & P. T Cherian (September to October, 1972); Sri K. S. Pradhan, Dr. G. S. Arora and Sri D. N. Nandi (December 1972 to January, 1973); Dr. G. K. Srivastava (February to March, 1975) ; and Dr. P. K. Maiti and S/Shri D. K. MandaI and D. N. Nandi (December 1975 to January, 1976). The paper deals with 21 species and subspecies, distributed over five genera under three tribes viz, Troidini (Troides, Parides and Pachliopta); Papilionini (Papilio); and Leptoc;rcini (Graphium). It is interesting to observe that the species like Pachliopta hector and Papilio memnon agenor, common on Indian mainland, are rare in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and have never been collected by any of the recent parties. -

We tested the abilities of neonate larvae of the Lauraceae-specialist, P. troilus, and the generalist Eastern tiger swallowtail, Papilio glaucus (both from Levy County, Florida) to eat, survive, and grow on leaves of 22 plant species from 7 families of ancient angiosperms in Australia, Rutaceae, Magnoliaceae, Lauraceae, Monimiaceae, Sapotaceae, Winteraceae, and Annonaceae. Clearly, some common Papilio feeding stimulants exist in Australian plant species of certain, but not all, Lauraceae. Three Lauraceae species (two introduced Cinnamomum species and the native Litsea leefeana) were as suitable for the generalist P. glaucus as was observed for P. troilus. While no ability to feed and grow was detected for the Lauraceae-specialized P. troilus on any of the other six ancient Angiosperm families, the generalist P. glaucus did feed successfully on Magnoliaceae and Winteraceae as well as Lauraceae. In addition, some larvae of one P. glaucus family attempted feeding on Citrus (Rutaceae) and a small amount of feeding was observed on southern sassafras (Antherosperma moschatum; Monimiaceae), but all P. glaucus (from 4 families) died on Annonaceae and Sapotaceae. -
