Mycosphere 5(6), 770–789, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/5/6/8 Abstract A detailed morphological and anatomical investigation of the type specimens of the current- ly accepted species of Parmelinella (Parmeliaceae, Lichenized Fungi) confirmed the current spe- cies delimitations and revealed additional characteristics. The name Parmelia mutata is removed from synonymy with Parmelinella versiformis and proposed as a new combination, and Parmelia nimandairana is removed from Parmelinella wallichiana and proposed as another new combina- tion. Parmelinella salacinifera is proposed as a new combination. A lectotype is designated for Parmelinella versiformis. A key to all currently accepted species of the genus is presented. Key words – Canoparmelia – Parmelina – Parmotremopsis – cilia – salazinic acid Introduction Elix & Hale (1987) installed the genus Parmelinella for three species previously included in Parmelina (P. wallichiana, P. manipurensis and P. simplicior) with broad, rotund lobes, an emaculate thallus, sparse, simple cilia more or less restricted to the axils, simple black rhizines, ellipsoid ascospores, short cylindrical conidia, and salazinic and consalazinic acids in the medulla. A key for the differentiation of this and some further newly proposed genera, all segregates of Parmelina, and a table containing many characteristics for them was included with the descriptions of the genera. -

Taxonomic recognition of some species-level lineages circumscribed in nominal Rhizoplaca subdiscrepans s. lat. Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków, Poland ABSTRACT Background. Rhizoplaca subdiscrepans (Nyl.) R. Sant., a saxicolous, placodioid lichen, is considered to have a worldwide distribution in warm-temperate to boreal-arctic areas in Asia, Europe and North America. However, recent studies have revealed that this species includes five unrecognized species-level lineages—‘subd A, B, C, D and E'. During research focused on the diversity of saxicolous lichens in mountainous areas of southern Poland, some interesting representatives of the genus Rhizoplaca were found. The main aim of our study was to determine the taxonomic status of the collected specimens by means of molecular tools and a comparative analysis of similar herbarium materials. Methods. Detailed morphological, anatomical and chemical examinations of reference material from Asia, Europe and North and South America focused primarily on a selected group of lecanoroid taxa with a placodioid thallus. In addition, 21 new generated sequences representing Lecanora pseudomellea, Protoparmeliopsis muralis, Rhizoplaca opiniconensis, R. subdiscrepans s. lat. and R. phaedrophthalma were selected for molecular study using the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS rDNA), together with 95 available GenBank sequences mainly from the genus Rhizoplaca. Apparently it was restricted to the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands. However, during the study of the genus Cladonia in the Mediterranean region, new populations from 44 localities were found in: south France, Sardinia, south Italian peninsula, Crete and continental Greece. Distribution models based on MaxEnt, GLM, GAM and MARS algorithms were used to estimate the potential distribution of C. subturgida. Sicily, Corsica and the north of Africa were regions with suitable climatic conditions for C. subturgida where it has not been reported yet. The climatic variables with greatest relative influence in the C. subturgida distribution were the Precipitation of Warmest Quarter and the Annual Precipitation. Additionally, the ITS rDNA region was used to study the genetic variation of this species across its distribution area. Eleven haplotypes were found, one of them widely distributed through its geographical range. AMOVA analyses indicated lack of geographical structure. Keywords Cladoniaceae . Distribution modelling . Natural England: Kingley Vale NNR Foreword My dissertation project and internship took place in an ancient yew woodland reserve called Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve. Kingley Vale NNR is managed by Natural England. My dissertation deals with the biodiversity in these woodlands. During my stay in England I learned many things about the different aspects of nature conservation in England. First of all I want to thank Katherine Birch (manager of Kingley Vale NNR) for giving guidance through my dissertation project and for creating lots of interesting days during my internship. I want to thank my tutor Isabelle Joos for suggesting Kingley Vale NNR and guiding me during the year. As such, the new combination Parmelinella cinerascens (Lynge) Benatti & Marcelli is proposed here. The species is described in detail and an epitype is selected to aid interpretation due the poor condition of the holotype. KEYWORDS. – Axillary cilia, Parmelinella wallichiana, salazinic acid INTRODUCTION Canoparmelia Elix & Hale, a segregate of the eciliate parmelioid lichen genus Pseudoparmelia Lynge (Hale 1976), is characterized by the typically gray or rarely yellow-green thalli containing cortical atranorin and chloroatranorin (or rarely usnic acid), the 3.05.0 mm rotund or subrotund eciliate lobes, the white medulla, the black lower surface with naked brown margins and simple concolorous rhizines, small ellipsoid ascospores 1014 68 m, and fusiform or bifusiform conidia 710 m in length (Elix 1993, Elix et al. 1986). When the genus Parmelinella was segregated from Parmelina Hale, only three species originally in Parmelina had been recombined into Parmelinella (Elix & Hale 1987). However, the species with small axillary cilia discussed in this paper was misplaced in Pseudoparmelia sensu Hale, and later automatically transferred to Canoparmelia. Working with -

Non essendosi svolto il nostro convegno annuale sapete già che non troverete in questo volume gli Atti: a inizio volume l’attualità esterna arriva in queste pagine, in due contributi narrativi scritti durante il lockdown e, purtroppo, nel ricordo dedicato a Fausto Ceni. Riprendono le interviste, con Marco Ciardi, per il piacere di dialogare con realtà al di fuori del mondo lichenologico, a seguire un excursus nell’illustrazione lichenologica, un interessante contributo sui licheni acquatici, e un punto sulle reti di biomonitoraggio. Sul finale di volume si torna alle attività dello scorso anno, con il resoconto dell’escursione e i riassunti di alcuni dei miniseminari di avvicinamento, riuniti qui nell’auspicio che interessino nuovi aspiranti lichenologi. Solo a metà mattinata i raggi del sole raggiungevano le fronde e il sottobosco. Creavano fili dorati trapassando le verdi foglie nuove della primavera. Nell’atmosfera senza brezza, la luce esaltava il volo degli insetti e i granelli di polvere e pollini. Le sagome bitorzolute degli immensi castagni, dalla corteccia nodosa e umida, creavano giochi di ombre sul terreno ricco di foglie e piante e humus. -

Two sections are recognized: section Parmelzna with 30 species widely distributed in temperate to tropical montane regions and section Myelochroa with 17 terpene- containing species concentrated in eastern and southern Asia. The genus is most closely related to Parmotrema hlassalongo. Five new species, P. crassata Hale, P. degelii Hale P. indica Hale, P. rhytidodes Hale, and P. schindleri Hale, are described, and six new combinations proposed, P. amagiensis (Asahina) Hale, P. damaziana (Zahlbruckner) Hale, P. endoleuca (Taylor) Hale, P. irrugans (Nylander) Hale, P. jamesii (Hale) Hale, and P. pastillifera (Harmand) Hale. New combinations are also made for Hypotrachyna baguioensis (Hale) Hale and Parmotrema nylanderi (Lynge) Hale.
