Moore Associate Professor Dept. of Political Science Cal Poly State University 1 Grand Avenue San Luis Obispo, CA 93407 805-756-2895 [email protected] 1 Introduction In other recent work I have looked at whether normative political theorizing can be found in the texts of Early or Canonical Buddhism, especially the Nikāya collections and the Vinaya texts governing monastic life, since those texts are viewed as authentic and authoritative by all modern sects of Buddhism.1 In this paper I turn to investigate Buddhist normative political theorizing after the early or Canonical period, which (following Collins2 and Bechert3) I treat as beginning during the life of the Buddha (c. sixth-fifth centuries BCE) and ending in the first century BCE, when the Canonical texts were first written down. At first glance this task is impossibly large, as even by the end of the early period Buddhism had already divided into several sects and had begun to develop substantial regional differences. Over the next 2,000 years Buddhism divided into three main sects: Theravada, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayāna. It also developed into numerous local variants as it mixed with various national cultures and evolved under different historical circumstances. To give just one example, the Sri Lankan national epic, the Mahāvaṃsa, is central to Sinhalese Buddhists’ understanding of what Buddhism says about politics and very influential on other Southeast Asian versions of Buddhism, but has no obvious relevance to Buddhists in Tibet or Japan, who in turn have their own texts and traditions. -

Sujatha Abstract Vijayanagara an out-and-out an economic state which ushered broad outlay of trade and commerce, production and manufacture for over- seas markets. Its coinage had played definitely a greater role in tremendous economic activity that went on not just in India, but also across the continent. Its cities were bustled with traders and merchandise for several countries of Europe and Africa. The soundness of their economy depended on a stable currency system. The present paper discusses the aspects relating to the coinage of Vijayanagara Empire and we could enumerate from these coins about their administration. Watts Keio University Tokyo, Japan Historical Development of SEB: Asian Colonial Era 16th to 20th Centuries 4 Responses to Modernity v Buddhist Nationalism: Modern Nationalism is most often characterized by the fusing together of a specific ethnic group and their religious heritage to a nation-state with specifically defined borders. Buddhist Nationalism was initially part of the anti-colonial struggle against the West, but after Asian emancipation, it became a force against minority groups and cultural diversity as part of the complex renegotiation of national borders and identities in the Post WWII Era. v Socially Engaged Buddhism (SEB): SEB also arose as a response to the colonial domination of the West. However, it has been a more open minded movement that has not allied itself with the state and sought solutions to social problems through pan-Asian solidarity, inter-religious cooperation, and alliances with progressive forces in the West. 4 Responses to Modernity v Buddhist Socialism: The early development of socialism and communism in Europe had an important impact on Asians as a modern but anti- colonial and liberative ideology. Many Buddhists found socialist concepts to be in line with Buddhist teachings and the rules of the monastic order. v Market Buddhist: In Asian nations that did not embrace communism, some Buddhist groups have tried to align Buddhist teachings with capitalist values of economic growth and enjoying a prosperous life as a sign of virtue. Buddhism, Power and Political Order
BUDDHISM, POWER AND POLITICAL ORDER Weber’s claim that Buddhism is an otherworldly religion is only partially true. Early sources indicate that the Buddha was sometimes diverted from supra- mundane interests to dwell on a variety of politically related matters. The significance of Asoka Maurya as a paradigm for later traditions of Buddhist kingship is also well attested. However, there has been little scholarly effort to integrate findings on the extent to which Buddhism interacted with the polit- ical order in the classical and modern states of Theravada Asia into a wider, comparative study. This volume brings together the brightest minds in the study of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. Their contributions create a more coherent account of the relations between Buddhism and political order in the late pre-modern and modern period by questioning the contested relationship between monastic and secular power. In doing so, they expand the very nature of what is known as the ‘Theravada’. This book offers new insights for scholars of Buddhism, and it will stimulate new debates. Ian Harris is Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Cumbria, Lancaster, and was Senior Scholar at the Becket Institute, St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford, from 2001 to 2004. He is co-founder of the UK Association for Buddhist Studies and has written widely on aspects of Buddhist ethics. In spite of their Tdifferent forms in different countries and regions, current world developments have a common point: the West (since the Renaissance) and the East (since the past century) have developed along materialistic lines. As a result, various things have been replaced with others in both the environmental and human fields. For the past decades some Buddhist scholars, in the face of so many social changes, have attempted to reassess the role of Buddhism in the new situation of the world. Hence, a question is raised as to whether traditional Buddhism, which has shaped the civilization of many peoples in the East for centuries, may remain adaptive and fluid in the modern era. Generally speaking, there are two discernible different tendencies among those scholars. Some scholars such as Thich Nhat Hanh, Walpola Rahula, Sulak Sivaraksa, H.H. the Dalai Lama, Robert Thurman, and so on, maintain that there remains a continuity between Buddhism today and Buddhism of the past. Although the world is changing rapidly with its various developments, humanity’s fundamental sufferings and the best ways of dealing with them remain the same as what are already explicitly formulated in most Buddhist teachings. Therefore, Buddhism today, whatever new forms it may take on, is essentially contiguous with its tradition. In the words of Sivaraksa: “To be of help we must become more selfless and less selfish. -

I examine the challenges for and successes of women engaged in local politics in Cambodia through interviews and observation of four elected women commune council members. Cambodian’s political culture, beginning with the post-colonial period up until the present, has been guided by strong centralized leadership, predominantly vested in one individual. The women who entered the political system from the commune council elections of 2002 address a political philosophy of inclusiveness and cooperation. The guiding organizational philosophy of inclusiveness and cooperation is also evident in other women centered organizations that have sprung up in Cambodia since the early 1990s. My research looks at how women’s role in society began to change during the Khmer Rouge years, 1975 to 1979, and has continued to transform, for some a matter of necessity, while for others a matter of choice. -

It conveys the first steps of truth, the realistic aspects of things, and in a few words it embodies living voice of humanity. Any civilization through its own language has a collection of proverbs which are capable to hold on the signications facing elaborate philosophy and sophisticated thought. Mankind has created various tools to satisfy the need of all kind. Otherwise, a proverb could be viewed as a tool functioning like a whip made of words. human being lashes a whip against the ground to call upon anyone to a good sense in life as a proverb is the fruit of experiences through generations. A proverb may be considered as a lengthening of human intelligence as well as a tool is an extension of hands. Mankind has laid down a wisdom and a proverb, in its simple expression, is still an evidence through ages. Does one know when a proverb will reach a regression? Facing the prowess of the forthcoming technology, spiritual feeling would have a restricted place as life is more surrounded by bodily needs, by diseases, by a progressive degradation of natural resources and by an ill- working of living framework.
