PRE-ELECTION ENVIRONMENT IN THE REGIONS OF GEORGIA Adjara, Imereti and Samtskhe-Javakheti 2020 Pre-election environment in the regions of Georgia (Adjara, Imereti and Samtskhe-Javakheti) HUMAN RIGHTS CENTER NGO HUMAN RIGHTS CENTER (HRC) was established on December 10, 1996 in Tbilisi. The objectives of HRC is to strengthen the respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and to promote peace processes in Georgia. In order to achieve the above objectives it is of utmost importance that the awareness of the public is raised and human rights are observed, further the government respects the rule of law and principles of transparency and distribution of power and ensures the elimination of discrimination at all levels. Georgia Health Cluster Bulletin No. 3 3 November 2008 HIGHLIGHTS • No communicable disease outbreaks reported • Measles and Rubella (MR) immunization campaign is ongoing. • First Health Cluster coordination meetings were held in the field: in Imereti and Samegrelo Regions. • Relocation efforts of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are continuing • The Joint Needs Assessment (JNA) was presented at a donor conference in Brussels on October 22 nd GENERAL SITUATION UPDATE • The Government finalized the list of buildings in Tbilisi to be used as Collective Centres for those IDPs who will not return to their homes in the near future. Tbilisi has 137 such Centers, housing a total of 12,417 IDPs (See the table below for details of IDP figures throughout Georgia). Region Total IDPs (As of October 31, 2008) Tbilisi 12,417 Adjara 69 Guria 5,600 Imereti 1,895 Kvemo Kartli 2,021 Mtskheta-Mtianeti 1,046 Racha-Lechkhumi 187 • In the report of his second mission to Georgia published on 21 October, Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that there had been progress in ensuring care and support to those displaced by the recent conflict, including some 20,000 people who are not likely to be able to return home soon. However, he added that the strides taken towards improving the plight of the IDPs could not substitute their right to return. The Commissioner reported that the principle of the right to return had been endorsed by all parties, and noted that the de facto South Ossetian authorities had indicated that they would support and respect this principle, including for ethnic Georgians who fled during the hostilities. -

Imereti – in Between Georgian Centralism and Local Identity in Language
Journal of Ethnophilosophical Questions and Global Ethics – Vol. 1 (2), 2017 __________________________________________________________________________________ Imereti – In between Georgian centralism and local identity in language Timo Schmitz Imereti (or Imeretia) is a province in Georgia in the South Caucasus. It lies in the center of the country and has an important knot with its center – Kutaissi. Imeretians traditionally speak their own dialect of Georgian, however, in a certain aspect, Imeretian serves the cause of a language. As such, it is an important part of the Imeretian heritage and identity. Imereti had its own kingdom which existed form the 13th till the 19th century and was sometimes part of Georgia, Russia and the Ottomans, and therefore had a lot of different influences shaping their identity. Even further, the region had a supralocal importance, as the princedoms of Abkhazia, Mingrelia and Guria were part of Imereti from time to time and therefore, the region had an important impact on whole Georgia and its history. The importance of the different kingdoms is necessary in understanding the different identities within Georgia. The Meskheti Kingdom covered the western part of Georgia and is known today for the Meskhetian Turks. It is the gate between Christianity and Islam. The Kartli kingdom is name giving for the Georgian language – Kartuli. The author of this paper informally questioned people from Georgia about their views on the Imeretian language and its perspective and therefore all the accounts given here are first-hand accounts. Imeretian is quite understandable for people all over Georgia and has a rather dialectal character. As such, Georgians see Imereti dialect downgraded and for many it does not sound educated. -

(Georgia: Kakheti); G. (Sibiota) kakhetiana nov.sp. (Georgia: Kakheti); G. (S.) frischi nov.sp. (Kyrgyzstan: Issyk-Kul); G. (S.) prominens nov.sp. (Kyrgyzstan: Issyk- Kul); G. (S.) dentata nov.sp. (Kyrgyzstan: Issyk-Kul). Based on a study of recently collected material, Geostiba zerchei PACE, 1996 is moved from the subgenus Sibiota CASEY, 1906 to Sipalotricha SCHEERPELTZ, 1931; the male sexual characters of this previously doubtful taxon are described and illustrated for the first time. Additional records of eight species are reported from the Caucasus region. Introduction The Caucasian fauna of the speciose genus Geostiba THOMSON, 1858 has been addressed in several previous contributions (ASSING 2005, 2016a, b, 2017a, c, 2018). As many as 46 species had been recorded from the region including Northeast Turkey (from Ordu to the border with Georgia), Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the Russian part of the Greater Caucasus. -

Abkhazia – Historical Timeline
ABKHAZIA – HISTORICAL TIMELINE All sources used are specifically NOT Georgian so there is no bias (even though there is an abundance of Georgian sources from V century onwards) Period 2000BC – 100BC Today’s territory of Abkhazia is part of Western Georgian kingdom of Colchis, with capital Aee (Kutaisi - Kuta-Aee (Stone-Aee)). Territory populated by Georgian Chans (Laz-Mengrelians) and Svans. According to all historians of the time like Strabo (map on the left by F. Lasserre, French Strabo expert), Herodotus, and Pseudo-Skilak - Colchis of this period is populated solely by the Colkhs (Georgians). The same Georgian culture existed throughout Colchis. This is seen through archaeological findings in Abkhazia that are exactly the same as in the rest of western Georgia, with its capital in central Georgian city of Kutaisi. The fact that the centre of Colchian culture was Kutaisi is also seen in the Legend of Jason and the Argonauts (Golden Fleece). They travel through town and river of Phasis (modern day Poti / Rioni, in Mengrelia), to the city of Aee (Kutaisi – in Imereti), where the king of Colchis reigns, to obtain the Golden Fleece (method of obtaining gold by Georgian Svans where fleece is placed in a stream and gold gets caught in it). Strabo in his works Geography XI, II, 19 clearly shows that Georgian Svan tribes ruled the area of modern day Abkhazia – “… in Dioscurias (Sukhumi)…are the Soanes, who are superior in power, - indeed, one might almost say that they are foremost in courage and power. At any rate, they are masters of the peoples around them, and hold possession of the heights of the Caucasus above Dioscurias (Sukhumi).
