Situation Update #34 - Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) WHO Country Office for Nepal Reporting Date: 2 – 8 December 2020 HIGHLIGHTS SITUATION OVERVIEW ● Of the total cases, 12,686 (5.2%) are active cases of which 43% continues to be from the NEPAL Kathmandu metropolitan area with additional cases throughout wards and palikas of (Data as of 8 December 2020, 07:00:00 hours) Kathmandu Valley districts. 2,41,994 confirmed cases ● There are about 3 districts with more than 500 1,614 deaths active cases reported consistently this week, 17,99,686 RT-PCR tests including Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Kaski. There are 2 districts with no active cases - Dolpa and SOUTH-EAST ASIA REGION Manang. ● Presently 8,047 (63.4%) active cases are in (Data as of 10am CEST 6 December 2020) home/ institutional isolation. 1,10,71,129 confirmed cases ● Among critical case patients nationally, 354 1,68,458 deaths patients are in intensive care (ICU) with 58 on ventilator support. On average, about 15 deaths GLOBAL per day were recorded this week. (Data as of 10am CEST 6 December 2020) NEPAL EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION 6,58,72,391 confirmed cases 15,23,656 deaths • As of 8 December 2020, T07:00:00 hours (Week no. 50), a total 2,41,994 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the country through polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR); 17,99,686 RT-PCR tests have been performed nationwide by 79 designated COVID-19 labs functional across the nation (as of 8 Dec 2020). • All 7 provinces in the country are now experiencing transmission via clusters of cases. -

Nepal COVID-19: Cluster Update #33 9 March 2021 COVID-19 situation Positive Recovered Tested for Persons in Persons in Deaths cases cases COVID-19 isolation quarantine 3,012 274,869 270,987 2,199,950 870 56 Source: https://covid19.mohp.gov.np/#/ (as of 9 March 2021) Overview Nepal’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign commenced on 27 January, and the first phase, conducted in two rounds, has now been concluded. The second round of the campaign began on 7 March, targeting people over 55 and with co-morbidities. As of 9 March, a total of 1,116,554 people have received at least one does of a COVID-19 vaccine. Some vaccine hesitancy has been observed among the population, citing concerns over its safety, efficacy and side effects. Half of the 4,257 questions received through various hotlines over the past two weeks have been related to COVID-19 vaccines, vaccine eligibility, vaccine trails, vaccine safety and efficacy, COVID-19 general information and dos and don’ts for recently vaccinated people. Over the past two weeks, seven vulnerable Nepali migrants (all male) stranded abroad were provided with support to return to Nepal in coordination with the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, and Nepal Embassy in Malaysia and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Ministry of Health and Population organised two rounds of national review of nutrition rehabilitation homes (NRH) between 25-27 January and 10-12 February 2021. The workshop identified key issues and made several recommendations on programme improvement, primarily centring on improving integration of NRHs services and information at local and district levels, as well as with hospitals to enhance coordination and treatment. -

Situation Report 2: Nepal Flood – Saptari District (18 July 2019) Assessment conducted jointly by DCA and Koshi Victim Society (KVS). Data gathered from 11 July 2019 with assessment completed on 16, 17 and 18 July 2019. This report is produced by DCA Nepal, based on field assessment of affected municipalities, and additional meetings held with humanitarian agencies, local NGOs, and government officials. Summary » Floods caused by heavy rainfall in Nepal have been resulting in 90 dead, 29 missing, and 41 injured (Ministry of Home Affairs, 18 July). Properties, rice crops and livelihoods have also been lost. » Flood water has inundated thousands of houses along the high raised road and embankment areas, leaving at least 11,839 households temporarily displaced (UN Sit Rep – July 18, 2019). » The District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) report shows that 13 of 18 municipalities in Saptari district are affected by floods and water logging, of which five are rural municipalities. » According to the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), Saptari district is assessed to be one of the most hard- hit areas. No fatalities have been recorded yet. » DCA as a District Lead Support Agency (DLSA) of Saptari district, is supporting in enhancing coordination among aid agencies and government bodies as well as facilitating information sharing about flood adversities. 1 | P a g e Situation Overview On 17 July, the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC), Saptari reported that 4,500 houses were affected by floodwater. Of these, 1,500 houses are severely damaged. DDMC has recommended that relief agencies go directly to the affected municipalities and coordinate with Local Government for relief distribution. -

Universal Periodic Review Violations of the Right to Food in Nepal Submission by FIAN International (July 2010) • Explanation of Organization The following information is submitted by FIAN International in Cooperation with FIAN Nepal in July 2010. FIAN, the Food-first Information and Action Network is an international human rights organization for the right to adequate food with consultative status at the United Nations. FIAN has 18th sections and coordinations in different countries and works in further countries together with partner organizations. FIAN International also has thousands individual members across the globe. FIAN Nepal is one of the national sections of FIAN International. • Summary The aim of the following report is to draw attention to the wide range of stakeholders on Right to Food violations, related to food access in Nepal. Many of these problems have existed for quite some time; some surfaced as early as 1970s. Yet, they have not been met with any solutions thus far. However, the International Human Rights treaties and other international law sources recognizing the Right to Food the state of Nepal has committed to, as well as its Interim Constitution, which was adopted in 2007, obligate the government to adopt measures to realize the right to adequate food in these cases. On May 14 th 1991 the South-Asian state of Nepal ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). In addition, Nepal has also ratified all other treaties, relevant to the Right to Food, such as the International Covenant in Civil and Political Rights, the Convention for the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women or the Convention on the Rights of the Child and adopted the FAO Voluntary Guidelines to support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security. -
The Kamaiya System of Bonded Labour in Nepal
Nepal Case Study on Bonded Labour Final1 1 THE KAMAIYA SYSTEM OF BONDED LABOUR IN NEPAL INTRODUCTION The origin of the kamaiya system of bonded labour can be traced back to a kind of forced labour system that existed during the rule of the Lichhabi dynasty between 100 and 880 AD (Karki 2001:65). The system was re-enforced later during the reign of King Jayasthiti Malla of Kathmandu (1380–1395 AD), the person who legitimated the caste system in Nepali society (BLLF 1989:17; Bista 1991:38-39), when labourers used to be forcibly engaged in work relating to trade with Tibet and other neighbouring countries. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Gorkhali and Rana rulers introduced and institutionalised new forms of forced labour systems such as Jhara,1 Hulak2, Beth3 and Begar4 (Regmi, 1972 reprint 1999:102, cited in Karki, 2001). The later two forms, which centred on agricultural works, soon evolved into such labour relationships where the workers became tied to the landlords being mortgaged in the same manner as land and other property. These workers overtimes became permanently bonded to the masters. The kamaiya system was first noticed by anthropologists in the 1960s (Robertson and Mishra, 1997), but it came to wider public attention only after the change of polity in 1990 due in major part to the work of a few non-government organisations. The 1990s can be credited as the decade of the freedom movement of kamaiyas. Full-scale involvement of NGOs, national as well as local, with some level of support by some political parties, in launching education classes for kamaiyas and organising them into their groups culminated in a kind of national movement in 2000.
