Durban North College Newsletter DURBAN NORTH COLLEGE NEWSLETTER The Perfect Balance Aug/Sept 2019 * ”We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act but a habit” – Aristotle Message from the Principal… Over the past two weeks our learners participated in a variety of activities. The children were not only active on the sporting fields but were also culturally involved. Thank you to all the parents who supported their child/ren during these busy times. The grade 12 Language learners were involved in the external oral, moderation. Trial exam commenced on Monday 26 August. We wish our matrics well as they prepare for their exam. Good results are achieved through application and thorough prepa- ration. The final NCS exam for grade 12 learners will start on Tuesday 16 October 2019 with CATN P1. Our school celebrated its 49th birthday on 17 August. Our annual First Team Dinner for HS learners took place on Friday evening 23 August. Our guest speaker was Precious Mthemba, the Protea netball player. This is always a highlight on the school calendar. Thank you to Mrs. Erxleben and her committee for making thus a successful event. The theme this year was an evening with Splashes of colour! It was an opportunity to thank our coaches, managers and learners. Congratulations to our new leaders (prefects) for 2020 that was announced on 26 August. They will be attending a leadership camp at Spirit of Adventure from 5 September until 7 September. Our SP learners are hard at practise for the ‘Sing in Harmonie’ competition that will take place on 13 October at Gold Reef City. Thank you to all parents who support their children so generously in the weekly contri- bution towards our Go Kart fundraising project. Thank you to all those parents who pay their school fees diligently . We once again request that parents co-operate when dropping off and collecting your child in Pembroke Road. If all of us co-operate, it will be less painful during the busy times. At the SGB by election for one parent on 28 August, Mr Pieter Pretorius was elected. Congratulations! Ms Talia Russon took part in the Port Natal Bowls Junior Mas- ters tournament on 31 August, after being crowned the winner of the PNB district Champion of Champions. We are very proud of Ms Russon! DYSLEXIA PARENT SUPPORT GROUP The Dyslexia parent support group, run by Dr Jenifer Roberts took place on Thursday, 22 August. She informed parents about living with dyslexia, as she herself is dyslexic. Dr Roberts gave tips and ideas on how we can change certain aspects and take a different approach in reaching our goals. Sometimes it can take longer to reach our goals but if we persist, the goal will be in our reach and with assessments and conces- sions, learners can study further. It is imperative that we help our children to find their strengths and weaknesses, then develop their strenghts. With today’s technology, we are fortunate that we can freely make use of spellchecker, Google Translate and Dictionaries. The parents asked questions and all went home with loads of ideas and answered questions. We would like to thank Dr. Roberts for the opportunity and the time she took out of her schedule to speak to our group. We appreciated it. Mrs R. Howard ♪♫SING IN HARMONIE ♪♫ We are currently raising funds for our SP choir going to Gauteng to take part in the Sing-in-Harmonie school choir competition. If you would like to assist or get involved please contact our choir leader Mrs. Anélda Roets for more infor- mation. The DNC Eisteddfod took place for the second consecutive year during the week of 19-23 Aug. It was a very successful week with entries from our own learners as well as learners from the schools in the surrounding Durban North area. On Tuesday night, the school choirs had a chance to show off their talents, and once again our SP choir did not stand back for the choirs of Danville, Chelsea, Northwood or Clarence. We are very proud of our learners who were rewarded with a gold certificate. We look forward to hosting the Eisteddfod again next year and making it an even big- ger event.. Thanks to everyone who supported and attended. PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS A correction for the July-August newsletter - Mickayle Morrison’s name was accidently left out in the Top 3 names for Grade 4. He shares the third place with Dintle Mokoena. Gr 7 - ENTREPRENEURS’ DAY On 8 August the grade 7 learners had their annual Entrepreneurs day (Market day). The day was full of snacks and games where the learners did business at various stalls. The aim of the day was to give the learners the experience of how it is to do business one day as an Entrepreneur and it is also a part of the EMS Curriculum. A prize at the end of the day went to the stall that did the most of marketing them- selves. Gr 7 - CAMP The grade 7 learners, accompanied by Ms Grobbelaar and Mr Schoombee went on a camp to Roselands Outdoor Adventure from 28-30 August. On the camp the learners participated in a wide variety of activities and were assisted by facilitators who guided them. The learners enjoyed their time away and will always remember the ex- perience of this trip. PS SPORT JP INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS JP Athletics Day took place on Friday, August 2. We were fontunate to have good weather and lots of support from the parents. The JP phase enjoyed the day immensely and both young and old had lots of fun. The red team ended the day with the most points on the board. Congratulations and thanks for everyone's support! MINI HOCKEY The two grade 3 teams had a busy hockey season, with games being played at Northwood Boys, Reddam House Umhlanga en Crawford North Coast. The last game of the season at Crawford North Coast unfortunately, was cancelled due to bad weather. The boys and girls hockey skills improved from the first match they played and we look forward seeing these budding new stars. Thanks to all the parents for supporting us at the away-games. HIGH SCHOOL NEWS HS REVUE This was definitely one of the highlights on the school calendar this year, as the learners showcased a musical journey through song and dance in the 2019 revue called REFLECTIONS. With the help and choreography from Donna da Costa from Dance Barra Dance Studio and an enjoyable script by Rebekah Andrews, the audience were treated to a wonderful evening.
