In my travels, to Victoria, I was thrilled to attend the Concours d'Elegance in September at Springthorpe Common in Macleod, just north of Melbourne city. Once again, we enjoyed a great turnout of 68 Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcars, of which 20 were presented for judging. And in the same spirit as the All British Day event, a marvellous picnic table took centre stage. I want to thank the Club Committee for their hospitality and brilliant organisation. Also on my winter calendar was my recent trip to Monterey, California, where I was invited to attend the 69th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as Shadow Judge. Not only was it my 20th appearance but this year's concours coincided with Bentley Motorcar's centenary, which added more excitement to the event. alancing large diameter wheels can be a Btime consuming business with mixed results, especially on the wheels and tyres fi tted to our pre-war models. My 1913 Silver Ghost (2583) London to Edinburgh Continental Tourer was originally fi tted with larger 935 x 135 mm beaded edge tyres on 25-inch rims compared to the standard Ghost’s 895 x 135 beaded edge on 24-inch rims. Unfortunately, you cant get this larger size beaded edge tyre any more so I opted for readily available 35 x 5 straight–sided tyres on 25-inch split rims giving me a similar overall diameter of 939mm. The 35 x 5 Universal tyres are produced as 8-ply to make them comply with truck tyre standards, attracting a lower import duty and are rather heavy. These large wheels and tyres have proved a real chore to balance and whilst I could get them to balance nicely say at 60km/h they showed signs of imbalance at 80km/h and vice above: David Berthon's 1913 Silver Ghost versa. After recently fi tting two new rear tyres on my car, Ben McKinnon at Antique Tyres in West Heidelberg, Victoria introduced me to a new procedure of fi lling the tube with a quantity of glass beads, which fi nd their way around the tyre under centrifugal force until they fi nd the sweet spot to balance out the tyre. Peter Willcox has had great success with this system too on his 1928 New Phantom (83AL) Barker Tourer fi tted with rather heavy 700 x 21 Dunlop tyres on well-base split rims. Simon Elliott also tells me it has made a marked diff erence to the driving of that car. In my case I have had remarkable success – the driving enjoyment has improved ten fold and the car is a joy now on the open road at 100km/h whereas before it felt uncomfortable through the steering at times which spoilt the driving pleasure in other areas. Ben McKinnon has made the necessary pump and connectors to induce the bag of beads into the tube through the valve stem – the exercise per wheel rather inexpensive - loaded in place at $25 per wheel. This was the fi rst time such an invitation had been issued and followed-up with a period of information and advertising to detail the 2 events. In 1953, when new, B217TO was the subject of road-tests in The Motor and Autocar, as well as being driven to Oxford for a photo-shoot using the famous and picturesque university city as a back-drop. The locations of some of the photographs are easy enough to recognise, such as Oriel Square, seen in modern times in this shot (below) taken by the writer on June 19th, 2019.

It has been in the United States for many years.

But which college? Once the writer stood in Oriel Square, photographing the present-day scene there, it was suddenly realised that to the right – visible in the lower photograph on the previous page – was the entrance in question, and that the car had only been moved a few yards in the original photo-shoot! The college is of course Oriel, founded in 1326 and associated over the centuries with countless notables including Sir Walter Raleigh, who was an undergraduate between 1572 and 1574, and Cecil Rhodes, to name only two.

Rolls-Royce Cars for sale. Now, market reality. Well, I thought I had them priced right, but obviously not. It’s been fun, great people and there is no pressing necessity to sell except that my wife cannot join me on drives, so my mind is made up to move on, clear the warehouse, sell the spares and tools and maybe do something else. There is a Phantom II with a rebuilt engine on the way as well. If you have a reasonable offer to buy these well maintained, pleasant (but not concours) vehicles then call me and let’s move on. Your chance to enjoy! 1923 Rolls-Royce 20HP (76A7) Supreme. Price: Best Offer
