Obsega krajši pregled zgodovine slovenskega izseljevanja in zgodovine Minnesote. Antona v Elyju. Na koncu so opisana društva v sklopu bratskih podpornih organizacij in društveno ţivljenje. Ključne besede: slovenski izseljenci, Ely, Minnesota, Zdruţene drţave Amerike, slovenski misijonarji, Joţef Frančišek Buh, Jugoslovanska katoliška jednota ABSTRACT The master’s thesis presents the lives of Slovene immigrants in Ely, a small city in the north eastern Minnesota from 1891 till 1939. The development of the city of Ely was marked by mining, which was the main source of income of its inhabitants in the observed period. It had a significant impact on the lives, activities and organisation of the Slovene Americans in the city. They were mostly mine workers, some of them owned various small companies. The master’s thesis is based on the Slovene-American ethnic press (Amerikanski Slovenec, Nova doba, Prosveta), archival sources and literature. The master’s thesis is divided into six chapters. The first presents an overview of the history of Slovene immigration and the overview of the history of Minnesota. The main chapter of the master’s thesis describes the general overview of the history of Ely, followed by the description of mining, working conditions, tourism and other economic activities. The next chapter presents the political life of Slovenes in Ely, followed by the religious life. This part contains a short overview of the work of Slovene missionaries in Minnesota and the life and work of the missionary Joţef Frančišek Buh. Also shown is the overview of the history of the St. Anthony’s Parish in Ely. The final chapter presents the description of Slovene fraternal organisations and the overview of the social life of Slovenes in Ely. I 3 0307 00055 5675 -This booklet is dedicated to all the employees ofthe Department ofHuman Services, past and present, whose many years ofservice to the Department have helped improve the lives ofMinnesotans. April 15, 1998 1 Preface The work of the Department of Human Services has a long history in Minnesota, dating back almost to the inception of statehood. From the opening of the State Institute at Faribault in 1863 and St. Peter State Hospital in 1866, to the development and implementation of such programs as MinnesotaCare and the Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP), the Department has helped millions of Minnesotans and their families in need. The origins of the Departments programs almost exclusively began with the history of institutions in this State. Over the years, programs have evolved, taking form under the auspices of each successor; the State Board of Correction and Charities in 1883, the State Board of Control in 1901, the Department of Social Security in 1939, the Depart ment of Public Welfare in 1953, and finally under the name of the Department of Human Services, in 1983. Regardless of the title, the charge has remained steadfast, to serve the citizens of this State. This booklet provides a glimpse of our Department and its activities over those many years.

We were so near to him, knew him so well, were so profoundly influenced by his lovable personality and his simple greatness, that we may well be accused of bias. His passing is still so recent that a biog- raphy of him prepared at this time could hardly be expected to be critical and exact. Nevertheless, the demand for an authoritative account of the Hfe of a man who so profoundly influenced public thought, who so strongly appealed to the popular and patri- otic conception of what a public man should be, made it imperative that some account of his work be published while recollection of his personality is still fresh.
