THE INAUGURATION OF CLAYTON S. ROSE Fifteenth President of Bowdoin College Saturday, October 17, 2015 10:30 a.m. Farley Field House Bowdoin College Brunswick, Maine Bricks The pattern of brick used in these materials is derived from the brick of the terrace of the Walker Art Building, which houses the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. The Walker Art Building is an anchor of Bowdoin’s historic Quad, and it is a true architectural beauty. It is also a place full of life—on warm days, the terrace is the first place you will see students and others enjoying the sunshine—and it is standing on this brick that students both begin and end their time at Bowdoin. At the end of their orientation to the College, the incoming class gathers on the terrace for their first photo as a class, and at Commencement they walk across the terrace to shake the hand of Bowdoin’s president and receive their diplomas. Orchestra for the Next Century, Gary M. Schneider, Music Director, follows up its acclaimed NY debut in February at the Ecstatic Music Festival with a tribute to the great Swiss conductor and musical philanthropist Paul Sacher in a concert on April 30, 2013 at 8:00 pm at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. The concert features two works Sacher commissioned from Stravinsky and Martinů paired with recent works by distinguished American composers Margaret Brouwer and Paul Moravec. Igor Stranvinsky’s Concerto in D for String Orchestra and Bohuslav Martinů’s Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano and Timpani are among the many important works Sacher commissioned for his Basel Chamber Orchestra. Through his commissioning of new works from many of the most important composers of the 20th century, Sacher is responsible for the existence of an amazing number of landmark compositions, many of which entered the repertory and are performed every year in concert halls around the world. The concert will also include the New York premier of Margaret Brouwer’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, featuring the acclaimed Japanese-American violinist Michi Wiancko, for whom it was written. -

present Discover The Birthday Boys Live on the Radio with Maestro George Marriner Maull Friday, May 7, 2021 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM The Birthdayy Boys Tchaikovskyik and Brahms, born onon May 7th, seven years and 2,000 miles apart, developed very different approaches to writing music. These differences will be explored by Maestro Maull and The Discovery Orchestra Quartet in this special live radio broadcast of Inside Music produced in conjunction with WWFM, The Classical Network. The producer of Inside Music is David Osenberg. The Discovery Orchestra Quartet Discovery Orchestra members violinist Rebekah Johnson, cellist Scott Ballantyne, pianist Hiroko Sasaki and violist Arturo Delmoni along with Maestro Maull will explore the fourth movement, Rondo alla Zingarese: presto from the Brahms G Minor Piano Quartet No. 1, Opus 25. Rebekah Johnson Discovery Orchestra assistant concertmaster Rebekah Johnson began violin studies in Iowa at age three and at six gave her first public performance on a CBS television special. Later that year she was awarded first prize in the Minneapolis Young Artist Competition for her performance of Mozart's Fourth Violin Concerto. After graduating high school she moved to New York City to study with Ivan Galamian and Sally Thomas receiving Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School. Her chamber music coaches included Joseph Gingold, Leonard Rose, Felix Galimir and the Juilliard Quartet. -

Glaser, Advisor Dr. Arved Ashby Dr. Edward Bak Copyrighted by Jingbei Li, D.M.A 2019 ABSTRACT The piano was first introduced to China in the early part of the twentieth century. Perhaps as a result of this short history, European-derived styles and techniques influenced Chinese composers in developing their own compositional styles for the piano by combining European compositional forms and techniques with Chinese materials and approaches. In this document, my focus is on Chinese piano preludes and their development. Having performed the complete Debussy Preludes Book II on my final doctoral recital, I became interested in comprehensively exploring the genre for it has been utilized by many Chinese composers. This document will take a close look in the way that three modern Chinese composers have adapted their own compositional styles to the genre. Composers Ding Shan-de, Chen Ming-zhi, and Zhang Shuai, while prominent in their homeland, are relatively unknown outside China. The Three Piano Preludes by Ding Shan-de, The Piano Preludes and Fugues by Chen Ming-zhi and The Three Preludes for Piano by Zhang Shuai are three popular works which exhibit Chinese musical idioms and demonstrate the variety of approaches to the genre of the piano prelude bridging the twentieth century. -

Volume I These days, labels such as classical, rock and pop mean less and less since young musicians frequently blur boundaries between genres. These young musicians have built an alternative musical universe. I construct five different categories to explore this universe. They are 1) circuits of alternate concert venues, 2) cross-genre collaborations, 3) alternative modes of musical groups, 4) new compositional trends in classical chamber music, and 5) new ensembles and record labels. ii In this dissertation, I aim to explore these five categories, connecting them to recent cultural trends in New York. -

His first musical passion was playing the electric guitar, in rock bands based in northern California. He later discovered concert music and has composed for orchestras, chamber ensembles, dance, and opera. He regularly performs his own works, including two electric guitar concertos and numerous solo and chamber works, and is also active as an improvising musician and performs with his band Big Farm. -

Composer’s Note —Bryce Dessner The music in Frame of Mind is an original composition by Bryce Dessner and in 2018, will be accompanied live by the Australian String Quartet. In 2009, David Harrington asked me to write a piece for Kronos Quartet for a Australian String Quartet performance in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. I live just two blocks from the park and spend For over 30 years, the Australian String Quartet has created unforgettable many mornings running around it. The park for me symbolizes much of what I love performances for national and international audiences. Dedicated to musical about New York, especially the diversity of Brooklyn with its myriad cultures and excellence with a distinctly Australian character, their purpose is to create chemistry communities. My father’s family, Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia, also lived and amplify intimacy through experiences that connect people with string quartet near the park for many years in the 1940s and 1950s before moving to Queens. music.
