Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers. -

MARCH 28, 2020 WELCOME TO THE 74TH ANNUAL March 28, 2020 | Online A SPECIAL NOTE This year, in an effort to hinder the spread of the novel coronavirus, we’re taking the Maine State Science Fair online. Judges will interview students through conferencing on the morning of Saturday, March 28. Transitioning MSSF to a virtual fair has been possible only with the perseverance of hundreds of people: students, teachers, judges, and the dedicated staff of Maine Mathematics & Science Alliance and The Jackson Laboratory. We thank everyone who’s come together to make it possible. We would also like to acknowledge the support UMaine gave to the fair in planning an in-person event, and we hope to work with them again soon to host the event on their campus. The Maine State Science Fair is affiliated with the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Society for Science & the Public has canceled the event this year due to concerns about COVID-19. Awards for the 2020 Maine State Science Fair include: 3 Grand Prize Awards • In lieu of a trip to present at Regeneron ISEF, the top three projects at MSSF will be awarded with $500 prizes. College of the Atlantic Bar Harbor, Maine Spring 2008, Climate Action Plan BACKGROUND Campus Profile College of the Atlantic (COA) is a small, four-year, private college with one major: human ecology. Its 300 students design their own course of study geared to investigate, and ultimately improve, the relationships between human beings and their social and natural communities. Students at COA are both reflective and active. While many students study sciences and policy, our students come to campus with the creativity of the thinking mind; we graduate musicians, poets, artists and screenwriters along with green business workers, conservationists and marine scientists. Environmentalism is inherent in everything COA does. Its mission and major draw students who are inherently aware of the impact of their actions. Recycling is standard procedure; food is composted; landscaping is organic; bikes are everywhere; the environment is protected and cared for. COA students, faculty and staff are involved in decisions about all aspects of the college, from which trees should be cut and where roads and walkways placed to the nature of any new structures. Much of the college’s produce comes from its own organic farm or a kitchen garden that is part of the campus’ public community gardens. Only low- or no-VOC paints and healthy cleaning products are used. Sustainability is part of purchasing decision’s for furniture, office products and food. From the President I just finished reading an extraordinary book. In The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science, Richard Holmes tells a series of rivet- ing stories profiling the eighteenth century pioneers of chemistry, biology, and astronomy. Hol- mes portrays the close interconnection between science and art as intrinsic to the creative process. At the source of scientific discovery is the remarkable quality of wonder—the deep and resilient desire to better understand the origins of life and the cosmos, not just to quench an unrelenting curiosity, but also to learn how to reside well on our remarkable planet. Perhaps this is the holy grail of science education—the inevitable intersection of creativity and analysis. Wonder requires both a poetic sensibil- ity and a rigorous empiricism. This is the heart of At the source of scientific discovery is the remarkable environmental learning as well. Pine Grove Cemetery Walking Tour A tour of the final resting place of many prominent members of the Brunswick community Brief History: With the utilization of all plots in the Brunswick burying ground adjacent to the meeting house on upper Maine Street, three citizens contracted with Bowdoin College to acquire land for a new site. In 1821, a tract was obtained and subsequently – in 1886 and 1973 – two ad- joining parcels were purchased and developed. As a condition of each sale, Bowdoin College was deeded a row of plots to allocate as they wished. Traditionally, they were assigned to individuals and families who had given distinguished service to the college. The remaining plots were made available to local citizens and a walk of the grounds will find numerous prominent Brunswick names, some of which are found within these pages. The accompanying map on the back of this booklet provides a guide to specific grave sites. For more information about those buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, see the survey prepared by Cheetham & Cheetham, available at Brunswick’s Curtis Memorial Library, Bowdoin College Library, and the Pejepscot Historical Society. WALKER ON BEHALF OF MAINE INDEPENDENT COLLEGES ASSOCIATION BEFORE THE COMMITTEE ON TAXATION In opposition to LD 659, An Act To Ease The Property Tax Burden By Authorizing Municipalities To Require Payments In Lieu Of Taxes From Certain Exempt Organizations Joint Standing Committee on Taxation April 14, 2021 Senator Chipman, Representative Terry, and members of the Taxation Committee, my name is Daniel Walker, and I am an attorney with Preti Flaherty and I am here today on behalf of the Maine Independent Colleges Association (MICA) to testify in opposition to LD 659. MICA represents 11 private, nonprofit colleges and universities1 throughout Maine that serve over 25,000 students, over 7,000 of whom are from Maine. These institutions are located in municipalities of all sizes across the State, from Maine’s largest city to small tourist towns and farming communities. Collectively, the 11 institutions are an economic force and an integral part of Maine’s Higher Educational eco-system. While they share the attributes of being private and nonprofit, these institutions are highly diverse and serve very different aspects of the educational needs of Maine people. Together they: Employ over 6,000 Maine workers. Have a total payroll in excess of $340 million. Have direct expenditures of over $615 million. Have an estimated economic impact on Maine’s economy of over a billion dollars each year. Directly contribute close to $2M to municipalities. Value of community service is over $24 million. Provide nearly $55 million in financial aid to Maine students. -
