Abstract In this thesis, I argue that discourses of victimhood, victory, and xenophobia underpin both Sinhalese and Tamil nationalist and religious fundamentalist movements. Ethnic discourse has allowed citizens to affirm collective ideals in the face of disparate experiences, reclaim power and autonomy in contexts of fundamental instability, but has also deepened ethnic divides in the post-war era. In the first chapter, I argue that mutually exclusive narratives of victimhood lie at the root of ethnic solitudes, and provide barriers to mechanisms of transitional justice and memorialization. The second chapter includes an analysis of the politicization of mythic figures and events from the Rāmāyaṇa and Mahāvaṃsa in nationalist discourses of victory, supremacy, and legacy. Finally, in the third chapter, I explore the Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) rhetoric and symbolism, and contend that a xenophobic discourse of terrorism has been imposed and transferred from Tamil to Muslim minorities. Ultimately, these discourses prevent Sri Lankans from embracing a multi-ethnic and multi- religious nationality, and hinder efforts at transitional justice. -

Now they must head back, stopping to visit a CVM project which hosts over 800 children, a CIAI project which teaches circus art to boys on the street and a marathon of over 40.000 people, which they decide to participate in. However, the historic significance of this built form has evolved through time, as has its rudimentary structure. The massive dome-shaped “anda” form which has now become synonymous with the idea of this Buddhist shrine, is the result of years of cultural, social and geographical influences. The beauty of this typology of architecture lies in its intricate details, interesting motifs and immense symbolism, reflected and adapted in various local contexts across the world. Today, the word “stupa” is used interchangeably while referring to monuments such as pagodas, wat, etc. This paper is, therefore, an attempt to understand the ideology and the concept of a stupa, with a focus on tracing its history and transition over time. The main objective of the research is not just to understand the essence of the architectural and theological aspects of the traditional stupa but also to understand how geographical factors, advances in material, and local socio-cultural norms have given way to a much broader definition of this word, encompassing all forms, from a simplistic mound to grand, elaborate sanctums of great value to architecture and society -

Its construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC, although decorations of the Parthenon continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an Parthenon 2 enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a program of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure.[3] The Parthenon itself replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury. -

Harn Museum Collection, 1996.23, Museum purchase, gift of Dr. and Mrs. David A. Cofrin Ceramics have been an integral part of Chinese culture throughout its history. How they were fashioned, decorated and used reflected functional needs, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs. High quality ceramic vessels were created as early as the Neolithic period. By the time of the Han dynasty (206 B.C.E. - 220 C.E.), ceramics took many forms, from various types of vessels to figurative work. Surface decoration could take the form of relief, incision, painting, or glazing. Vessels were wheel- thrown, indicating high technical achievement. Many ceramic forms, it seems evident, were modeled on costlier metal prototypes. While ceramics undoubtedly served utilitarian functions, they were also used as funerary objects. During the Han dynasty, the Chinese often buried their dead with objects they would need in the afterlife. This ceramic jar was made for that purpose. Its painted design is intended to resemble lacquer, an extremely valuable material that was considered a sign of high status. Because it was prohibitively expensive for most families to bury the dead with actual lacquer vessels, ceramic replicas were used instead as a way of conserving financial resources for the living. The form and decoration of this jar are perfectly balanced. The painted decoration is intricate and expertly applied. The major theme, seen in the central band, is that of a dragon and a phoenix. -

Before commencing your climb, find the Vejja Sala; ruins of a hospital dating back to the 3rd century AD. Further, Kantaka Cetiya is situated on a portion of the rock not much higher from the base, it is one of the 1st religious monuments to be built in Sri Lanka resting at a height of 425 feet. -

Johnson Excerpt More information Introduction Of all the building projects undertaken by Roman emperors during the course of their individual reigns, none elicited more personal interest than their own funerary monuments. In the later Roman Empire, as it had been earlier, these were buildings destined to provide a secure resting place for their mortal remains and a site of cult practices. The monuments were meant to project an image of majesty and importance for all others to see, for these were, in fact, sepulcra divorum, tombs of the divi, or demigods, an honor reserved for emperors. The mausolea of the emperors and members of their families thus constitute one of the most conspicuous groups of buildings in late Roman and Early Christian architecture, some of which are well-preserved, whereas others are now in ruins or known solely from literary sources. These monuments are among the period’s most important examples of funerary architecture, a form that was as innovative and varied as it was ubiquitous in the empire. Previous to the present study, these buildings have never been examined as a group, with two exceptions – a brief article that consisted of little more than an annotated list of monuments, and a slim volume that provides an overview of Roman imperial funerals and monuments.1 Some of the individual mausolea have been the subjects of comprehensive monographs, especially in recent years, though others have been treated only in short articles or as parts of larger works. -

It is considered to be the finest example of Indian brickwork and was highly influential in the development of later architectural traditions. Bodhgaya is a pilgrimage site since Siddhartha achieved enlightenment here and became Gautama Buddha. While the bodhi tree is of immense importance, the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya is an important reminder of the brickwork of that time. The Mahabodhi Temple is surrounded by stone ralling on all four sides. The design of the temple is unusual. It is, strictly speaking, neither Dravida nor Nagara. It is narrow like a Nagara temple, but it rises without curving, like a Dravida one. The monastic university of Nalanda is a mahavihara as it is a complex of several monasteries of various sizes. Till date, only a small portion of this ancient learning centre has been excavated as most of it lies buried under contemporary civilisation, making further excavations almost impossible. Most of the information about Nalanda is based on the records of Xuan Zang which states that the foundation of a monastery was laid by Kumargupta I in the fifth century CE. REMARKS UPON THE COLOSSALCHRYSELEPHAN- TINE STATUE OF ATHENA IN THE PARTHENON INTRODUCTION IT is not to be expectedthat even fragmentsof the gold and ivory colossal statue of Athena in the Parthenon should have survived the ravages of time. However, a good deal is known about the statue from small copies in the round and from coins, plaques, gems and the like; also, the famous statue is mentioned by ancient writers, sometimes at considerable length. Consequently we have a fairly good idea of her appearance. And when we come to consider the pedestal on which the statue stood, we find that there are data which can be studied to advantage. Obviously the importance of the statue called for a carefully designed pedestal. Thus it is desirable that all existing data concerning the pedestal be recorded. Let us, then, make a few remarks not only about the colossal statue, but also about the pedestal on which the statue stood. I ATHENA PARTHENOS, THE CLIMAX OF THE PANATHENEA Figure 1 shows the position of the colossal statue (often referred to as the Parthenos) in the east cella of the temple. The blocks which give the position of the statue are toward the west end of the nave and on the axis of the temple. They are poros blocks of the type used for foundations. They are flush with the marble pave- ment of the nave, and they are in situ. Anuradhapura Is a Major City in Sri Lanka
Anuradhapura is a major city in Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of North Central Province, Sri Lanka and the capital of Anuradhapura District. Anuradhapura Jethawanaramaya Dagoba The Jetavanaramaya is a stupa located in the ruins of Jetavana in the sacred world heritage city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Mahasena of Anuradhapura (273–301) initiated the construction of the stupa following the destruction of the mahavihara. His son Maghavanna I completed the construction of the stupa.[1] A part of a sash or belt tied by the Buddha is believed to be the relic that is enshrined here. Mirisawetiya Vihara The Mirisaveti Stupa is situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. King Dutugamunu built the Mirisaveti Stupa after defeating King Elara. Kuttam Pokuna One of the best specimen of bathing tanks or pools in ancient Sri Lanka is the pair of pools known as Kuttam Pokuna. The said pair of pools were built by the Sinhalese in the ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura. Isurumuniya Isurumuniya is a Buddhist temple situated near to the Tisawewa. There are four carvings of special interest in this Viharaya. They are the Isurumuniya Lovers, Elephant Pond and the Royal Family. Thuparamaya Thuparamaya is a dagoba in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist sacred place of veneration. Mahinda Thera, an envoy sent by King Ashoka himself introduced Theravada Buddhism and also chetiya worship to Sri Lanka. Abhayagiri dagoba Abhayagiri Vihāra was a major monastery site of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism that was situated in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is one of the most extensive ruins in the world and one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage cities in the nation.
