Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18

President’s Report The 2017-18 season saw a ‘changing of the guard’ with Geoff Hasler standing down as president after 7 years at the helm and Steve Wilson as Honorary Secretary after 6 years. On behalf of Rob and myself I’d like to thank Geoff and Steve for their significant contributions to the Hornsby umpiring fraternity. In August we received the sad news that our patron and friend Alex Terry passed away. Many members of this association attended Alex’s funeral, a sign of his standing in the cricket community. With the introduction of the MCC Laws 2017, the largest rewrite of the code since 2000, Barry MacDonald and Geoff Hasler undertook a major review of these changes and made recommendations for amendments to the Senior Competition rules. They also conducted training sessions of the 2017 Law changes on top of their normal captain’s course training. I commend them on their dedication to the task of educating players and coaches in these changes. This season saw the 2nd most number of appointments in our history with 310. This was a slight drop from last season, in part due to there being no senior representative teams and no under 16 IDCA. For the regular senior competition, we lost Steve Wilson (retirement), Raja Mohan (injury) and Rob Hanich (playing), but gained Paul Pastras, Steve Redman and Scott Reid (part time). This enabled us to cover all turf games and have 2 umpires in most A grade games. The Umpire Association received one request to cover a lower grade game and three requests to cover under 16 games which we were able to cover 3 of these games at short notice. Fortunately, or should that be unfortunately, there was one disciplinary matter reported. One of the recommendations from the D&D matter is to encourage the umpire group to use a breach notice before behaviour escalates to a disciplinary matter, where applicable. In general, the yellow card system in soccer helps the referee control the game and improve player behaviour. The breach notice system used correctly should do the same. HKHDCUA was pleased to receive some generous sponsorship from Asquith Bowling Club. In return we held four functions at the club (refer social report), four executive meetings, our AGM as well as the club being the local watering hole for post-match analysis. I’d also like to thank Tim Davidson and his company Fortunity for sponsoring the cost of new name badges as well as the accounting software used for our accounts. There are many people to thank for their work and support this season. I’d especially like to thank Rob Hanich (Secretary) who performs the bulk of the day to day running of the umpires and took the position of this body on the Association’s executive. I’d also like to thank the other members of our Executive Committee: Tim Davidson (Treasurer), Simon Moore (Assistant Secretary) for doing the appointments for our representative fixtures, Steve Hill (Social Secretary) for organising all our social events and Annual Presentation Night, and Barry McDonald (Training Officer) for running the 2017 Code change nights and captain courses. Special thanks to Geoff Hasler who not only helped with the training, but also for organising the over rate cards and bowling markers. What’s in store for us next season?

 The executive has approved a new heat policy.  Cricket Australia have published new youth pace bowling guidelines.  Cricket Australia junior pathways – potential impacts with representative and junior games.  The association will have an under 13 girls Mollie Dive representative team for the first time.  The NSWDCA under 10 Foster shield potentially replaced with 2 divisions in the under 10 IDCA.  Outcomes from the 5 year strategic plan on our senior and junior competitions.  Work with the association to ensure there is an improved D&D procedure

I hope to see you next season.

Scott Reid

Vale – Alexander Thomas George Terry

On the 19th August, Alex lost his brave battle with cancer.

Alex retired from active umpiring in 2010, due to his deteriorating health, having umpired some 172 matches since we recorded our history in 2000. Alex was vice president of the Umpires association for four seasons and has been a Patron since 2013/14. He holds the record for most appointments in a season, 34 in the 2007/08 season. Alex was a long-term member of the Hornsby cricket community. At the association level, he started as a Representative team manager in 1995/96, delegate to the NSWJCU/NSWDCA & IDCA, Honorary Publicity Officer, Honorary Secretary, Executive member, Afternoon Competition Committee member and umpire. When I was the Afternoon Competition Secretary, he assisted me greatly by setting up the first attempt of an electronic results system. Alex's son, Andrew and Graham, were regular A grade players for the St Ives club in recent seasons.

In recognition of Alex’s work in the association, the executive unanimously agreed to rename the Umpire of the Year trophy to the Alex Terry Memorial Umpire of the Year Trophy.

May he rest in peace.

Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18

SENIOR FINALS The HKHDCA held their senior semi-finals on Saturday 3rd & 10th March. With the assistance of 8 players with captain’s tickets, we provided coverage for all games except one. The senior grand finals were held on the 17th & 18th March in very hot conditions. Congratulations to Geoff and Simon for their selection to umpire the A grade final, played at Pennant Hills oval for the first time. Berowra won the toss and had no hesitation in , and at this stage, there was no warning of the nineteen wickets that were to fall by stumps on the first day. Wickets fell regularly, with Berowra 4/26 at the drinks break and 6/71 at lunch. When play resumed, two further wickets with the score at 91, then a further double with the final score at 108. Tim Onions topped the scoring for Berowra with 21 hard earned runs and Nick McNay put together a handy 18 runs towards the end of the innings. Mt Colah were in trouble early. Joe Leighton nicked the glove of the young star, Corey Miller, with the score at 5. Soon after, Faf Perrin had Warren Saldanha caught, with the score at 2-12. The eleventh over witnessed an amazing start to a stunning spell of bowling from spinner Jas Bassan, Berowra’s English import, who mesmerised the Mt Colah batsmen in bowling eight overs and taking 6 wickets for 1 run: two bowled, three LBW’s and a Caught and Bowled, so he didn’t need much help from his mates in the Berowra team. Mt Colah went from 2-28 to 9-33 in this last hour of play on the Saturday, with the last pair, Jayden Camp and Tim Buwalda taking the score to 9-44 at stumps, surviving five overs in adding 11 vital runs. On Day two, 7 runs were added to the overnight total, with Mt Colah dismissed for 51. The last partnership was the best with 18 runs. Given the great fightback by the Mt Colah team in their semi-final against Glenorie, the match resumed with Berowra coming out to build upon their first innings lead of some 57 runs. Opener Brad Rayner was the first to depart with the score at 11, with Scott Griffin being joined by Jasdev Bassan, who posted 20 runs, including four boundaries. Paul Cotter and Dave Steptoe were dismissed by the very consistent Jack Cincotta, before Nick McNay joined the determined Scott Griffin, and they added 40 runs to put paid to any hope the Mt Colah lads had of another miracle turnaround. Griffin finished with a very well compiled 62 not out, to be the only batsman in the match to pass the half century mark. Whilst the result was far from close, it was the final hour on Saturday that turned the match, thanks to Bassan’s unforgettable spell of bowling to take 6 wickets for a solitary run to spearhead the title defence for the Berowra team. That spell will live long in the memories of the A Grade Finals of our competition.

This season, the Margaret Peden under 15 Girls team was the deserved winners.

TRAINING As the season approached, we were faced with a new Code to the Laws of Cricket. This new code had become necessary to rationalize the amendments introduced since the 2000 Code and to list the Laws in a more logical order and format. The guiding objectives behind the changes have been to maintain a fair balance between bat and ball, to make the Laws easier to understand, to safeguard players’ welfare and to give umpires more mechanisms to address instances of poor behavior by players. To provide an understanding and effect of the changes, arrangements were made for Mr. Laurie Berg of NSWCU&SA to give a presentation to all our members before the season commenced. On 31st August, Laurie presented these changes to 7 members from Northern Districts CA, 5 from North Sydney and 22 of our members. Following this, our Association held two sessions for all captains and other interested parties to attend at least one to learn of the changes in this 2017 Code and the necessary alterations to the Local Playing rules. In addition, we conducted the usual Captains Ticket course over 2 nights. Whilst 62 had been registered by their clubs to attend, only 50 came on night one, with 56 sitting for the exam on night two, representing 14 clubs. The open book exam consisted of 2 parts – Part A covering captain’s responsibilities & some local rules requiring a pass of 85%; Part B consisting of general questions from the Laws of Cricket and Local Rules requiring a pass of 75%. Unfortunately, the preparation of the course this year was disrupted by the very late arrival of the printed MCC Law Books and Local Playing Rules, the latter because of last minute alterations due to the new Code. All participants in the exam were successful with 4 scoring 100%. It was the first time we had included a reference to the relevant Law/Rule(s) against each question on the exam paper to save candidates time in searching. The results for Part A were an improvement on the previous years. I would like to thank my fellow presenters – Geoff Hasler, Simon Moore and John McQuillan, the latter for preparation and setting of the exam papers. Barry McDonald - Training Officer

HORNSBY KU-RING-GAI & HILLS DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED TREASURER’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL, 2018

The deficit for the year ended 30 April 2018 was $522.50. This deficit was due to the investment in training materials and aides for umpires. The Association has cash reserves of $7,879.06 which has the Association well placed to invest in such areas as further training and assistance for the umpires. I am sure that the incoming executive will have plans to sensibly use these surplus funds for the benefit of all umpires and the game of cricket as a whole. The surplus is inflated by an advance of $4,000.00 received from HKHDCA which relates to fees for the 2018/19 season. I would like to express my thanks to Rob Hanich and Simon Moore for the manner in which they have maintained the match records this year which has enabled me to ensure that umpires were paid on a regular basis during the season. I would also like to express my thanks to Geoff Hasler and Scott Reid for always being available to authorise payments as and when required.

Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18 SOCIAL The Umpires’ Association was delighted to receive corporate sponsorship from Asquith Bowling Club again in 2017- 18 and thanks Anthony Ryan, Secretary Manager of ABC, and the Board of Directors for the club’s generous support. In support of this continued sponsorship, the HKHDCUA umpires’ shirts feature the club’s logo; all Executive, AGM and general committee meetings are held at the club, as well as post-match analysis of the days play and all social events.

The annual Bowls day was held on Friday 3rd November. The umpire’s challenged the A grade premiers Berowra and the newly promoted Mt Colah. Unfortunately, Mt Colah pulled out late, perhaps after scouting how good the umpires are. We thank the Berowra club for once again supporting this event. The night ended in a draw, the only competition Berowra didn’t win all season.

17

Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18

On Tuesday 5th December we held our Christmas dinner at Asquith Bowling Club, and in March we challenged the Asquith Bowling Club’s darts club. Jason & Scott defeated Geoff & Stephen in a tense double’s final.

The Annual presentation night was held at Asquith Bowling Club on 17th May. Fifteen members were in attendance with guest speaker, Hornsby District’s A grade captain Michael Solling. Michael gave an enjoyable speech on his experiences of A grade, the challenges of entering A grade as a young player, the dominant teams and players of the past, and how even this year’s competition was. The umpire group particularly enjoyed reminiscing about past players.

OVER THE ROPES Umpiring in other competitions with new colleagues can only be beneficial for an umpire’s growth and development. Several our members gained a variety of experiences outside of HKHDCA and representative competition matches. Matt Kean, state member for Hornsby, invited Alf James and Bruce Wood to officiate in the NSW Pollies v NSW Press on the hallowed turf at the SCG. Bruce also had the fantastic opportunity of umpiring 7 matches in Barbados as part of the Coaches Association’s tour of the West Indies.

Both Geoff Hasler and Bruce Wood umpired in the A W Green Shield. Geoff umpired in the first ever day night Green shield game between Parramatta & Hawkesbury at Bruce Purser Oval on 18th December.
