Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18 HORNSBY KU-RING-GAI & HILLS DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES’ ASSOCIATION 2017/18 Annual Report 1 Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18 President’s Report The 2017-18 season saw a ‘changing of the guard’ with Geoff Hasler standing down as president after 7 years at the helm and Steve Wilson as Honorary Secretary after 6 years. On behalf of Rob and myself I’d like to thank Geoff and Steve for their significant contributions to the Hornsby umpiring fraternity. In August we received the sad news that our patron and friend Alex Terry passed away. Many members of this association attended Alex’s funeral, a sign of his standing in the cricket community. With the introduction of the MCC Laws 2017, the largest rewrite of the code since 2000, Barry MacDonald and Geoff Hasler undertook a major review of these changes and made recommendations for amendments to the Senior Competition rules. They also conducted training sessions of the 2017 Law changes on top of their normal captain’s course training. I commend them on their dedication to the task of educating players and coaches in these changes. This season saw the 2nd most number of appointments in our history with 310. This was a slight drop from last season, in part due to there being no senior representative teams and no under 16 IDCA. For the regular senior competition, we lost Steve Wilson (retirement), Raja Mohan (injury) and Rob Hanich (playing), but gained Paul Pastras, Steve Redman and Scott Reid (part time). This enabled us to cover all turf games and have 2 umpires in most A grade games. The Umpire Association received one request to cover a lower grade game and three requests to cover under 16 games which we were able to cover 3 of these games at short notice. Fortunately, or should that be unfortunately, there was one disciplinary matter reported. One of the recommendations from the D&D matter is to encourage the umpire group to use a breach notice before behaviour escalates to a disciplinary matter, where applicable. In general, the yellow card system in soccer helps the referee control the game and improve player behaviour. The breach notice system used correctly should do the same. HKHDCUA was pleased to receive some generous sponsorship from Asquith Bowling Club. In return we held four functions at the club (refer social report), four executive meetings, our AGM as well as the club being the local watering hole for post-match analysis. I’d also like to thank Tim Davidson and his company Fortunity for sponsoring the cost of new name badges as well as the accounting software used for our accounts. There are many people to thank for their work and support this season. I’d especially like to thank Rob Hanich (Secretary) who performs the bulk of the day to day running of the umpires and took the position of this body on the Association’s executive. I’d also like to thank the other members of our Executive Committee: Tim Davidson (Treasurer), Simon Moore (Assistant Secretary) for doing the appointments for our representative fixtures, Steve Hill (Social Secretary) for organising all our social events and Annual Presentation Night, and Barry McDonald (Training Officer) for running the 2017 Code change nights and captain courses. Special thanks to Geoff Hasler who not only helped with the training, but also for organising the over rate cards and bowling markers. What’s in store for us next season? The executive has approved a new heat policy. Cricket Australia have published new youth pace bowling guidelines. Cricket Australia junior pathways – potential impacts with representative and junior games. The association will have an under 13 girls Mollie Dive representative team for the first time. The NSWDCA under 10 Foster shield potentially replaced with 2 divisions in the under 10 IDCA. Outcomes from the 5 year strategic plan on our senior and junior competitions. Work with the association to ensure there is an improved D&D procedure I hope to see you next season. Scott Reid 2 Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18 Vale – Alexander Thomas George Terry On the 19th August, Alex lost his brave battle with cancer. Alex retired from active umpiring in 2010, due to his deteriorating health, having umpired some 172 matches since we recorded our history in 2000. Alex was vice president of the Umpires association for four seasons and has been a Patron since 2013/14. He holds the record for most appointments in a season, 34 in the 2007/08 season. Alex was a long-term member of the Hornsby cricket community. At the association level, he started as a Representative team manager in 1995/96, delegate to the NSWJCU/NSWDCA & IDCA, Honorary Publicity Officer, Honorary Secretary, Executive member, Afternoon Competition Committee member and umpire. When I was the Afternoon Competition Secretary, he assisted me greatly by setting up the first attempt of an electronic results system. Alex's son, Andrew and Graham, were regular A grade players for the St Ives club in recent seasons. In recognition of Alex’s work in the association, the executive unanimously agreed to rename the Umpire of the Year trophy to the Alex Terry Memorial Umpire of the Year Trophy. May he rest in peace. 3 Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18 Ross Turner Cup The umpiring season kicks off with the annual Ross Turner Cup (RTC) and Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) fixtures. Disappointingly, no teams were entered in the senior competitions. The NSWDCA junior competitions run over 5 consecutive Sundays from mid-October, where our association supply one umpire per game for both home and away games. This sees our umpires travel from Newcastle to Wollongong, and everywhere in between (see map for 2017/18 games). The rounds are followed by qualifying finals, semi-finals and grand finals where the DCA appoint umpires. The following umpires received final appointments: Grand Final Under 14 Moore shield Bruce Wood Semi-Final Under 16 Watson shield Geoff Hasler Under 11 Creak shield Scott Reid Under 10 Foster shield Alf James Qualifying Final Under 16 Watson shield Bruce Wood & Geoff Hasler Under 13 Gee shield Alf James & Jason Fletcher Under 11 Creak shield Scott Reid Two Hornsby teams made the semi-finals: Under 11 Creak and Under 12 Cawsey shields.
