PRESIDENT’S REPORT What a great season for the Ramblers! We achieved our ultimate goal of winning the ASCA section 1 A Grade premiership, 19 years after our last. Our u14 team also took out their T20 competition and the season premiership, we had two competitive u16 teams with the Gold boys playing in the Grand Final, and 3 of our senior teams playing in finals with the C Grade also making it through to the Grand Final. Our u12s dominated and only lost to Happy Valley during the season, while our u10s enjoyed their cricket more than any junior team I have seen. We have also run two Milo In2Cricket courses, the second being assisted by SACA in memory of our good friend Ashley Bryant, who passed away just prior to the season commencing. Glen Rosie has provided a tribute to Ashley elsewhere in the magazine. SACA’s support provided for free registrations and coordinating the sessions which led to 65 kids signing up, making us the biggest In2Cricket centre in the State. We will seek to sign up as many of the children to join our u10s next season to continue their cricket journey with the Ramblers. Speaking of our u10s, we saw some significant changes to the game play and only 7 children per team which provided each child with more involvement in the game. They were coached by our young superstar Samyak Jain, whose infectious enthusiasm rubbed off on all the players and the parents and all got along brilliantly. A huge thankyou to all of our other junior coaches: • Brett Brodie who made the step up from the u10s to the u12s taking some underage boys with him and creating a dominate team that would have played in a grand final if it applied to u12s • Ian Lewis, in his first year as coach, took his team from the Green division into the Blue and dominated the entire season taking out the T20 competition and the premiership • Kelvin O’Driscoll and Justin Rowley for leading two u16 teams with slightly limited numbers against oppositions only fielding one team. Kelvin’s Gold team again participated in the Grand Final but unfortunately lost to Flagstaff Hill. In our senior competition we had our most successful season in many years with As, Bs & Cs all participating in finals while the D Grade development team missed out by less than a game, at the same time blooding many u14s and u16s throughout the season. Our A grade and B grade have played finals in the past 3 seasons without success so it was very satisfying to finally win both the semi-final and the grand final in the As. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for the B grade this year but our depth is looking even stronger next year which will help their cause. We didn’t play our best T20 cricket in the ASCA Grand Final but played very well along the way to get there. We welcomed an external coach for the first time in Andrew Lee, who brought with him many years of district and turf cricket experience. His knowledge of the game has been very important when passed on to our players and his on-field competitiveness took our A Grade to a higher level. A big thank you to our captains Jon Ferris, Justin Calderbank, Andrew Strunk, Steve Davenport and Fabian King for leading our teams and to Tony Benson for his invaluable batting advice each Thursday. Off field, our BBQ’s were boosted with a Bunnings BBQ and two community events at Weymouth Oval, combined with some very social outings on Thursday nights. One such night saw our official snag eating record matched by Matt Potts before he unfortunately reminded us of the difficulty of attempting the great feat. An amazing effort nonetheless and it proved to be a great social occasion. Our sponsors all continued with the second year of their two-year deals and we particularly thank KD Aire / DCM Services for their Gold Sponsorship courtesy of Josh Haussen. Should you need any air-conditioning needs, or particularly commercial air-conditioning installs or servicing, please give Josh a call. Our silver sponsors were once again Blackwood Butchers, IUGO Web Design, Blackwood Building, Intersport Blackwood, & Alspec Security. A further thanks to Dave Benson Caravans and Noarlunga Packaging for their sponsorship of the Quiz Night. These companies keep our finances afloat and allow us to keep our player fees down, so please support them like they do us. Next season will feature a new design of the club shirts so it would be a great time to join as a sponsor. Thank you to each of our committee members who are small in number but do an extraordinary amount of work. Our committee consisted of Glen Rosie as Secretary, Jason Dancer as Treasurer, Josh Haussen & Jarrad Benson as Senior Coordinators, Mandy O’Keefe as Junior Coordinator, Jarryd Simister as Social Director, and Luke Makereth as Facilities & Equipment coordinator. Next season we would like to open up the committee with extra positions and sub- roles to share the load and make our club even stronger. Please contact me or one of the committee members if you are interested in joining us. Our mattings on Weymouth oval and the two top practice wickets have now been replaced and a new matting installed at Hawthorndene Primary School. The cost of the mattings has been covered with grants from SACA and the Federal Government, combined with a raffle run by the Blackwood Lions club, who we thank. I’m sure the u10 parents will appreciate not having to lug a heavy matting out to the middle of the oval each Sunday morning! Lastly, our major on-going project is the Clubrooms at Hawthorndene. This year we achieved some significant milestones with Mitcham Council elected members agreeing to the use of land adjacent to the oval for our clubroom and public toilet, the council also agreeing to contribute $65k towards the project, and the new State Liberal Government has committed $80k on top of grants we aim to receive through the Office of Recreation & Sport. Together with approximately $55k we have now saved it means we have $200k guaranteed funding and our planning approvals have been lodged with council. Development approvals will follow and will be finalised based on the total amount of grant funding we receive in coming months. Thanks for being a part of our great club and we look forward to seeing you all again next season. Matt Smith, President JUNIOR COORDINATOR’S REPORT I would like to begin with the biggest of thankyous to you all. As my first year of Junior Coordinator I would have to say it’s been at times daunting, but extremely rewarding, but honestly the joy of watching all the kids participate in a game I love has been the most rewarding of all. Cricket was ingrained into me by my dear Nanna... she would forget to feed Pop when a test was on. My early memories were that of sitting around watching a game with her. She would have loved to have been given the chance to play herself and now with such a growth in women’s cricket, I do feel rather excited about the future. The season began with changes to the Under 10 format. After much research, deliberation and planning the junior format was adjusted to have a smaller team, modified pitch, ball and scoring format. The game was redesigned for each child to have the opportunity to grow in their skills, setting them up for their future cricket. Team coach Samyak and Josh (Training Assistant) worked hard with the lads teaching the new format and the preparation work paid off with all the lads making significant achievements this season. Our Under 12’s, 14’s and 16’s had no changes to their formats this year. This group of lads at times were hampered by the lack of players, but this did not dampen their enthusiasm for the game. Trainings were well attended and supported by coaches and parents. Game days would not have run so smoothly if the families didn’t have an active role. Each week it was a pleasure to see everyone working together. Our Under 12 team like the 10’s do not play for points, but reflecting back on their games there was more wins than losses making them one of the competitive sides of the Association. Our Under 14 team had a fabulous season winning not only the Association Trophy but the 20/20 competition as well. Lead by Ian, they started off in the green competition but after a couple of rounds they were reclassified to play in the blue/gold competition. I was privileged to be there to see the boys win both of their trophies and can say they won with decorum and respect to the other teams. Well done guys! The Under 16 team’s throughout the season struggled filling two teams each week. For the blue team only having 10 players from the onset put them on the back foot, to which they usually fell short just by not having the numbers. This did not deter their enthusiasm in any way, as it was a pleasure to see them work together through their trials with pride and dignity on their faces. The Under 16 gold team did have the benefit of having a full team which helped considerably. Although at times major fill in recruiting did occur, they played extremely well throughout the season to win a place in the final.
