Congratulations to Mr David Neil being named as a patron of the Association and to the following players on their Playing Life Memberships: - Paul McGowran Keswick 250 games including 5 Inter-Association. Michael Galliford Glenelg ANA 251 games. Matthew Smith Coro Ramblers 252.5 games. Terry Martin North Haven 260 games. Michael Todd ICC Sharks 250 games includes 3 Inter-Association. Ashley Marshall Warradale 259 games. We all will again wish for an incident free year with much trepidation and hope, we play the game for enjoyment and fun and need to take a step backwards sometimes and remember this fact, especially when put in the perspective of our families. Sport teaches us a lot about life and ourselves and all we have to do is take heed of those lessons and place them into actions. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the information in Editorial and book this year. Special thanks to Phil Davis, John Voyzey. West Press, all the club contributors to the book and my family for allowing me the privilege of compiling the book every year. HORNSBY KU-RING-GAI & HILLS DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC 89th ANNUAL REPORT FOR SEASON 2014-15 1 THE PATHWAY THROUGH A LIFETIME OF CRICKET Most cricketers start their playing career at an early age in the backyard with “Test Matches” against Mum, Dad or their siblings. Playing rules are simple – a boundary four Thank you to our Sponsors into the rose bushes, but over the fence into the neighbour’s yard is six and out, plus having to go and recover the ball! All Clubs, members and associates are encouraged to Just as the child starts his/her formal education at kindergarten level, Kanga (or, as it has support the products and/or services provided by our been re-badged over the years for marketing purposes, Milo Cricket and In2Cricket) is the kindergarten of a club which, like the school system, is the first step in the pathway various sponsors that takes the child to a possible lifetime of involvement in and enjoyment from the game. At that age, children and their parents are reluctant to move straight into competitive hardball cricket, but are looking for an introductory non-competitive skills and fun based structured program to introduce them to the present day game. This starting platform allows development of hand/eye co-ordination and cricket skills but importantly sees the child become active and socialising in a team/group environment. It also gives mums, dads and even grandparents an opportunity to participate and be involved in the activity with their children and thus build stronger family relationships – and, for the club, provides a source of parent volunteers in the future as the child advances through the junior age groups.

Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18 HORNSBY KU-RING-GAI & HILLS DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES’ ASSOCIATION 2017/18 Annual Report 1 Umpires’ Association – Annual Report – 2017/18 President’s Report The 2017-18 season saw a ‘changing of the guard’ with Geoff Hasler standing down as president after 7 years at the helm and Steve Wilson as Honorary Secretary after 6 years. On behalf of Rob and myself I’d like to thank Geoff and Steve for their significant contributions to the Hornsby umpiring fraternity. In August we received the sad news that our patron and friend Alex Terry passed away. Many members of this association attended Alex’s funeral, a sign of his standing in the cricket community. With the introduction of the MCC Laws 2017, the largest rewrite of the code since 2000, Barry MacDonald and Geoff Hasler undertook a major review of these changes and made recommendations for amendments to the Senior Competition rules. They also conducted training sessions of the 2017 Law changes on top of their normal captain’s course training. I commend them on their dedication to the task of educating players and coaches in these changes. This season saw the 2nd most number of appointments in our history with 310. This was a slight drop from last season, in part due to there being no senior representative teams and no under 16 IDCA. For the regular senior competition, we lost Steve Wilson (retirement), Raja Mohan (injury) and Rob Hanich (playing), but gained Paul Pastras, Steve Redman and Scott Reid (part time). This enabled us to cover all turf games and have 2 umpires in most A grade games.

® Midland Midland Bank pie vj KES CHRONICLE 1982 General editor: Humphrey Gyde Creative Writing editor: Jon Andrews Events editor: Andrew Mendoza Photographic editor: Ian Lewis Assistant editors: Stephen Linley Richard Hitchcock Advisory editor: Kate Barnett 9^ EDITORIAL lt is regrettable but true that very few people at KES read the Chronicle from cover to cover. Rather they tend only to read those sections which concern themselves or their in terests, be they sport, art or creative writing. This ¡s a lamentably insular approach and threatens the validity of publishing such an expensive magazine; after all, for those nar- cissists who wish merely to see their ñames in print, the Blue Book is much cheaper and gives addresses and telephone numbers as well. The Chronicle is ¡ntended to reflect, and more or less succeeds in reflecting, all aspects of life at KES. I would hope that this year more people will do it ¡ustice and read it more thoroughly. Humphrey Gyde You will notice that the Chronicle is a little slimmer this year. lt is not that we are short of material to publish, but rather that the magazine had to be cut for practical reasons, largely economic: the recession affects all of us, sooner or later! Apologies, therefore, to those who submitted work which will not be found between these pages; but please don't give up hope, try again next year. Thanks are again due to all contributors: to those who produced the goods; to my editorial team, who proved faithful and hard-working to the last, a week into their holi- day; to the Chief Master for his continued support; to the advertisers, the loyal and the new; and, last but by no means least, to Ray Fisher and Jenny Norman for the technical production of the magazine.

  • Declaration 2017-18
PRESIDENT’S REPORT What a great season for the Ramblers! We achieved our ultimate goal of winning the ASCA section 1 A Grade premiership, 19 years after our last. Our u14 team also took out their T20 competition and the season premiership, we had two competitive u16 teams with the Gold boys playing in the Grand Final, and 3 of our senior teams playing in finals with the C Grade also making it through to the Grand Final. Our u12s dominated and only lost to Happy Valley during the season, while our u10s enjoyed their cricket more than any junior team I have seen. We have also run two Milo In2Cricket courses, the second being assisted by SACA in memory of our good friend Ashley Bryant, who passed away just prior to the season commencing. Glen Rosie has provided a tribute to Ashley elsewhere in the magazine. SACA’s support provided for free registrations and coordinating the sessions which led to 65 kids signing up, making us the biggest In2Cricket centre in the State. We will seek to sign up as many of the children to join our u10s next season to continue their cricket journey with the Ramblers. Speaking of our u10s, we saw some significant changes to the game play and only 7 children per team which provided each child with more involvement in the game. They were coached by our young superstar Samyak Jain, whose infectious enthusiasm rubbed off on all the players and the parents and all got along brilliantly. A huge thankyou to all of our other junior coaches: • Brett Brodie who made the step up from the u10s to the u12s taking some underage boys with him and creating a dominate team that would have played in a grand final if it applied to u12s • Ian Lewis, in his first year as coach, took his team from the Green division into the Blue and dominated the entire season taking out the T20 competition and the premiership • Kelvin O’Driscoll and Justin Rowley for leading two u16 teams with slightly limited numbers against oppositions only fielding one team.

  • Sport in the Grammar School by Gordon
Sport in the Grammar School By Gordon Price, Harry Thomas John Rees and Wynne Oliver Rugby From the days of Dr. Idris Jones, Watkin Thomas, Elvet Jones, Bill Clement and even earlier , R.T. Gabe, rugby was the dominant sport of the Grammar School. Despite the difficulties of the war years, rugby maintained its high standards. Facilities were primitive compared with today, and after –game washing was carried out in small hand basins with cold water. Fixtures were limited, the greatest distance being travelled was to Cardigan. Inter-school rivalry remained very much as before, especially the clashes with great rivals such as Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen : Gowerton and Neath Grammar Schools being eagerly anticipated by all and sundry. Messers Harding Rolfe, Jack Morriss, Jack Davies, Joseph Lloyd and Leslie Sutherns were in charge at that time. Of particular note during the war years was the winning of the Welsh A.T.C Cup in 1944 at Bridgend. The whole School journeyed by special train in support of the School Squadron (556 Squadron) team. The team that day consisted of Jimmy Bearne, Roy Huggett, Owen Jones (Capt.), H. Raymond Williams, Ernest Morris, Eric Edmunds, Harry Evans, Raymond Williams, “Robbie” Williams, Cliff Williams, Benny Hancock, Ken Bowen, “Dick” Thornton Davies, John Lovering and Alan Phillips. Following this, Glyn Price, Geoffrey Tucker and Harry Thomas were awarded their Welsh Secondary School “caps” and went on to become Wales A.T.C. internationals together with Dai Guest Rees, Wyndham Simmons and Reg Davies. The first A.T.C. International was played at Stradey Park against Scotland, where Harry Thomas Kicked two “impossible” penalties from inside his own half.
