Needles will be speaking but the really great thing, he says, is that his wife Heath is laying out a dessert table. “Even if they don’t like the book, they will love the desserts,” he said. “This is home turf for these stories, this is where they came from so I like talking to my home audience,” said Needles. He said he has chosen to include about 80 columns written over the past 20 years. “I picked out the ones I liked and they tell a story of a family making its way in the countryside over a period of great change,” said Needles, “the party line gives way to the internet and small farms turn to agribusiness.” Events continue throughout the weekend with Terry O’Reilly, also Staff photo: Trina Berlo at Duntroon Hall on the Sunday, Steve Lucas (from right) is directing actors Heidi Lynch and Alex Crowther in One Good Marriage Sept. 30 at and country singer Dan Davidson Dunedin Hall during Small Halls Festival.

The coming week and a half will see 4 performances with great high energy live shows coming. The 6th and 11th bring some blues our way (from N'Orleans and Kansas), Searson Band from the Valley will release their latest CD Fade and Shine and The Bright Light Social Hour will light it up on the 10th. The next Soundcheck is July 25th. Soundcheck is our version of an open mic hosted by Mike McCormick. There is no cover charge and it will be a monthly event. HVAC plans are still being worked on and the permit for the new fire exit path is underway. We're also going to upgrade our tables (they'll look close to the same and be alot sturdier ;-) Friday July 6th; Jumpin' Johnny Sansone - New Orleans ($20) On the ever-reliable advice of Steve Marriner, we booked Jumpin Johnny Sansone on the first Friday of Bluesfest...in case you're a blues fan who's not planning on making the trip into Ottawa for Blues this year! Johnny plays guitar, harmonica & accordion. His songwriting is often awarded and acclaimed and his voice seems made to sing the Blues. 'The Lord is Waiting and the Devil is Too' was voted song of the year at the 2012 Blues Music Awards. TIMO JOKELA & MARIA HUHMARNIEMI ARCTIC ARTS SUMMIT 2019 CONTENT, REFLECTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS UNIVERSITY OF LAPLAND, ROVANIEMI 2019 3–5 JUNE 2019 ROVANIEMI, FINLAND THEARCTICASALABORATORY FORSUSTAINABLEARTAND CULTURALPOLICY www.ulapland.fi/arcticartsummit2019 Timo Jokela & Maria Huhmarniemi Introduction to Arctic Arts Summit 2019 report The international Arctic Arts Summit (AAS) 2019 took place June 3–5, 2019 in Rovaniemi, Finland. Representatives of ministries from Arctic countries, cultural and educational institutions, non-governmental organisations and artist unions discussed arts, culture, sustainability and circumpolar collaboration. There were 450 participants from over 20 countries, and the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, was the patron of the summit. The event aimed to strengthen international interaction and the vitality of the arts and culture sector. The discussions were accompanied by a comprehensive art programme, including exhibitions, concerts and performances, which was produced by art institutions and organizations in Lapland in collaboration with their Arctic partners. While contemporary art can be a powerful means to investigate, report and assimilate critical issues into the public consciousness, the art programme of the Summit added provocative, as well as sensitive contributions, to the dialogue. The Arctic region is changing rapidly. Ecological, cultural, social and economic changes pose challenges for the well-be- ing of the population and sustainable development, although some of these changes also create new possibilities. At AAS 2019, the challenges and circumstances of the Arctic were seen as ‘laboratory’ in which sustainable arts and culture policy could be devel- oped in collaboration with all of the Arctic counties. The key aim of AAS 2019 was to support the arts and culture sector in circumpolar collaboration.
