The world’s largest flower is the Rafflesia arnoldii. It is an extremely rare

flower that grows in the rainforests of Indonesia. It’s the coolest thing ever!

It grows to be about 3 feet across and it can weigh up to 15 pounds. Since

it is a parasitic plant, it attaches itself to a host plant. Then, it takes its water

and nutrients from the host plant. Therefore, it does not have leaves, roots,

or a stem. The wildest characteristic of this enormous flower is its smell.

When it is in bloom it emits a terrible odor. The repulsive odor smells like

rotting meat. That’s why it is often called the “corpse flower.” The smell is

meant to attract insects that will pollinate the flower. Fortunately, the

flower lasts just for a few days!

The largest, most complete rex fossil ever discovered is nicknamed “Sue.” Sue was discovered by Sue Hendrickson, a paleontologist, in the summer of 1990. Soon after she made her discovery, it became clear that she discovered something special. The fossil that Hendrickson discovered had nearly 90% of the Tyrannosaurus rex’s remains. This was incredible since the previous T. rex discoveries produced only about 50% of the skeleton. In October 1997, the fossil was auctioned off for an absurd amount, $8.36 million. It was the highest price ever paid for a dinosaur fossil. Today, a life-sized skeleton cast of Sue, the T. rex, is on display in ’s Field Museum. It took workers more than 30,000 hours to prepare replicas of each bone in Sue’s skeleton. There were over 250 bones and 58 teeth in all! Sue’s size makes the skeleton impressive. She is 40.5 feet long from tail to nose and 13 feet tall at the hip. The discovery of Sue has allowed scientists to study dinosaur biology, growth, and behavior. However, the most impressive part of Sue’s discovery is actually imagining the dinosaur roaming North America nearly 67 million years ago!

1. What is a paleontologist? 4. Why was the discovery of Sue so impressive? A. A scientist that studies biology D. Scientists were able to find 90% of the fossil. B. As you know, species need food, water, shelter, and space to survive. However, habitat destruction is threatening the survival of species. Unfortunately, fewer national wildlife habitats remain each year. If we continue to build more homes, farms, and industries where wild animals nest and breed, many animals will die. Our government needs to take a stand against the destruction of wildlife habitats. People need to stop endangering our wildlife. They can do so by reducing, reusing, and recycling to protect wildlife habitats. Also, people can write letters to legislatures to encourage them to support laws that protect animals. In addition, people should rally together and donate to wildlife organizations.

1. Identify two FACTS from the passage. • • 2. How would you describe the author’s OPINION of wildlife conservation?

3. List two OPINIONS that demonstrate the writer’s viewpoint. • •

LESSON 3 Quite a Flower READING

1. Identify two FACTS from the passage. • The world’s largest flower is the Rafflesia arnoldii.

• It grows to be about 3 feet across and it can weigh up to 15 pounds. 2. Identify two OPINIONS from the passage. • It’s the coolest thing ever!

• The wildest characteristic of this enormous flower is its smell. 3. Change one fact from the passage into an opinion. FACT --- It grows to be about 3 feet across and it can weigh up to 15 pounds. OPINION --- The best part about this flower is its incredible size.

The largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever discovered is nicknamed “Sue.” Sue was discovered by Sue Hendrickson, a paleontologist, in the summer of 1990. Today, a life-sized skeleton cast of Sue, the T. rex, is on display in Chicago’s Field Museum.

• Wildlife conservation involves protecting animals and their habitats.

• Species need food, water, shelter, and space to survive. 2. How would you describe the author’s OPINION of wildlife conservation?

The author’s opinion of wildlife conservation is that it needs to be a priority for the government and all people.

3. List two OPINIONS that demonstrate the writer’s viewpoint.

• Our government needs to take a stand against the destruction of wildlife habitats. • People need to stop endangering our wildlife.
