Screening of 239 Paraguayan Plant Species for Allelopathic Activity Using the Sandwich Method

E, Mail: [email protected] (Received in revised form: May 25, 2018 ) ABSTRACT We evaluated the allelopathic potential of 239 Paraguayan plants using the sandwich method. The samples were collected from 3-different regions of Paraguay. A total of 130 species, 47 families were collected from (i). Botanical Garden and Zoo of Asunción and its surroundings, (ii). 71 species (40 families) from Mbaracayú Natural Reserve and (iii). 38 species (25 families) from the Chaco region. We found the species with high inhibitory potential, such as Cleome aculeata (Cleomaceae), which completely inhibited the germination of lettuce. Others spp. strongly inhibited the growth of lettuce seedlings viz., Strychnos brasiliensis (Loganiaceae), Pterogyne nitens (Fabaceae), Sorocea bonplandii (Moraceae), Rollinia emarginata (Annonaceae), Microstachys hispida (Euphorbiaceae), Prosopis ruscifolia (Fabaceae) and Senna sp. (Fabaceae). These results demonstrated high allelopathic potential of Paraguayan plant species. ON THE DRY SIDE SEPTEMBER 2018 CENTRAL COAST CACTUS & SUCCULENT SOCIETY SEPTEMBER SPEAKERS OF THE MONTH: MIKE BUSH & ALLANA CHILDS Growing and Selling Succulents at Cal Poly Horticulture Unit While Cal Poly has successfully sold succulents in the distant past, the current effort only began four years ago when Mike Bush was tasked with upgrading the remaining plants and employing students to further Cal Poly’s “Learn by Doing” motto. Growing slowly and selling primarily 4” plants in the Poly Plant Shop, operations grew to culminate in SUCCULENTOPIA! this past May – returning some $14,000 to be used to continue to support more student employees. In fact, the crew of student succulent growers had grown to five people working up to 10 hours per week, with the Stu- dent Succulent Manager – Allana Childs - often working 20-30 hours weekly in her final quarter this spring. Allana had come to work with our succulents nearly three years previously, and had worked her way quickly to a lead position. Her work drew the attention of Succulent Gardens in Castroville, who committed to hire her last fall, a full two quarters prior to her graduation! Allana Childs chose to utilize her experience growing succulents at Cal Poly for her senior project which resulted in a Manual that will aid students (and Mike!) in continuing to grow quality succulents. Allana and Mike will present her Manual and other growing tips from Cal Poly at our September Meeting. Allana recently graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Horti- culture and a minor in Biology. -

As Moraceae nativas do Brasil englobam principalmente plantas lenhosas de porte arbóreo que participam do estágio mais avançado das matas de restinga. Através de bibliografia especializada, consultas a herbários e coletas de campo, objetivou-se elucidar a taxonomia, identificar os habitats preferenciais, atualizar a área de ocorrência e reconhecer o atual estado de conservação das espécies dessa família. Nas restingas fluminenses ocorrem cinco gêneros e 20 espécies de Moraceae. Na Formação de Mata Seca acham-se presentes 16 espécies, na Mata Inundável oito e na Arbustiva Fechada seis. Dessas espécies, 15 encontram-se ameaçadas de extinção, principalmente: Ficus pulchella e Maclura brasiliensis. Palavras -chave: Urticales, taxonomia, Mata Atlântica, conservação Abstract Restingas are sandy coastal plains with a rich flora and distinct vegetation types. The native Brazilian Moraceae include primarily tall woody plants growing in the more developed stages of restinga forests, but they also include herbs and shrubs. Specialized bibliography, herbarium material and field collections, were used to elucidate the taxonomy, recognize the preferred habitats, update the area of occurrence and to recognize the current conservation status of its species. There are five genera and 20 species in Moraceae. In the Dry Forest formation occur 16 species, eight in Swamp Forest and six in Closed Shrub. -

A literature search resulted in ten studies with 376 listed species, distributed Medicinal plants in 94 families and 273 genera. Asteraceae family had the greater representation, followed Open-air markets by Lamiaceae and Fabaceae. Solanum was the most frequent genus. Two hundred and Rio de Janeiro twenty four species could be considered potentially toxic or potentially interact with Toxic plants other drugs/medicines. Eighteen species are referred as “not for use during pregnancy”, Urban Ethnobotany and 3 “not for use while nursing”. These results are a source of concern since in Brazil, as it is worldwide, there is the notion that plants can never be harmful. -

Ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants was conducted in Nossa Senhora Aparecida do Chumbo District (NSACD), located in Pocone,´ Mato Grosso, Brazil using semi- structured questionnaires and interviews.
