By Tony Taccone and Bennett S
BY TONY TACCONE AND BENNETT S. COHEN, ADAPTED FROM THE NOVEL BY SINCLAIR LEWIS SOUND DESIGN AND MUSIC BY PAUL JAMES PRENDERGAST DIRECTED BY LISA PETERSON DEAR FRIENDS, Four years ago, in the lead-up to the 2016 election, Berkeley Rep produced Tony Taccone and Bennett Cohen’s adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ frighteningly prescient novel. With a desire to see the story reach the widest possible audience, and celebrating the impulse that led the wpa in 1936 to share the original stage version of Lewis’ novel for free with 21 theatres across the country, Berkeley Rep offered the rights to Tony and Bennett’s adaptation to theatres, community centers, universities — anyone who wanted to put together their own production or reading. And now, in 2020, this story feels all the more vital, and the need to share it widely even more compelling. I am honored that more than 75 organizations from more than 20 states have partnered with us to share this production of It Can’t Happen Here for free with their audiences and communities. We are joined in this effort by long-time theatre colleagues, by universities from Howard in Wash- ington, DC to Saint Cloud State in Minnesota (near Lewis’ hometown), by libraries, community centers, and radio stations. I am deeply grateful to Tony and Bennett, director Lisa Peterson, sound designer Paul James Prendergast and his small but mighty team, and this extraordinary cast who have collaborated across miles and time zones, through wildfires and new technology, for their conviction that the- atre matters, that narrative helps us to see the world more clearly, and that together we have the capacity to effect change. -

Contact: Kelly Davis (212) 753-5959 ext. 121 EAST-COAST PREMIERE OF JANE MARTIN’S AWARD-WINNING “FLAGS” SET TO STIR ELECTION YEAR HEARTS & MINDS AT 59E59 Flags, a fierce political drama by the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Jane Martin that tells the story of a working-class American family and their loss of a son in Iraq, is set for its east-coast premiere at 59e59, presented by the Firefly Theater. Performances begin Wednesday, September 12 for a limited engagement through Sunday, September 30. Originally commissioned by the Guthrie Theater and premiered at Mixed Blood, Flags went on to an acclaimed three-month run in Los Angeles at the Odyssey Theatre. This fall, the Firefly Theater will bring Chris Mulkey and Karen Landry, who originated the lead roles at Mixed Blood and the Odyssey, along with the other stars of the LA run, to 59e59. In Flags, Jane Martin uses the structure of a Greek tragedy to explore how the grief of a single American family must inevitably ripple through us all. The hero is Eddie, a Vietnam vet and lifelong garbage collector, who is outraged when he learns that his eldest son Carter, a military specialist, has been killed and mutilated after reassignment to garbage duty cleaning the streets of Baghdad. A military Chaplain brings Eddie and his wife a US flag, and, in his absent-minded grief, Eddie hangs it on his roof upside down, a military signal of distress. Eddie’s choices and his refusal to right the flag when community members demand it lead to first local and then national controversy and media attention. -

(February 10, 2021) – Round House Theatre announces three virtual productions to conclude its 43rd season. The Spring 2021 Season offers three moving, one- person performances: Colman Domingo’s A Boy and His Soul, directed by Craig Wallace; Lucy Alibar’s Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up, directed by Round House Artistic Director Ryan Rilette; and Young Jean Lee’s We’re Gonna Die, directed by Paige Hernandez. All three productions will be filmed live on the Round House stage and available for on- demand streaming during limited runs. See page 3 for full season programming details. Artistic Director Ryan Rilette reflects on the 2020-2021 Season, stating, “This season, Round House—like so many of our peer institutions—has had to try new things, explore new ways of making art, and figure out how to build a sense of community in a world where we are unable to gather physically. The second half of our season focuses on three solo performances. In this moment when we’re all trapped in our own individual homes and our own individual realities, we hope these remarkable, deeply personal individual performances by celebrated local actors can bridge that divide and return to us a sense of the togetherness we all so deeply miss. -
