SPORT ROOFLESS SURF SHOP & SCHOOL Via Mazzini 153 - 16031 Bogliasco www.roofless.it | [email protected] Contact Serena on +39 010 347 2287 Roofless are in Bogliasco just outside Genoa city limits. Give them a call and you can organize a surf lesson with them, or alternatively rent their gear and go on a surf, paddle boarding trip or hire a kayak. In the winter there are often decent waves for surfing. Covid rules mean that distancing is necessary in the changing rooms and communal areas but fortunately surfing and getting on the water on a nice day is still a fantastic experience in Liguria, even in December! They also organize evening surf training sessions in nearby Nervi, at 7 or 8pm – contact Serena for more information. SPORT BLACKWAVE SURF SCHOOL Passeggiata Punta S. Anna, box 10, 16036 Recco (GE) www.blackwave.it | [email protected] Contact +39 0185 1760391 or +39 333 2515349 Blackwave are based just behind the boardwalk in the coastal town of Recco, just 25 minutes’ drive from Genoa, to the East. The surf school is very established and nearly every morning you will see groups of surfers in their suits bobbing up and down and catching the waves, which form ideally in Recco Bay. Lookjng for a group crew or teambuilding activity? Why not get them all surfing – group lessons start at about €30 for a 90-minute lesson, with all gear supplied. The base has a wonderful surf shop for some cool purchases and Recco on its own is worth visiting, as it is world famous for its very thin cheese focaccia with bubbling salty cheese! SPORT OUTDOOR PORTOFINO Via Duca degli Abruzzi, 62, 16034 Portofino (GE) www.outdoorportofino.com/en/ Contact them on +39 334 329 0804 This fun group of water sports expert instructors have their main summer base in Niasca Bay, between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino (no introduction needed!). In the winter they offer the same service from their Santa Margherita Ligure base. We can recommend their kayak and SUP hire – a paddle into Portofino’s beautiful centre in the heart of winter is a charming experience – as well their more extreme activities, like kayak excursions and coasteering activities all along the rocky coast. All gear is included and their English is of course perfect. Finally – if you don’t feel like getting wet, they also offer bike and e-bike hire, starting at €20 per day, so you can discover the Portofino the leisurely way! 3 #DECEMBER-JANUARY HOLIDAY SEASON 2020 genoasuperyachthub.com info: [email protected] SPORT - STAY ACTIVE STAY SAFE SPORT SKATEBOARDING Giardini Giovi - Giardini Rodari There is a public skate park in the city centre in the Giardini Govi, very near the Giano port entrance, and another in the Eastern Sestri Ponente quarter of Genoa in the Giardini Rodari. For skateboard and snowboard/ski equipment there is a well- equipped shop at the end of Corso Italia in Via Caprera 26/r called Spinnaker, www. spinnaker.ge.it TREKKING AND VISITING – HINTS OF THE MONTH Liguria has some extraordinarily beautiful scenery and some great walks and hikes, for all skill levels. Some of these are in urban Genoa – like the Forts walk and the Aqueduct trail, whilst others are out on the Eastern or Western rivieras or in the interior TREKKING URBAN TREKKING IN GENOA GENOA’S FORTS AND WALLS: AN URBAN PARK Just a few minutes from the town centre is the city’s forts and walls park, Parco delle Mura, a Protected Nature Area of local interest: the walls that give the park its name are in fact the so-called New Walls (Mura Nuove), built in the 1600s to fortify city and port defences. The walls are preserved in very good conditions and encircle Genoa in a giant embrace, almost invisible to those who live and work down below in the city streets. On a fair day the views are stunning - for the complete route, check out here on the Visit Genoa site www.visitgenoa.it/en/muraeforti TREKKING THE HISTORIC AQUEDUCT This is an impressive structure built to water the city at the beginning of the 1200's and then expanded and improved until the middle of 1600. Today it represents a very interesting hiking trail both from a natural and historical point of view. It was built in Roman times from the bottom of the Giro del Fullo, between Molassana and Prato and in the medieval age was further expanded to a higher altitude (about 50 meters), thanks to the higher slope, to reach the western neighborhoods of city. The path runs from the quarters of Molassana to Staglieno, crossing much of the ancient trail between ancient gardens, mixed forests and hidden valleys and reaching the big Geirato and Staglieno bridges-true siphons, true engineering masterpieces of the time. For the complete route, check out here on the Visit Genoa site www.visitgenoa.it/en/historic-aqueduct-0 4 #DECEMBER-JANUARY HOLIDAY SEASON 2020 genoasuperyachthub.com info: [email protected] TREKKING AND VISITING – HINTS OF THE MONTH TREKKING EASTERN RIVIERA GOLFO DEL TIGULLIO AND GOLFO PARADISO The fashionable Golfo del Tigullio hosts the most famous jet set and worldwide known localities of the Italian Riviera such as Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure, whilst Camogli lie in the aptly names “Paradise Gulf”. These localities will surprise you for their elegant shops and cafes placed in tiny narrow streets among colorful fishermen houses. Not to be missed is the enchanting San Fruttuoso Abbey, reachable only by sea or after a long and beautiful hike, with a steep final descent. Further down the coast towards La Spezia, lies Sestri Levante, a thin portion of land settled between two enchanting bays. All of these destinations are worth an easy day trip from Genoa. TREKKING EASTERN RIVIERA CINQUE TERRE AND PORTOVENERE Further East of Sestri Levante and close to the border with Tuscany, you could dedicate a weekend visiting one of the most spectacular and romantic areas of the whole region, that includes two Natural Parks and one Marine Park. Considered one of the jewels of the Bel Paese, in 1997 the Cinque Terre became part of the Unesco World Heritage. You can visit by catching the train and without the hordes of international tourists at the moment this place is now as enchanting as it was twenty years ago. This amazing unique portion of land embraces the five fishing villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, all connected by easy hiking paths from which you can admire stunning views. Further down the coast towards Tuscany, we also recommend visiting scenic Portovenere which enraptures visitors with its maze of staircases and tiny streets, perched on a natural promontory facing the Islands of Palmaria, Tino e Tinetto. Beloved to the romantic poets like Byron and Shelley, thanks to the natural beauty and the history of this small gem, Portovenere and its archipelago were recently made part of the Unesco World Heritage. 5 #DECEMBER-JANUARY HOLIDAY SEASON 2020 genoasuperyachthub.com info: [email protected] TREKKING AND VISITING – HINTS OF THE MONTH TREKKING WESTERN RIVIERA NOLI, FINAL BORGO AND VEREZZI This Riviera, called the Riviera di Ponente, has a more down to earth feel to it when compared to the Golfo del Tigullio, nevertheless it is home to some delightful places like Noli and Finale Ligure (particularly characteristic is Final Borgo). Noli is a small medieval town with an amazingly intact medieval fortification wall that climbs up the mount until it reaches the 11th century castle, whilst Final Borgo is a medieval enchanting village considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy – just as are Borgio Verezzi and Noli - for further information take a look at the following website www.borghitalia.it/index_en.php. Varigotti is also certainly worth a stop, with its beautiful colourful houses right on the beach, as well as Alassio, more touristy and perfect for a day off shopping.
