Environmental Studies Thesis The Vegan Journey An Exploration of Vegan Experiences with Vegans from Burlington, Vermont Kelsey Steele May 1, 2013 University of Vermont Advisors Kit Anderson, Ph.D. Tyler Doggett, Ph.D. Stephanie Kaza, Ph.D. 1 Abstract People become vegan for three reasons: environment, health and ethics. Although there are many societal benefits to a vegan lifestyle, only 2% of the U.S. population is currently vegan. Past research has shown that, as a group, vegans’ behavior matches their beliefs. This study is based on semi-structured interviews with 17 vegans in Burlington, Vermont. The purpose of the study was to better understand why and how these vegans became and maintained a vegan lifestyle. An analysis of the interviews showed that the participants went through four stages in their vegan journey: Readiness, Spark, Learning and Telling, and Continuing Journey. -

Although vegetarian diets have been popular in many cultures for centuries, a more organized and defined version of veganism as we know it today did not emerge until the mid-1940s. Although the origins and nature of vegetarianism and veganism have been researched in depth for decades, this lifestyle has scarcely been evaluated as a social movement. Therefore, I seek to fill this gap in knowledge and describe veganism as a social movement and evaluate its social effects. I have gathered historical and sociological data and theories from a variety of sources. I combine this data in order to thoroughly illustrate the history, nature, and future of vegans as a social movement and show how it has contributed to social change. The sociological definitions of what constitutes a social movement as described by Charles Tilly and Sidney Tarrow will illustrate the many ways vegans can be viewed as a social movement. -

Before the appearance of Gotama Buddha, the brahmin magandha1 became an ascetic (tāpasa) and lived in the Himalayas with 500 brahmin youths as disciples. They ate neither meat nor fish. As a result of a deficiency of salt, vinegar and other minerals, they succumbed to jaundice (pau,roga). To heal themselves, they came down once a year from their hermitage in search of salt and vinegar. The villagers nearby received them with great honour and served them well for the 4 months they were there. On their leaving for mountain hermitage, the people would give them oil, rice grains and other provisions. (SnA 1:278 f) 1.1.2 One day, the Buddha and his monks visited the same village, and the villagers, after listening to his discourse, became his followers. That year when magandha and his disciples came to the village, the villagers did not show their enthusiasm as before. magandha was excited on hearing the name “Buddha,” and asked thrice, expressing his joy and anticipation of meeting the Buddha who had arisen in the world. He wished to know whether the Buddha partook of āmagandha (by which he meant meat and fish).
