PARC Prisoner Resource Directory - Last Updated April 2014 1 Core Volunteers B♀ (rita d. brown) Greetings, April 2014 Pat Foley Scott Nelson Welcome to the latest edition of the PARC Prisoner Resource Directory, which has been fully updated as of April 2014. We wish to thank those readers who have written back this past year with letters Sissy Pradier and stories and who have returned our evaluation form, as this allows us to get a better idea of the true Penny Schoner readership of the directory and let us know which direction to take when adding new categories or information. Special thanks again to those who pass on the directory – according to your reports, our Taeva Shefler resource directory is widely circulated and viewed by an average of 15 or more people. Mindy Stone Starting with this edition we have reorganized many resources that were formerly listed in individual categories into a state-by-state listing. Thus for instance, the former entries for Innocence Projects, Prison-Based College Programs, and Family & Visiting Resources are now listed in the Community corresponding state in which the organization is based or primarily offers its services. Our other categories Advisory Board with listings affecting prisoners on a nationwide basis will continue with their own sections, such as Women’s Organizations, Death Penalty Resources, and Religious Programs / Spiritual Resources. B♀ (rita d. brown) Rose Braz PARC also has been closely following the ongoing federal lawsuit over cruel and unusual conditions in California’s security housing units (Ashker v Brown, 4:09-cv-05796-CW), which was filed jointly Angela Davis by the nationally-recognized Center for Constitutional Rights, Oakland-based California Prison Focus, and San Francisco-based Legal Services for Prisoners with Children.

Vol.8, No.2. 2008 Academy of East Asian Studies. pp.163-177 On the Rooftop: A Study of Marginalized Youth Films in Hong Kong Cinema1 Xuelin ZHOU University of Auckland ABSTRACT Researchers of contemporary Hong Kong cinema have tended to concentrate on the monumental, metropolitan and/or historical works of such esteemed directors as Wong Kar-Wai, John Woo and Tsui Hark. This paper focuses instead on a number of low-budget films that circulated below the radar of Chinese as well as Western film scholars but were important to local young viewers, i.e. a cluster of films that feature deviant and marginalized youth as protagonists. They are very interesting as evidence of perceived social problems in contemporary Hong Kong. The paper aims to outline some main features of these marginalized youth films produced since the mid-1990s. Keywords: Hong Kong, cinema, youth culture, youth film, marginalized youth On the Rooftop A scene set on the rooftop of a skyscraper in central Hong Kong appears in New Police Story(2004), or Xin jingcha gushi, by the Hong Kong director Benny Chan, an action drama that features an aged local police officer struggling to fight a group of trouble-making, tech-savvy teenagers.2 The young people are using the rooftop for an “X-party,” an occasion for showing off their skills of skateboarding and cycling, by doing daredevil stunts along the edge of the building.

  • The Pen and the Pennon: Political and Social Comment
THE PEN AND THE PENNON: POLITICAL AND SOCIAL COMMENT INSCRIBED WITHIN CHIVALRIC ROMANCE A DISSERTATION IN English and History Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by LARRY MICHAEL MCCLOUD B.A., Iowa State University, 1997 MLA, Baker University, 1999 Kansas City, Missouri 2016 © 2016 LARRY MICHAEL MCCLOUD ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE PEN AND THE PENNON: POLITICAL AND SOCIAL COMMENT INSCRIBED WITHIN CHIVALRIC ROMANCE Larry Michael McCloud, Candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2016 ABSTRACT Study of the Medieval English romance has burgeoned in recent years, with a focus on the world outside of the texts being central to the resurgence. I offer in this dissertation a reading of four of these works (Athelston, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Cleges, and Sir Gowther) that considers each of them in the environment in which they are presented. Utilizing the contexts of manuscript placement, contemporary social and legal issues, and sociological changes affecting the audience, this work explores an analytical reading of each work that establishes possible meanings for each romance and possible motivations for their unnamed authors. Each work is ascribed its own chapter, focusing on a particular issue of English knighthood being interrogated. Chapter three suggests that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight repurposes the character of Gawain to observe the importance of oath taking and the bonds formed by knights from the practice of such. Chapter four focuses on the message of Athelston and argues that the work repositions the power of the crown beneath iii that of a regularized judicial system in which knights function as jurists.

  • Thematic Connections Between Western and Zombie Fiction
Hang 'Em High and Bury 'Em Deep: Thematic Connections between Western and Zombie Fiction MICHAEL NGUYEN Produced in Melissa Ringfield’s Spring 2012 ENC1102 Zombies first shambled onto the scene with the release of Night of the Living Dead, a low- budget Romero film about a group of people attempting to survive mysterious flesh-eating husks; from this archetypical work, Night ushered in an era of the zombie, which continues to expand into more mediums and works to this day. Romero's own Living Dead franchise saw a revival as recently as 2004, more than doubling its filmography by the release of 2009's Survival of the Dead. As a testament to the pervasiveness of the genre, Max Brooks' zombie preparedness satire The Zombie Survival Guide alone has spawned the graphic novel The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks and the spinoff novel World War Z, the latter of which has led to a film adaptation. There have been numerous articles that capitalize on the popularity of zombies in order to use them as a nuanced metaphor; for example, the graduate thesis Zombies at Work: The Undead Face of Organizational Subjectivity used the post-colonial Haitian zombie mythos as the backdrop of its sociological analysis of the workplace. However, few, if any, have attempted to define the zombie-fiction genre in terms of its own conceptual prototype: the Western. While most would prefer to interpret zombie fiction from its horror/supernatural fiction roots, I believe that by viewing zombie fiction through the analytical lens of the Western, zombie works can be more holistically described, such that a series like The Walking Dead might not only be described as a “show about zombies,” but also as a show that is distinctly American dealing with distinctly American cultural artifacts.
