Following that, he moved to San Francisco where he and his high-school friend Barry Lank formed the comedy team of Lank and Earl, debuting at the legendary Holy City Zoo. Over the next ten years they gained a reputation as ldquo;comicsrsquo; comicsrdquo; for their unique and offbeat humor, appeared in a variety of stage and television shows, and saved no money to speak of. After leaving The Daily Show, Jim went on to become a founding writer and performer for Air America Radio. His work there included writing for Al Franken, Rachel Maddow, Sam Seder, Janeane Garofalo and Randi Rhodes. SENE was created by producing director Don Farias and artistic director Phil Capobres, who work to create a welcoming atmosphere for festival entrants and attendees. And their efforts paid off — for four years in a row, SENE was named one of the Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee by MovieMaker Magazine, one of the most respected voices in the film industry, and was rated one of the best reviewed festivals by FilmFreeway. The festival made its COVID comeback over the summer. “We were thrilled that we were able to host fun events for visiting filmmakers in June,” said Farias. “It’s the first time in over a year that the world felt almost normal. The first project, Entertainment, Storytelling & Social Change in Global Poverty, an experimental design study that examined the persuasive impact of the comedic documentary film, Stand Up Planet, was published in February 2015; it was funded under the auspices of Learning for Action, LLC. Borum Chattoo was also the executive producer and producer of the documentary, which premiered in 2014 in the United States and India. Lauren Feldman, PhD, Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Information at Rut- gers University, served as peer reviewer for The Laughter Effect. For the Center for Media & Social Impact, graduate student fellows Jessica Henry Mariona, Diya Basu and Hannah Sedgwick provided research support; all were students at the American University School of Communication graduate Strategic Communication program.
