That is, with service better than Amtrak’s once-a-day offerings. Over the decades, ideas tumbled like houses built out of cards as circumstances, aided by critics, huffed and puffed chilling winds. But a smaller plan, to link San Antonio and Austin by intercity rail on tracks running through downtown New Braunfels, continues to breath. In fact, the old Austin-San Antonio Intermunicipal Rail District is still kicking up some dust. The seven- year-old district, authorized by a 13-year-old state law, recently shed its name and dumped its old web site in exchange for a punchy, fresh re-branding. The newly dubbed Lone Star Rail District’s revamping has received the Silver Spur Award for corporate identity by the Texas Public Relations Association. In January, Lone Star Rail District launched engineering and environmental impact studies for its planned passenger trains. These studies are required by federal law and represent the final planning stage for the project. The process is expected to span 24-36 months and will include studies on the LSTAR’s proposed 15 station locations and facilities. 10 NewBraunfelsMagazine.com One study will examine upgrading existing rail lines for passenger Covington said. service. NewBraunfelsMagazine.com 11 News on the LSTAR for New Braunfels By Rachel Danley Lone Star Rail District’s proposed stations for passenger rail service, stretching 120 miles through five counties, will be closely scrutinized by environmental impact studies. Identifying final station locations is a key element of the studies. Interestingly, the New Braunfels station site is one of the few sites that will have its location reconsidered, according to Alison Schulze, LSTAR’s administrator and senior planner. In the fall, public meetings will begin to determine if the previous location near Landa Park and the Comal County Courthouse will remain the proposed station stop. The other site being considered is the area around City Hall and the New Braunfels Civil Convention Center. Detailed environmental and engineering studies along with public input will determine the final station location. New Braunfels residents are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings and voice their opinions and concerns. Those unable to attend a workshop or hearing can also express their views online via email on the upcoming module of www.LoneStarRail.com. The module will be available in the near future and will include the dates and times of public meetings and hearings. All comments will be entered into the public record. 12 NewBraunfelsMagazine.com NewBraunfelsMagazine.com 13 14 NewBraunfelsMagazine.com NewBraunfelsMagazine.com 15 David Mills Custom Homes Building Trust and Success For David Mills Custom Homes, building immaculate custom Previous clients, Wayne and Anna Watson, were impressed by the houses and trust as a builder have contributed to its success.
