! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT Brian Fee [email protected] VOLTA9 JUNE 10-15, 2013 BASEL, SWITZERLAND (MAY 24, 2013). VOLTA is proud to announce special projects and presentations for the Basel fair's ninth edition, accenting the array of solo platforms, two-artist dialogues, and other eclectic positions from 74 international galleries. HilgerBROTKunsthalle (Vienna) unveils Advertising Tombstone Wall (no. 3, Tell Me Everything), Cameron Platter's carved Jacaranda wood monolith outside the front entrance of Dreispitzhalle. The engraved lettering of this weighty sculpture mimics cheaply made paper pamphlets advertising promises of healing, simultaneously foregrounding and satirizing societal values in his homeland KwaZulu- Natal. Platter is participating in the South African Pavilion at this year's Venice Biennale. Targeting South African economics, first-time VOLTA exhibitor SMAC Art Gallery (Stellenbosch/Cape Town) selected their solo artist Ed Young to design a bold, text-based mural MY OTHER RIDE IS YOUR MOM for the fair entryway. The irreverent slogan recalls bumper stickers adorning government Hummers and private recreational vehicles in South Africa, a sense of fiscal pride for certain citizens, and accents Hamish Fulton: EXILED, POTALA: WALKING ONE CIRCUIT OF THE POTALA KORA, LHASA TIBET Young's works in SMAC's booth. 27 SEPTEMBER 2007, 2013, 42 x 59.4 cm, Edition of 25 Galleries exhibiting multiple artists provide coherence and thought-provoking combinations in their curated booth concepts. Galerie Dukan (Paris) highlights the aesthetic grotesque across a range of media, featuring Folkert de Jong, Bayrol Jiménez, John Kleckner, Alicia Paz, Richard Stipl, and Alexander Tinei; while balzerARTprojects (Basel) gathers the trio investigating the dichotomy between reality and fiction in architecture: Andreas Bauer, Nici Jost, and Nicolas Kerksieck; an exploration of transformative properties of sculpture and paper underline Galerie Martin Kudlek's (Cologne) artists Jonathan Callan, Angela Glajcar, Alexander Gorlizki, and Sofie Muller; a theme of "the uncanny" is embraced by CHARLIE SMITH london's (London) mostly British cast – Tom Butler, Wendy Mayer, Alexis Milne, John Stark, and Gavin Tremlett – and accented by French artist Eric Manigaud's harrowing graphite scenes; and frosch&portmann (New York) presents a trio ! remixing and reinterpreting commercial feminine imagery: Julia Kuhl, Eva Lake, and Hooper Turner. Plus, recalling their ambitious booth concept last year, V1 Gallery (Copenhagen) plans to split their visually dynamic octet – Katherine Bernhardt, John Copeland, Jacob Holdt, Todd James, Wes Lang, Anika Lori, Geoff McFetridge, and HuskMitNavn – into several unique hangings over the course of the fair. Literally around the corner from VOLTA9 on Oslostrasse is a corridor of creative spaces: OSLO8 hosts a solo exhibition for Czech photographer Jiří Makovec; British artist duo Semiconductor stage emotive video works and installations at Haus für elektronische Künste, their debut solo show in Switzerland; and the talented young artists of international exchange program iaab participate in Going Places 4: Journey to Elsewhere, guest curated by Monika Kästli, with a special reception until 8 pm on Wednesday, June 12. Plus, the nearby Schaulager, Münchenstein/Basel's open-warehouse contemporary art museum, hosts extended hours through Art Basel Week for British video artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen's expansive mid-career survey. VOLTA9 at Dreispitzhalle is connected by direct, complimentary shuttles running to and from Art Basel and LISTE, for effortless transit between fairs.
