FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT Brian Fee [email protected] VOLTA10 Basel June 16-21, 2014 BASEL, JUNE 23, 2014: VOLTA10 set the gold standard in the 2014 Basel art week, formulating an ideal ratio of emerging and established artistic talent and presenting the 70- gallery array within a renowned local landmark. Markthalle's central location created a noticeable bump in visitor numbers, as guests passed under the soaring cupola dome, engaging with the art on view and discovering compelling – and covetable – creative output beyond the usual art-world trends. "The three rules of a successful business have always been: location, location, location... and this year proved it for us," said VOLTA Artistic Director Amanda Coulson. "With the confirmation of the return to Markthalle, coinciding with our tenth year, we secured the return of key anchor galleries, and with such a strong foundation, we were able to construct a better fair, one that was easy to reach and therefore a must-see for most of the major collectors at Art Basel Week." Private collectors and public institutions alike were attracted to VOLTA10's plethora of cogent projects. Patrick Mikhail Gallery (Ottawa) took a bold move by enveloping their booth in the immersive mixed-media project Animate Grounds by young Brooklyn- and Quebec-based artist Amy Schissel, a year's worth of output distilled into a wildly abstract wall work, plus related abstract paintings and digital media. Beyond sales of the more portable works, the gallery generated green-lights toward two major commissions, one for the Warsaw branch of a Washington architecture firm, and the other to a Toronto bank, for a combined total of over $130,000.

ALEXANDER TINEI SOWN BY THE ROADSIDE SOWN BY THE ROADSIDE Alexander Tinei wurde 1967 in Moldawien geboren, und lebt und arbeitet bereits seit vielen Jahren in Budapest. Sein großräumiges Atelier ermög- licht ihm eine Arbeitsweise in sehr großen Formaten, wobei er stets an mehreren Bildern in unterschiedlichen Größen parallel arbeitet. So ent- stehen Serien, welche thematisch zusammengefasst werden können. Die Galleria Doris Ghetta freut sich außerordentlich, diesem großartigen Maler eine Einzelausstellung in ihren Räumen in Pontives zu widmen. Alexander Tinei realisiert eigens für diese Ausstellung einen komplett neuen Werk- zyklus, welcher eine fundamentale Weiterentwicklung zu seinen vorher- gehenden Arbeiten darstellt, und doch auf diese inhaltlich und technisch verweist. Viele der Arbeiten dieser neuen Serie betiteln sich mit „measuring the roots“. Die dargestellten Personen halten einen Meterstab in der Hand, Wurzeln bestimmen den Bildhintergrund, und definieren den Raum, der die Figuren umgibt. Im Gegensatz zu seinen früheren Arbeiten, in denen sich diese Wurzeln wie sichtbare Venen durch die Körper der Protagonis- ten ziehen, haben sie sich hier nun aus den Körpern befreit, und werden zum raumbestimmenden Element. Auf einer symbolischen Ebene verwei- sen sie, zusammen mit dem Meterstab, auf die Suche des Künstlers nach seiner eigenen Identität und nach seinen kulturellen Wurzeln. Darüber hi- naus steht dieser neue Werkzyklus aber auch für eine Beschäftigung mit den Traditionen und Möglichkeiten des Mediums der Malerei an sich. Die Arbeiten beinhalten wichtige Elemente, welche das Medium der Male- rei betreffen, wie z.B. die Recherche rund um das Thema Portrait, aber auch ein neuer Umgang mit Farbe, Struktur und Oberfläche. Das Portrait ist Al- exander Tinei’s große Leidenschaft und eines der Hauptthemen in seinen Werken.

When Darkness Falls and Famines
and Eastern Europe. Materialism replaced morality and little hope was left for the individual. It is not surprising that the work in this show is dark and depressing. The word Nightfall , the title of the MODEM show, suggests threatening shadows, foreboding, and anxiety about the end of an era and an uncertain future. The original idea came from Isaac Asimov’s 1941 science fiction short story of the same name about the coming of darkness to a planet ordinarily illuminated at all times on all sides. As the catalog’s foreword states, quoting William Orville Douglas, “As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there’s a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged, and it is in such twilight that we must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.” Most of the exhibiting artists were born during the Cold War, so being alert to lurking political, ideological or even physical danger is second nature to them. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the euphoric feelings of freedom that followed made the 1990’s a big, happy party in Europe. AMA NEWSLETTER 504 May 2012 Munch’s The Scream knocks Picasso of the top spot ! The sale of the Edvard Munch’s masterpiece The Scream at Sotheby’s did not disappoint Top stories the art market. The sale, which took place on Tuesday 2 May in New York, saw The Scream Page 2 become the most expensive piece ever to be sold at auction. At $119.92 million, it pushed Pablo Picasso’s Nu au plateau de sculpteur (Nude, Green Leaves and Bust), which Data sold for $106.48 million on 4 May 2010 at Christie’s New York, into second place. Valued at $80 million, the auction was dominated by seven major collectors and Tàpies allowed, in the space of twelve incredibly intense minutes, the pastel version of the Page 4 Scream to break a world record. The session opened with a battle between bidders both in the room and on the telephone, eventually climaxing in a fierce contest Museums between two buyers; one represented by Charles Moffet, the other by Stephane Page 6 Cosman. The identity of the winner, however, who submitted the final bid by phone, has not been revealed by the auction house. For immediate release May 12th, 2009 VOLTA5 publishes exhibitor list and latest news VOLTA, Basel's acclaimed venue for contemporary and emerging art, will once again be bringing together a unique selection of international galleries for Basel’s Art Week. The fair, which is celebrating its 5th edition, will be taking up residence in a the impressive new location at the historic Markthalle, located just a few steps away from SBB, Basel's main railway station. VOLTA5 received more than 350 applications from which the Curatorial Board -- composed of Adam Budak, curator of Kunsthaus Graz and co-curator of Manifesta 7; Christoph Doswald, art critic and curator, Zurich; Tom Morton, curator, The Hayward, London and co-curator 2008 Busan Biennale; Jasper Sharp, curator and writer, Vienna; and Stephanie Smith, curator at Smart Museum of Art, Chicago -- have selected galleries from 29 countries to participate. The complete exhibitor list can be found at the end of this release. The Curatorial Board also selected this year’s limited edition artist, New York-based, Lithuanian sculptor Zilvinas Kempinas, whose unique installations often use un-spooled videotape and the wind from electric fans to conjure transfixing visual conundrums. The VOLTA5 edition, Light Formation (2009, ed. 20) rather uses light as the formative medium for his visual play. With an ever-growing international reputation, recipient of the Calder Prize and Atelier Calder Residency Award 2007, Kempinas represents the Lithuanian Pavilion at this year’s 53rd Venice Biennale and is represented by Spencer Brownstone Gallery.
