For the first time this season, UW received a vote in the USA Today/ * - Big 12 Conference dual NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Brown and Gold jumped to 20th in the FloWrestling team rankings last week and the Pokes are currently 21st and 23rd in the Open Mat and Trackwrestling team rankings, respectively. Individually, Wyoming once again has four wrestlers ranked. Senior Bryce Meredith will more than likely lead a number of Pokes that will move up in the individual rankings. Meredith earned his fifth-straight win over a ranked opponent. He is fourth at 141 pounds 2017-18 Big 12 in the FloWrestling, InterMat, The Open Mat and Trackwrestling rankings. Senior Archie Colgan is 16th in The Open Mat rankings at 157 pounds and 17th in both the FloWrestling School Conference Overall and InterMat individual rankings. Junior Branson Ashworth remained at 15th in both the Air Force 1-0 1-1 FloWrestling and InterMat rankings, and is also 16th in Trackwrestling’s rankings. After Fresno State 0-1 1-5 picking up an upset win a week ago and joining Ashworth and Meredith with titles in Iowa State 0-1 0-3 Reno, redshirt freshman Montorie Bridges is currently 20th in the FloWrestling and The North Dakota St. 0-2 1-3 Open Mat’s 133 pound rankings. Northern Colorado 0-0 0-1 Last Year v. Oklahoma State #15 Northern Iowa 1-0 1-1 Against Oklahoma State a year ago, Colgan was the lone Cowboy to get the Pokes on the #21 Oklahoma 0-0 1-2 board with an overtime victory over Davey Dolan. Tied at one heading to overtime, Col- #3 Oklahoma State 1-0 3-0 gan scored the takedown for the 3-1 decision. Wyoming fell 32-3 in Stillwater. #17 South Dakota St. 0-0 4-2 Utah Valley 1-0 4-2 Closing in on 100 West Virginia 0-1 1-2 Colgan currently has 96 career wins while wearing the Brown and Gold. Oklahoma State Connections Both head coach Mark Branch and associate head coach Ethan Kyle wrestled for Oklahoma State in their collegiate days. Branch was a two-time NCAA Champion and four-time NCAA finalist from 1994-97. After exhausting eligibility, Branch was the associate head coach for six years, helping the team to titles in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Kyle wrestled at Oklahoma State from 2003-07. He was a member of four national championship teams from 2003-06 and was a team captain in 2007 as a senior. And it ended in dramatic fashion. In the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships’ final match after three days of grueling competition inside a legendary arena, Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder used an ankle-pick with eight seconds left to force overtime with North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, then score another takedown 15 seconds into the first extra session to end the Wolfpack senior’s 88-match winning streak. Gwiazdowski’s bid for a third title was thwarted, but another senior, Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer, finished his career with 82 straight victories and a third national title. Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez won his second championship at 157 pounds. Gabe Dean, a junior for Cornell, picked up his second gold. Missouri’s multi-talented J’den Cox claimed his second in three years. Penn State’s Nico Megaludis and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett, after long and successful careers, finished in style with their first titles. Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil and Penn State’s Zain Retherford, both sophomores, claimed championship number one, as did Snyder. Ohio State’s Myles Martin, a champion in 2016 with a win over Penn State’s Bo Nickal, a freshman at the time, fired a powerful double-leg shot late in the first period of the 184-pound national championship match. Nickal (31-0), a national champion in 2017, flipped Martin to his back with a high-flyer and, with 31 seconds left, scored a monumental pin. The pin put the Nittany Lions up by 12½ points and wrapped up a seventh NCAA team title in eight years. Penn State totaled 141½ points to Ohio State’s 134½ points. Three of Nickal’s teammates – Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf, and Vincenzo Joseph — also won individual honors and three others finished among the top eight. Retherford finished his career with 94-straight wins and a third national title, beating Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry, 6-2, in the 149-pound final. The first of five Penn State finalists, Retherford’s win cut the Buckeye deficit to two points. A match later, junior Nolf (26-1) cruised by North Carolina State’s Hayden Hidlay and the Nittany Lions regained the lead over their Big Ten brethren 132½ to 130½. The women would continue their medal run on the second day of CODY BRYANT competition when Alli Ragan won the silver medal after losing to Risako Kawai (Japan) Administrative Assistants 13-0. This would help the women’s freestyle team place second behind the Japanese who LANANN BRYANT finished with four gold medals.     DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2017 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2017 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State wins sixth title in seven years: The Penn State wrestling team left no doubt to its dominance, rolling to a perfect 5-0 record in the 2017 NCAA Championships finals. The stunning run capped off Penn State’s team title performance in St. Louis’ Scottrade Center. Penn State, under the guidance of head coach Cael Sanderson, claimed its sixth NCAA team title in the last seven years, its second straight and its seventh overall. Penn State also tied the NCAA record with five individual national champions becoming the fourth team in NCAA history and the first since Oklahoma State in 2005. The Nittany Lions won the title with a school record 146.5 points, 36.5 points ahead of second place Ohio State. Oklahoma State was third with 103.0. Penn State’s seven team titles are fourth all-time in NCAA history. Sanderson now has six NCAA team titles as a head coach, tied for fifth all-time. Junior Zain Retherford, the No. 1 seed at 149 pounds, took on No. 3 Lavion Mayes of Missouri in the first of five straight NCAA finals match-ups featuring Penn State wrestlers to close out the championships. Mayes fought off a quick early shot by Retherford and then took a 2-0 lead with a fast double leg at the 2:33 mark. Retherford quickly escaped to a 2-1 score and took the lead with a low single to a takedown at the 1:40 mark.
