5 9 11 CLA hosts multi-sectoral meeting on solid waste management The College of Liberal Arts under Dean Dr. Exaltacion Lamberte hosted a meeting by members of a multi-sectoral group involved in a community-based solid waste management project in Sta. Rosa, Laguna last March 5 at the Br. Connon Conference Room. The project, locally known as “Basura’y Sinupin Para sa Gawain” (Recover waste for the ministry), was spearheaded by Marlon de Luna Era, faculty member of the Behavioral Sciences Department (BSD) and president of the GenTwoFifteen Development Foundation Inc., an environmental NGO in Santa Rosa. Implemented almost two years ago, the project has since enabled more than 200 families to practice waste segregation, as required by Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. Era said the project involves the establishment of a knowledge hub and redemption center for clean recyclables. The Ecological Waste Management Information and Demonstration Center is currently being completed to provide such services. Attending the meeting were representatives of the Canadian International Development Agency and Asian Institute of Technology (CIDA-AIT), the city government of Santa Rosa, local churches, homeowners association, Polytechnic University of the , and Toyota Auto Parts. Through the project, Santa Rosa is now busy with a number of solid waste management initiatives. Toyota Auto Parts has established a partnership with DLSU through the BSD for the funding of two graduate student theses on solid waste management in the place. The heroic legacy of 16 La Salle Brothers By Br. Rolando Dizon FSC

This speech was delivered by former DLSU President Br. Rolando Dizon FSC last February 12 at the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel on the occasion of the commemoration of the massacre of 16 La Salle Brothers during World War II.Br. Roly continues to teach at the Theology and Religious Studies Department.

Today we are gathered here to commemorate the massacre of the 16 La Salle Brothers in this chapel and to reflect on the significance of their heroic legacy for us today. The question that continues to perplex historians is WHY, and why did the Brothers remain on campus, despite the grave danger which they must have known was upon them? They had been warned repeatedly and advised to leave while there was still time, but they decided to stay. Why? There are two plausible answers: first, they may have felt they were safe because many of them were Germans, and therefore their Japanese allies would not harm them; second, they chose to risk their lives because they believed it was their duty to protect the campus from heavy damage. I would like to believe that there was a third reason, the most important one. I believe the Brothers were heeding the injunction that their Founder St. La Salle gave them: “You should so love the children confided to your care that you are ready to lay down your lives for them.” Their love for their students was the reason they left their homes in order to educate Filipino youth to be good Christians and good citizens. That same love may have caused them their lives. My fellow Lasallians, let us honor the memory and the sacrifice of these Brothers by keeping alive in our hearts The heroic legacy of 16 La Salle Brothers

and in our minds the Lasallian spirit of a faith that leads us to serve the youth and the poor. Not yesterday, but today! The evil that surrounds us is not perpetrated by a foreign aggressor, but it is no less sinister. The evil is embodied in what Scott Peck calls the “People of the Lie.” They are leaders whose lust for power and wealth have led to shameful injustice and corruption, thereby causing massive poverty and unprecedented hunger for millions of . The global financial crises exacerbate our plight, and the social cancer of cynicism and despair is killing our soul! Amidst this gloom, we Lasallians are called to be People of the Truth who must heed the call for change and lead the movement for a national transformation. For the sake of our youth and our students, we must risk all and follow the road less traveled—the prophetic road. We must speak the truth, and do what is right and just, no matter the cost. As Christian educators, we must refuse to compromise with the People of the Lie, and instead align ourselves with the Jun Lozadas who sacrifice comfort and wealth for truth and integrity. The educational witness we give to our students must be clear, unequivocal, and uncompromising: we will not dance or sleep with the People of the Lie! The personal and institutional cost will be very high, but in my heart, I really believe that the Lasallian spirit— that same spirit that led to the massacre of our 16 Brothers here in 1945—will empower us to overcome the forces of evil, and please God, we may yet see in our lifetime a country free from injustice and poverty, and a people who can stand proud in the family of nations! Mga Lasalyano, bumangon tayo, magsalita ng totoo, huwag matakot, makibaka! May Jesus live in our hearts, forever, and may we do all our actions for the love of Him.
