Teacher Transition in the Insight Meditation Movement Introduction In the next ten years, nearly all of the founding and senior teachers in the Insight movement will reduce or stop their teaching, and possibly some will die. We have just begun an important time of transition, worthy of reflection and considered action. Buddhism in the West is very young. We are still learning what it is by our very acts of practicing and teaching it. We still have much to learn from the particular sufferings and challenges of our modern life, from the ancient texts, and from each other. The seed has sprouted, and it needs nourishment. In some ways, there is nothing new happening here. Spiritual movements have been evolving beyond their founders for millennia, with a wide range of results. Buddhism itself has moved into new regions many times, as well as adapted to sweeping changes in a given region over time. We are fortunate to live in a time when there is access to such historical knowledge, as well as frameworks and tools from more modern disciplines. Nonetheless, this is the present place and time. We must act within our particular circumstances, with the people who are present, and with the resources at hand. Although our case is not special, it is, like all cases, unique. The Insight Meditation Movement in the West does not have a sharp definition, but neither is it vague or undefined. It was started by Westerners who trained at Theravada monasteries in Southeast Asia – these founding teachers include Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, Christina Feldman, Christopher Titmuss, and Ruth Denison. -

I realise that many of you have travelled a long way to get here, and suspect most of us – like myself – have had a busy week as well. We are all likely to be tired. The mad rush of tying up the loose ends of our lives before setting off for a week of quiet, solitary reflection can be exhausting. We’ll keep this opening session short and to the point so everyone can have a good night’s sleep. Martine and I have been leading these retreats once a year since we returned from Songgwang Sa monastery in Korea to Dev- on in 1985, which would make this retreat the thirtieth – well, actually, the twenty-ninth, since one year we offered this slot to the Chinese Chan master Sheng-yen1. 1 What is this? Ancient questions for modern minds First and foremost, this is a retreat: a time of conscious withdrawal from the routines and duties of our everyday existence in order to reflect on what really matters for us. We step back into the solitude and silence offered by Gaia House in order to take stock of ourselves. I imagine many of you will have arrived here with questions or issues that are concerning you. These might have to do with your career, your marriage, your children, or with more personal psychological or spiritual matters. -

OCR qualifications include AS/A Levels, Diplomas, GCSEs, Cambridge Nationals, Cambridge Technicals, Functional Skills, Key Skills, Entry Level qualifications, NVQs and vocational qualifications in areas such as IT, business, languages, teaching/training, administration and secretarial skills. An Analysis of the Vānarinda Jātaka
THE PROMISE OF INTERPRETATION: AN ANALYSIS OF THE VĀNARINDA JĀTAKA by VISHMA KUNU (Under the Direction of Glenn Wallis) ABSTRACT My contention is that the Vānarinda Jātaka (VJ) is a specifically Buddhist narrative, being a strategic reworking of situations and characters common to Indian oral tradition. By way of a fluid, triple-layered construct that is experimental in nature, I support this claim by exploring the interpretive possibilities of the text. Chapter one functions as a philological groundwork, and is a translation of the Pāli text that highlights terminology with distinctive resonances in the Buddhist tradition. The second chapter reveals the ways in which the VJ is marked by generality, drawing out pan-Indian elements through an examination against excerpts from the Pañcatantra, considered nīti literature, and the Sundarakāa in Vālmīki’s Rāmāyaa, a Hindu work, all having pre-literate roots. In the third chapter, I offer a creative explication of the VJ, bringing to light the abundance of Buddhist allusions, and doctrinal references embedded within the narrative. Astin California Pacific Medical Center Supplemental research and editing: Maia Duerr, Five Directions Consulting October 2008 2 Abstract There is growing interest in the integration of meditation into higher education (Bush, 2006). This paper reviews empirical evidence related to the use of meditation to facilitate the achievement of traditional educational goals, to help support student mental health under academic stress, and to enhance education of the “whole person.” Drawing on four decades of research conducted with two primary forms of meditation, we demonstrate how these practices may help to foster important cognitive skills of attention and information processing, as well as help to build stress resilience and adaptive interpersonal capacities. This paper also offers directions for future research, highlighting the importance of theory-based investigations, increased methodological rigor, expansion of the scope of education-related outcomes studied, and the study of best practices for teaching meditation in educational settings. 3 Meditation and Higher Education: Key Research Findings Cognitive and Academic Performance • Mindfulness meditation may improve ability to maintain preparedness and orient attention. • Mindfulness meditation may improve ability to process information quickly and accurately. • Concentration-based meditation, practiced over a long-term, may have a positive impact on academic achievement. His talent at capturing the mood of the gray winter months has made his work widely respected and popular. His photograph Oak Tree, Snowstorm printed on the title page of this thesis is an example of his work. Some people may look at the photo and be awed by the beauty and splendor of the gray shadows and snow. However, others may have a very different reaction. They may look at the photo and be reminded of the nightmare of depression, fatigue, lethargy, and hopelessness they feel each year during the winter months. These people may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder and the intent of this thesis is to explore how yoga can help them. What is Seasonal Affective Disorder? Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of major depression that corresponds to seasonal changes during the year. People with SAD generally experience recurring depression beginning in late fall or early winter, which alternates with periods of a high or normal mood during the rest of the year. SAD is linked to the changing levels of light during the year. SAD is described as an “energy crisis” in which many physical and mental functions of the body are affected. Typical characteristics of SAD are: oversleeping or disturbed sleep, daytime fatigue, increased cravings for carbohydrates, weight gain, difficulty concentrating and processing information. -

The Tulku System in Tibetan Buddhism: Its Reliability, Orthodoxy and Social Impacts By Ramin Etesami A thesis submitted to the graduate school in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the International Buddhist College, Thailand March, 20 Abstract The Tulku institution is a unique characteristic of Tibetan Buddhism with a central role in this tradition, to the extent that it is present in almost every aspect of Tibet’s culture and tradition. However, despite this central role and the scope and diversity of the socio-religious aspects of the institution, only a few studies have so far been conducted to shed light on it. On the other hand, an aura of sacredness; distorted pictures projected by the media and film industries;political propaganda and misinformation; and tendencies to follow a pattern of cult behavior; have made the Tulku institution a highly controversial topic for research; and consequently, an objective study of the institution based on a critical approach is difficult. The current research is an attempt to comprehensively examine different dimensions of the Tulku tradition with an emphasis on the issue of its orthodoxy with respect to the core doctrines of Buddhism and the social implications of the practice. In this research, extreme caution has been practiced to firstly, avoid any kind of bias rooted in faith and belief; and secondly, to follow a scientific methodology in reviewing evidence and scriptures related to the research topic. Through a comprehensive study of historical accounts, core Buddhist texts and hagiographic literature, this study has found that while the basic Buddhist doctrines allow the possibility for a Buddhist teacher or an advanced practitioner to “return back to accomplish his tasks, the lack of any historical precedence which can be viewed as a typical example of the practice in early Buddhism makes the issue of its orthodoxy equivocal and relative.
