How does one skip rope, work the pads, or avoid nipple rash? If you think that boxing would be a fun way to get fit, this would probably be a useful book for you. The reader will gain insight into bagwork, padwork, and boxing drills--from beginner to advanced. However, it does offer useful tips in a concise form. The same is true of safety tips. I liked the approach of this book. While it shows one the age-old practices of fighters, it also describes more recent developments. Graphics include black and white photographs throughout a few diagrams. Most chapters have photographs, and they are generally sufficient to convey the necessary information without being overwhelming. While this is a book of the basics, I found it to be a beneficial read and I appreciated the way it was arranged and the way information was conveyed. Jul 09, Sparklybright rated it liked it. Good circuit ideas for workouts at home. Not very informative on the technical elements though. Too basic on the techniques. Oct 27, Tomson Titus rated it liked it. Respect and special thanks go out to Bob Breen, Terry Barnett, Gordon McAdam and Alex Turnbull, from all of whose motivational classes I borrowed so heavily, and still continue to do so. A word of warning It almost goes without saying that a book on boxing training will involve some vigorous and demanding physical effort. If you have any concerns about your health then I must stress the importance of getting clearance from your doctor If you Boxing Fitness: A Guide to Get Fighting Fit not participated in any training before, or not for some time, then start gradually, always taking the easier options and limiting the training times. You should, and my fervent hope is that you will, enjoy your exercise. Never forget that you have the rest of your life to get fit. IV Note from Terry Barnett A practical book on boxing fitness is long overdue in the martial arts world and Ian Oliver is eminently qualified to produce such a guide. Those of us who have been lucky enough to train under Ian have marvelled at his wealth of knowledge and his ability to express and share his experiences. He has the ability to make the complex seem simple and is constantly adding to his seemingly endless repertoire of drills. Those reading this book who know Ian will not be surprised at the quality of what is to follow. Those who have never met him should prepare themselves for a wonderful journey of discovery. This is a must have for every martial arts book collection. Here theory and practice fight it out on a nightly basis. Part poetry of movement, part brutality, the lure of boxing to modern man is very strong. Here one can test oneself in ritual conflict, and for many even light sparring can be a rite of passage. The training is wholesome and complete, building lean bodies and, most often, minds devoid of aggression and fear. I find it incredible that some sort of boxing, perhaps of a less destructive nature, isn't part of the sports curriculum in all schools.

FACSIMILE REPRODUCTION NOTES: This document is an attempt at a faithful transcription of the original document. Special effort has been made to ensure that original spelling (this includes what may be typographical errors such as the 1776 reference on pp29 which should, apparently, be 1766 or pp39 where June 10 appears twice and should, at a guess, be July 10 in the second appearance, and, my favorite, July 40, on pp46), line-breaks, and vocabulary are left intact, and when possible, similar fonts have been used. However, it contains original formatting and image scans. All rights are reserved except those specifically granted herein. Of particular note in this reproduction is the unusual (by today’s standards) selection of page and font size. The page size is, in the original 6” x 10” with a font approximately 9 point for large portions of the book. Reproducing it in 6x9 with smaller top and bottom margins with hand tweaked font, paragraph, and line spacings, I have tried to recaptured the original personality of the book. However, this can make it difficult to read. Be assured that this was maintained in order to keep the “flavor” of the original text but it can be taxing on the eyes. • HUNKERING DOWN Seido Shibus Weekly E-Zine SEIDO SHIBUS WEEKLY E-ZINE - THEIR HISTORY, OUR LEGACY
HUNKERING DOWN seido shibus weekly e-zine SEIDO SHIBUS WEEKLY E-ZINE - THEIR HISTORY, OUR LEGACY “To know yourself as the Being underneath the thinker, the stillness underneath the mental noise, the love and joy underneath the pain, is freedom, salvation, enlightenment.”— Eckhart Tolle Within a historical context, we could liken Seido Karate to an iceberg. What we see on a ‘day to day basis’ is a reflection of the depths of Seido Karate Do. Our senior karateka are our taonga. They provide the depth to our Dojos. Take away this depth and the iceberg melts and disappears in a moment. This edition [no. 5] is a tribute to our senior Seido karateka. To use a tangata whenua analogy, our seniors are our knowledge holders, our ‘values’ protectors, and their collective experiences, wisdom and legacies are that which Seido Karate Do relies most heavily upon. Seido Karate Do practice is, by its very nature challenging, in order to build our mental and physical strength. This mental and physical strength is tested in promotions. Eleanor Roosevelt said “a woman is like a tea bag. You can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” I would argue that both men and women can be likened to tea bags within the karate context. Promotions are ‘hot water’ for us all. Specialised armed forces have used this ‘tea bag’ principle to guide selection processes for eons - putting men and women under physical and mental pressure to check their ‘net worth’ before they invest significant resources into worthy candidates.

Italia.
