Course Goals Students will become familiar with historical and contemporary East Asian religious traditions, apply that knowledge in order to interpret the meaning of key texts in those traditions, and relate what they have learned to current issues. Course Assessment *Students will require content from both the required readings and the course lectures in order to do well in this course. a) Textbook Reading Responses (10%) There are three textbook reading responses in total. For each one, choose one of the two possible questions in the course schedule, and write a thoughtful and detailed response of about 250 words. *submit via CULearn by 12 p.m. noon on July 8, 22, and August 3. b) Group Presentations (10%) Present your collective interpretation of a selected passage from the assigned primary source reading to the class. Passages and groups are accessible via CULearn. *each student presents in one group, one time, and presentations will take place in class between July 13 and August 10. c) Unit 1 Test (20%) Three parts: i) answer multiple choice questions about Chinese history, ii) give definitions of key terms for understanding Chinese religions, and iii) analyze passages from Confucius’ Analects and Zhuangzi’s Basic Writings. -

Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby Tawhid is achieved. All Muslims believe in Unity as expressed in the most Universal sense possible by the Shahadah, la ilaha ill’Allah. The Sufi has realized the mysteries of Tawhid, who knows what this assertion means. It is only he who sees God everywhere.1 Sufism can also be explained from the perspective of the three basic religious attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an. These are the attitudes of Islam, Iman and Ihsan.There is a Hadith of the Prophet (saw) which describes the three attitudes separately as components of Din (religion), while several other traditions in the Kitab-ul-Iman of Sahih Bukhari discuss Islam and Iman as distinct attitudes varying in religious significance. These are also mentioned as having various degrees of intensity and varieties in themselves. The attitude of Islam, which has given its name to the Islamic religion, means Submission to the Will of Allah. This is the minimum qualification for being a Muslim. Technically, it implies an acceptance, even if only formal, of the teachings contained in the Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet (saw). Iman is a more advanced stage in the field of religion than Islam. It designates a further penetration into the heart of religion and a firm faith in its teachings. -

Charles Muller on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 My Life in Buddhist Studies James Mark Shields Professor of Comparative Humanities and Asian Thought Inaugural Director, Bucknell Humanities Center Bucknell University First, I’d like to thank Chuck Prebish for the opportunity to contribute to this interesting and valuable project. Second, I am sure that my version of this story is considerably less engaging than those of my peers—especially those who came of age in the generation before mine; i.e., in the 1960s and 1970s. With that caveat (always good to lower expectations!), let’s begin. Family Connections It was in the early 1980s that, as a late adolescent, my curiosity was first piqued by Asian cultures and civilizations. The primary causal force was very close to home: my mother. For it was at this time, roughly the age of 12, that it began to dawn on me that my mother—a seemingly ordinary middle-aged and middle-class Canadian woman—was in fact the product of a somewhat more exotic, even tragic, upbringing. Born in Manila, the Philippines in 1937, of Scots, Spanish, and a tiny sliver of native Filipino heritage, she found herself at the tender age of 4 rounded up by an invading Japanese military force and placed in an internment camp on the grounds of Santo Tomas University in Manila, where she and her family were forced to reside for the next 3 years. Needless to say, these were difficult times, and though my mother’s memories are vague, she does recall a clear distinction between the ‘nice’ and ‘nasty’ Japanese guards, as well as the decreasing supplies of food as the war wore on and Japan went from aggressor to defender of the islands. -

Mysticism and Greek Monasticism By JOHANNES RINNE There is reason to assert that Christian mysticism is as old as Christianity itself. In the Pauline epistles, e.g., there are obvious signs of this fact. The later Christian mysticism has, in a high degree, been inspired by these ele- ments and likewise by various corresponding thoughts in the Johannine writings, which traditionally are interpreted from this angle and which have played a central role especially for the Orthodox Church.' In the light of the above-mentioned circumstances, it seems fully natural that there exists, from the very beginning, a clear connection also between mysticism and Christian monasticism. It has been pointed out by certain authors that the role of mystical visions is of essential and decisive significance also as regards the development from the stage of the hermits of the deserts to that form of life which, in the proper sense of the word, is characterised as monastic. There is, generally speaking, no possibility to understand correctly the intentions and the thoughts of the great pioneers of monasticism, unless one takes into account the mystically visionary factors. To this end it is neces- sary, furthermore, to penetrate in an inner, spiritual way, into the holy sym- bolism of the monastic tradition and into the sacred legends of its history.2 In other words, it is necessary to keep constantly in mind the visionary factor and to remember that the pioneers of monastic life, as a rule, are men of which it may be said that they have their conversation in heaven: on the mystical level of vision they converse with the angels as the representatives of the heavenly world and as those organs, by means of which the principles of monastic life are transmitted and given to the men of mystical visions.' Women in church and society Report of research done by a research team at the PU vir CHO Fika J. van Rensburg School of Biblical Studies and Bible Languages Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir CHO POTCHEFSTROOM Email: [email protected] Abstract Women in church and society: Report of research done by a research team at the PU vir CHO The research project “Women in Church and Society” was con- ducted under the auspices of one of the focus areas for research and postgraduate education at the Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys: “Reformed Theology and the Develop- ment of the South African Society”. This focus area is based in the Faculty of Theology (PU vir CHO) and is directed by Herrie van Rooy. Project 2 of this focus area is “The socio-historic context of the Bible and its implications for the development of South African Society” and is under the leadership of Fika J. van Rensburg. The first sub-project of Project 2 to be completed is “Women in Church and Society”. It commenced in 2000 and had its fourth and final workshop in September 2002. It was managed by a five-person executive committee and had the following categories of collabo- rators: 16 PU vir CHO researchers, 10 researchers from other South African universities, 6 international researchers, 19 masters’ and doctoral students, and 21 researchers with special expertise in relevant areas. In total 48 papers1 were read and discussed at the four workshops; and most of them have either been published or are in the process of being published as articles in accredited journals. -

Kenyon College Course Catalog 2019-20 Requirements: Religious Studies Humanities Division We understand the study of religion as a crucial element in the larger study of culture and history. We consider the study of religion to be inherently interdisciplinary and a necessary component for intercultural literacy and, as such, essential to the liberal arts curriculum. Our goals include helping students to recognize and examine the important role of religion in history and the contemporary world; to explore the wide variety of religious thought and practice, past and present; to develop methods for the academic study of particular religions and religion in comparative perspective; and to develop the necessary skills to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the nature and role of religion. Since the phenomena that we collectively call "religion" are so varied, it is appropriate that they be studied from a variety of theoretical perspectives and with a variety of methods. The diversity of areas of specialization and approaches to the study of religion among our faculty members ensures the representation of many viewpoints. Our courses investigate the place of religion in various cultures in light of social, political, economic, philosophical, psychological and artistic questions. We encourage religious studies majors to take relevant courses in other departments. The Department of Religious Studies maintains close relationships with interdisciplinary programs such as Asian and Middle East studies, American studies, African diaspora studies, international studies, and women's and gender studies. Our courses require no commitment to a particular faith. However, students of any background, secular or religious, can benefit from the personal questions of meaning and purpose that arise in every area of the subject. -

Athens Journal of History - Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 235-250 The Ancient History and the Female Christian Monasticism: Fundamentals and Perspectives By Paulo Augusto Tamanini This article aims to discuss about the rediscovery and reinterpretation of the Eastern Monasticism focusing on the Female gender, showing a magnificent area to be explored and that can foment, in a very positive way, a further understanding of the Church's face, carved by time, through the expansion and modes of organization of these groups of women. This article contains three main sessions: understanding the concept of monasticism, desert; a small narrative about the early ascetic/monastic life in the New Testament; Macrina and Mary of Egypt’s monastic life. Introduction The nomenclatures hide a path, and to understand the present questions on the female mystique of the earlier Christian era it is required to revisit the past again. The history of the Church, Philosophy and Theology in accordance to their methodological assumptions, concepts and objectives, give us specific contributions to the enrichment of this comprehensive knowledge, still opened to scientific research. If behind the terminologies there is a construct, a path, a trace was left in the production’s trajectory whereby knowledge could be reached and the interests of research cleared up. Once exposed to reasoning and academic curiosity it may provoke a lively discussion about such an important theme and incite an opening to an issue poorly argued in universities. In the modern regime of historicity, man and woman can now be analysed based on their subjectivities and in the place they belong in the world and not only by "the tests of reason", opening new ways to the researcher to understand them. -
