PENGUIN MODERN CLASSICS ORIENTALISM Edward W. Said was University Professor at Columbia University, where he has taught English and Comparative Literature. He was born in Jerusalem in 1935 and educated at Victoria College, Cairo, Mount Hermon School, Massachusetts, and at Princeton and Harvard universities. In 1974 he was Visiting Professor of Com- parative Literature at Harvard, in 1975-6 Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Science at Stanford, and in 1979 Visiting Professor of Humanities at Johns Hopkins University. He was editor of the Arab Studies Quarterly, and a member of the Council of Foreign Relations, New York, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Philosophical Society and the Royal Society of Literature. He has received Harvard University's Bowdoin Prize and the Lionel Trilling Award at Columbia in 1976 and in 1994. In 1998, Said received the Sultan Owais Prize for general cultural achievement; he became an Honorary Fellow of the Middle Eastern studies Associ- ation in 1999; and in 2002, he received the Prince of Asturias Prize. His books include Joseph Conrad and the Fiction of Autobiography, Beginnings: Intention and Method; The Question of Palestine', Litera- ture and Society; The World, The Text and the Critic; Covering Islam; After the Last Sky; Blaming the Victims; Culture and Imperialism; Representations of the Intellectual; Out of Place: A Memoir; The End of the Peace Process: Oslo and After; Peace and its Discontents: Gaza to Jericho 1993-1995; Parallels and Paradoxes: Explorations of Music and Society; and Freud and the Non-European. Edward W. Said died in 2003. -

This page intentionally left blank Contending Visions of the Middle East The History and Politics of Orientalism Zachary Lockman’s informed and thoughtful history of European Orientalism and US Middle East studies, the “clash of civilizations” debate and America’s involvement in the region has become a highly recommended and widely used text since its publication in 2004. The second edition of Professor Lockman’s book brings his analysis up to date by considering how the study of the Middle East has evolved in the intervening years, in the context of the US occupation of Iraq and the “global war on terror.” ZACHARY LOCKMAN teaches modern Middle Eastern history at New York University. His previous publications include Comrades and Ene- mies: Arab and Jewish Workers in Palestine, 1906–1948 (1996). He has served as president of the Middle East Studies Association, speaks and writes widely on current events in the Middle East and US foreign policy, and is a contributing editor of Middle East Report. The Contemporary Middle East 3 Series editor: Eugene L. Rogan Books published in The Contemporary Middle East series address the major political, economic and social debates facing the region today. Each title com- prises a survey of the available literature against the background of the author’s own critical interpretation which is designed to challenge and encourage inde- pendent analysis. While the focus of the series is the Middle East and North Africa, books are presented as aspects of a rounded treatment, which cuts across disciplinary and geographic boundaries.
