(425) 785-8094 CHEC [email protected] PAGE 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE SHIPMATES AND FRIENDS,

It was an honor to have served aboard the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14 along with so many fine and dedicated people. It is now an honor for me to serve as the Ticonderoga Veterans Association President for the coming year. I am extremely proud to be a part of this great association and share so much with our members. We just completed our 41st annual reunion in St. Louis and all that had attended had a fantastic time. The Spirit of St. Louis was alive and well! I want to personally thank Calvin and Julia Turner for setting up and handling the event. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and planning to have such a successful reunion. Bob and Karen Sexton also deserve many thanks for arranging and managing the hospitality room. Great Job !!

As the gavel was passed from last years President, Calvin Turner, to me, I reflect on the hard work and dedication that our past presidents have provided. This brings back to me a quote that Albert Einstein (a pretty smart guy) once said. “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means”. I have known the last 12 past association presidents and all have set a tremendous example for me to follow. Our veterans association is so blessed to have had these individuals as our presidents.

At our St. Louis reunion we had a group of veterans from V-3 division that shared with the association numerous slides and pictures that were taken during several Westpac Cruises during the 1960’s. It took me back over 40 years to places and events back into memory lane. This is what reunions are all about. Reconnecting and sharing. We will set up an area for slides and pictures to be shown at all future reunions. You are all encouraged to bring pictures, discs, and slides for all to see. Also on display, we will have 15 different cruise books from the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. I encourage all members to consider attending the upcoming reunions in Colorado Springs (2013) and Charleston, SC (2014). Don’t let these opportunities pass you by.

In conclusion, our World War II veterans attending these reunions, makes my heart proud. I realize that all of our veteran’s service is important and is deserving of the highest possible gratitude by our nation. I can’t say enough about the sacrifice that our veterans have made over the years, with many months of deployment, financial hardships, and family separation. Even still, the World War II veterans hold a special place in my heart. I know that this high regard is shared by so many others of our association veterans. Seeing our World War II veterans at the reunions, some in uniform, is very special. I’m actually teared up in writing about it. At the recent St. Louis reunion, Sara Moses, a Jewish Holocaust survivor from the Nazi death camps at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, was our keynote speaker at the banquet. She expressed that Allied soldiers and sailors from World War II saved her life and her people. Sara said several times, “you are my hero’s”. Mine too !!

I’m looking forward to serving the association, and meeting many of you at the upcoming reunions. God Bless you all.

George Passantino

PAGE 4 PAGE 5 USS TICONDEROGA VETERANS” ASSOCIATION GENERAL MEETING MINUTES MAY 20, 2012 Meeting was called to order by Calvin Turner and led in prayer by Rev. Andrew Jensen followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. An introduction by each person in attendance was given to the assembly. The 2011 Washington DC reunion recap was given by Ed Trotter. The four exceptional speakers were acknowledged and the Memorial Day timing was successful.

The 2013 Colorado Springs reunion preview report was given by George Passantino. The probable start date will be around May 23. George has been actively working with Armed Forces Reunions, researching independently, and will be consulting with Karen Lee. More details to come. Last year’s vote for having the 2013 reunion in Colorado Springs was reaffirmed by unanimous vote.

The 2014 reunion discussion was opened by Ed Trotter. It was proposed that 2014 be an East Coast location (Charleston SC, Jacksonville FL, Savannah GA, etc.). Ed suggested that a local coordinator from the association be recruited. Karen Lee may also be willing to coordinate. No motions or votes.

General discussion was opened concerning whether the association was getting good value from Armed Forces Reunions and whether it should look more to using internal resources like Karen Lee and member volunteers to coordinate. No motions or votes.

Fort Ticonderoga Museum – General discussion that the display is still well maintained and worth the trip. No motions or votes.

Hornet Museum ‐ Ed Trotter reported that we have the largest display room (by about 10‐times) and that we need to purchase some metal for screen frames so a planned interactive projection display can be finished. Labor will be provided if the association provides the metal for the frames. Ed also reported that we are still trying to acquire memorabilia from internet sites like eBay but have run out of donated money for that purpose. It was suggested that as new business the membership should vote on taking money from the Miscellaneous fund to be repaid by future donations if something important becomes available.

CG47 Museum – Ed Trotter reported that the Mississippi Maritime Warship Association, has submitted a plan for approval to move the CG‐47 to Pascagula as a museum. One issue is the need for a stage 5 pier. Currently an abandoned HS building is available and is planned to be used as a temporary museum to store and possibly display CG‐47 artifacts and memorabilia until the ship is available.

The Newsletter report was given by Ed Trotter. The newsletter is currently being published four times a year and a volunteer editor is needed. The editor just tells Gordon what to put in, Gordon does all formatting, etc. Ed asked that members contribute more articles, pictures, and ideas to Gordon Humphrey for the website and newsletter to keep them interesting.

The Treasurer’s report was given by Ed Trotter on behalf of John Williams. The proposed budget: President = $600; Secretary = $1,800 (up $300 for new membership cards), Treasurer = $ 300, Newsletter = $9,500 (up$ 300 for color and additional postage); Membership = $300, Miscellaneous = $3,000, Public Relations =$500; Total = $16,000. The 2013 budget was approved by unanimous vote.

The Nomination committee report was given by John Lunsford. The nominations for 2012‐2013 are: President: George Passantino Exec VP: John F Deasy

PAGE 6 First Vice President: Lloyd Frank Second Vice President: John B. Dupont Secretary: Dennis SaBell Treasurer: John Williams Sr. Directors: Art Avery, Jerry Cole, Charles Hill; John Lunsford, John Rochford; Doc Simon, Ron Lee, Al McDonnell, Joe McDonnell, Calvin Turner, Ed Trotter, Parker Patterson, Vic Godfrey. Motion to accept, seconded, approved by unanimous vote

The Secretary’s report was given by Dennis SaBell. Dennis is trying to get the roster and mailing list up to date and would appreciate volunteers to help locate inactive members and members whose newsletters were returned for bad address. He is also trying to confirm “dues paid through” and membership status (“lifetime”,” honorary”, “associate”, “regular”) by asking members to contact him if the information on their mailing label is incorrect or needs to be updated. There is now a link in the membership section of the website where a member can directly update his name and address information, or he can e‐mail Secretary(AT) BigT.net, or send a letter to Dennis. The newsletter can also be sent to separate Summer/Winter addresses now. Dennis can also replace missing cards and missing paid through stickers to show that dues were paid. He is working on updating the by‐laws and putting together a new member greeting package.

There was a general discussion started by Calvin Turner and Ed Trotter commending Gordon Humphrey for his work on the website, database, newsletter, and ships store. The members acknowledged Gordon’s contribution with applause.

There was a brief discussion concerning new and replacement items for the ship store. It was noted that we have a new mug design and the DVD sets put together by Ed, but we are a small quantity purchaser and cannot always order shirt sizes, etc. individually but have to wait until we have a bulk order . Calvin mentioned that Gordon is working on PayPal payment options. Suggestions for new items are welcome. It was also suggested that members could voluntarily include an extra dollar or two for shipping and handling even if not called for.

Old business: None. New business: Commended Calvin Turner and his family for their work on the St. Louis reunion Discussion as to whether the AFR $70 per person hospitality room charge is excessive and whether we should spend for reunion “gifts”. No motions or votes.

Tiger Cruise discussion – Ed trotter responded to inquiries concerning the possibility of members getting an opportunity to take a tiger cruise on a Carrier or Cruiser. Ed indicated that it would probably require an on board sponsor from the member’s division on the ship and that the first opportunity might be when the Eisenhower returns. Ed will try to get more details.

Ed Trotter and George Passantino opened a membership discussion with a plea that everyone work on finding and encouraging new members. George presented proposals to replace “confusing” “partial year” dues for new members with a flat $20 per year with no proration and a “one‐time” amnesty for past due members that would allow them to pay just the current year (2012) to get back in good standing. Other options were discussed briefly. Motion for $20 flat yearly fee and one time amnesty were voted and approved unanimously. Secretary and Webmaster were directed to make appropriate changes. Reverend Jensen announced the memorial service to be held on Monday morning. Meeting was closed.

PAGE 10 On the Death of Roland G. “Gil” Guilbault, Rear Admiral, USN, 1935 – 2012

While the Zen Master wisely tells us to let all men be our teacher, it is appropriate from time to time to recognize that there are a few men who offer superior lessons in life. Their official biography in life, which becomes their official obituary in death, will give well-deserving testament to the dash that separates the year from which they were born from the year that they died. And while these will faithfully record the achievements of better men they will often be incomplete and omit expressing the essence of such men.

Gil Guilbault was chosen to command some of the most lethal weapons systems ever conceived and manufactured by man. The Aegis cruiser, Ticonderoga, when it sailed upon the sea, was considered to be the US Navy’s most sophisticated, most complex, and most lethal ship ever launched. Gil Guilbault was chosen to be her first commanding officer. As rear admiral he commanded a battle force. Often composed of a dozen ships combining nuclear attack with cruisers and , the flag ship was invariably an aircraft carrier with an airwing aboard. Gil’s flag ship was no less than the nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. After retirement when men of achievement often aspire to serve on high status boards like community hospitals and museums, Gil chose to serve on boards that concerned themselves with the homeless and with disadvantaged youths who came from lower class neighborhoods. His own origins were not entirely dissimilar but he transcended them while not forgetting from whence he came. When hubris is often the stigma of powerful men, humanity and humaneness were the badge of Gil Guilbault.

First and foremost, he was a man of uncommon generosity towards all of us, and in my particular case, with his support for an untried writer of modern naval fiction. He was a man who came from humble origins to become a man of power, profound vision and sterling wisdom, and he possessed the rare ability to advise others when they needed to hear the truth about themselves, with sensitivity and tenderness. He possessed an abundance of what the naval service refers to as moral courage. That is to say, he faithfully gave voice to what he considered right and proper despite the unpopularity of the message or the personal risks to his reputation or career. It remains one of the cruelest ironies that throat cancer weakened his ability to project that voice, which so often spoke for others, but it in no way diminished the clarity of thought, nor the logic, nor the friendship behind it.

Despite having had great power as a flag officer, Gil was humble without being obsequious. His country trusted him to command some of the most awesome elements of American naval power with complete confidence that he would discharge his duty with restraint and the absence of any trace of a strut or swagger. He was the most authentic of men whose personal power emanated from his internal richness, which among other qualities, combined the application of broad intelligence with abiding faith and respect for the dignity of Everyman.

Roland G. “Gil” Guilbault was the donor of a legacy to all of us which can only be gifted by living it and exemplifying it in the daily intercourse of life. As surely as the North Star guides the mariner, Gil Guilbault showed us the proper course to become a better man. In the most Jungian sense, he was a father to all of us, and that explains why I am finding it so very, very difficult to accept that the time has come to strike his flag from the yardarm. I admired him, I appreciated his buoyant sense of humor, I liked him, I grew to love him, and I will miss him.

Francis J. Partel, Jr. from Vero Beach was honored to be included in Gil Guilbault’s very, very wide circle of friends.

PAGE 11 TIGER CRUISE ON AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER

How many times have you wished you could go back to sea for a couple of days on an aircraft carrier? We know some of you have and have mentioned it frequently. The Tiger Cruises on CG-47 only whetted your appetite. Next year there could be a chance to go on a Tiger Cruise.

East Coast cruises are usually from Mayport, FL to Norfolk, VA while West Coast cruises are from Honolulu, HI to San Diego, CA. When cruises are offered the first persons who can do the inviting are crewmembers on the ship and they usually invite a family member. However, those who do not have a family member who wants to attend can invite someone else (hopefully a TICO VET). If you get the opportunity you will have to provide transportation for yourself to Norfolk or Honolulu and then back home from Norfolk or San Diego. There are probably meal charges on the ship. There is a medical form that has to be completed but we do not have info on that yet.

It looks like next Carrier Strike Group to return is the USS EISENHOWER CVN-69, Strike Group and that will probably be next March timeframe. We will check and see when next PAC group is but it will probably be later in 2013.

Something to think about! For now, if you are interested get your name, address, rate/rank, years on board TICO and phone number an email address to John Lunsford. He will try to coordinate this event as it gets closer. John Lunsford, 2504 McNutt, Bakersfield, CA 93306-4469, 661-872-8850. Email: [email protected]

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

We have two jobs that are in need of filling (3 really as we still need a newsletter editor). The jobs are Historian and Memorials Chairman.

The Memorials Chairman is Under the supervision of the second vice president, and shall be responsible for recommending appropriate action in support of memorial programs already adopted by the association and to recommend and propose such suitable new memorials as are within the limits of available funds to honor veterans of the U.S.S. Ticonderoga.

The Historian is also under the supervision of the second vice president. He will keep all historical data pertaining to the ASSOCIATION. The person who is Historian should have adequate storage room for our historical files. While we are not sure how much that is it is estimated that the historian have room for 4 file cabinets of material.

PAGE 12 RE-CONNECTING – REACHING OUT

It is amazing the way that time flies by, and when you look back, it is hard to believe that so much time has passed. When you meet people that you served with at the reunions, after say 40 years had gone by, it is incredible that the conversations pick up exactly where they left off. It is timeless in that sense. Over the past 10 years, I have reached out and re-connected with approximately 25 shipmates that I served with. Initially, I was apprehensive, as I was concerned about how they would accept my contacting them. Concerns like, what kind of situation I would enter in, or what they would think I wanted? It is incredible that in every case, the reception was warm and appreciated. I was always thanked for reaching out. I encourage all of our members to reach out to former shipmates and re-connect. It will be very positive and rewarding. Send them a membership application from this newsletter. Invite them to a reunion. There is no better way to enhance our membership than to be invited by someone that knows you. We all have much to share. If you notice, the membership applications go directly to the secretary now, so we can get new members immediately signed up to receive newsletters. We are committed to mail four newsletters out each year (January, April, July, October). If you have pictures or articles that you would like published in the newsletters, send them on to me or to the Webmaster for publication.

I recently started corresponding with a group of Ticonderoga Veterans on Facebook. The Facebook link is USS Ticonderoga CV-CVA-CVS 14. There are currently 50 shipmates in this group and they are a super bunch of people. You can request joining the group by going on Facebook and having a member adding you as a “Friend”. I believe that you will find this informative and interesting. George Passantino

THE CHAPLAIN’S CORNER By Andrew Jensen, , CHC, USN

We appreciate the hard work of the Turners and those who helped them to make the Saint Louis TICO Reunion a successful and happy occasion. Sitting on the plane during my return trip home from Saint Louis, I reflected a great deal about our reunions. I wondered why we are attracted to a gathering of former TICONDEROGA crew members each year. Most of us did not serve aboard TICONDEROGA at the same time. In fact, most of our friendships have developed over the years with former TICO personnel who we have come to know only through our reunions. We hold in common the fact that we served aboard the same ship at one time. Yet the friendships are strong and meaningful enough to attract us to our reunions each year.

Friendships should be that important to us. A Friendship usually requires a common basis of interest and a deep sincere mutual respect. In an increasingly impersonal society, friendships are more precious than ever. Many of our conversations today, for example, are not even with another person but with an answering machine or an electronic device. Therefore it is good to be able to communicate with real people, especially those with whom we have a mutual trust and respect. Our reunions provide us with the opportunity to join with other former TICO men and women with whom we do have a mutual trust and respect. Good friendships are the most important ingredient of our TICO Reunions and will continue to be each reunion’s main attraction.

The Old Testament book of Proverbs states: ”Do not forsake your friend…”

PAGE 17 DON’T LET THIS BE YOUR LAST NEWSLETTER!!! We REALLY want to stay in touch! We know we may have lost some of you when we were unable to produce the newsletter every quarter! Some of you (like me) may have let time slip by and didn’t realize that your dues were not up‐to‐date and just don’t want to play catch‐up. Maybe we made a mistake and didn’t respond to an inquiry or didn’t make you feel welcome. Whatever the reason… Have we got a deal for you!! Thanks to Gordon Humphrey and a number of contributors, we have been getting a really nice newsletter out each quarter (with color pages no‐less). We have decided to, once again, send out this (July 2012) newsletter to everyone on the roster (dues paid or not). Our motive is simple: We want you back! At the May general meeting we voted on a couple of changes that we hope will entice you: First: We voted to forget about past due dues (this year only)! No matter how long it has been since you last paid dues, just send $20 for 2012 and you will be current (you probably received the April and now the July newsletter, so, you haven’t missed anything for 2012)! Of course you can always pay ahead for 2013, 2014, etc. at the current rate of $20 per year if you like. Second: Our dues year is now January – December and there is no partial year “stuff” to figure out. Simple, no hassle! If you or someone you know hasn’t joined yet, now is the time! Finally: If you haven’t been to a reunion or if it has been awhile, we are working on some really good ones. All the information will be in future newsletters and we send them to your door. So, what do you get for your $20? A hard copy newsletter four times a year (we can even send it to different addresses at different times of the year if you provide the info), an updated membership card or dues sticker for your old one, a copy of the by‐laws and a copy of the roster (included in certain issues of the newsletter each year), a part in preserving memorabilia and historical items that might otherwise be lost, but, mainly a way to keep the memories and fellowship alive by staying in touch! This association is dedicated to honoring the two 20th century Ticos and our shipmates in every way we can. We need you and your support! Check your mailing label to see what we have on file as your current “dues paid through” date (it is right above your name). Please let me know if anything is incorrect on the label or if you need your membership card updated or have lost it and need it replaced. There is even a nice link on the website where you can correct your roster information & pay dues! Hope to hear from you soon! Dennis SaBell – Secretary
