History Center to Offer Free Admission for Teachers in May -The “Smithsonian’s home in ” offers a safe cultural experience for teachers and their families-

PITTSBURGH, April 27, 2021 – In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7), the Senator John – the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh – and its family of will offer free admission for teachers and educators during the month of May.

All educators, including grades K-12 and college, with a valid teacher ID are eligible to receive free admission to the Heinz History Center, Western Sports , Museum, and and Historic Village from May 1-31.

"The Heinz History Center works closely with teachers in Western Pa. throughout the year and has witnessed the incredible job they have done under historically difficult circumstances,” said Andy Masich, president and CEO of the History Center. “As an educational institution that preserves history and inspires learning, we commend the region’s educators for their important work and thank them for everything they do for our children and community.”

Free admission for teachers in May includes access to the History Center’s new exhibition, American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, developed in partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

The timely American Democracy exhibition showcases the history of how we’ve voted, protested, and engaged with our politics, from the nation’s formation to today. The exhibit reveals how Pittsburghers and events in history have helped shape our democracy, including the , African American and women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, and more.

Visitors to the can step back in time and discover the world-shaping events that occurred right here in Western Pennsylvania. Families can explore how Pittsburgh nearly became a permanent part of Virginia during the 18th century as part of the museum’s featured exhibition, Pittsburgh, Virginia.

Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, a national historic landmark located in Avella (Washington County, Pa.), will open for the season on May 1 and offers a safe and fun outdoor adventure for the whole family.

The History Center, Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, and Fort Pitt Museum are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meadowcroft is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in May.
