    COMMON GROUND: THE SHARED INFLUENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ FUSION AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy Department of Music 2020 Abstract Blunk, Joseph Michael (M.M., Jazz Performance and Pedagogy) Common Ground: The Shared Influences and Characteristics of Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock Thesis directed by Dr. John Gunther In the late 1960s through the 1970s, two new genres of music emerged: jazz fusion and progressive rock. Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. With the milestone 40th Anniversary of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival spanning over five weekends spanning from July 9-September 19, 2021, Rockport Music leadership is excited and appreciative to be able to bring back music to Cape Ann. In addition to the chamber music festival, Rockport Music will host the Rockport Jazz Festival, the Rockport Celtic Festival, and as well as additional concerts starting in July. From Artistic Director Barry Shiffman, “This Festival brings a summer of hope and healing with five glorious weekends of concerts. Join us for a star-studded line up of artists as we celebrate our 40th season and look confidently to our future.” A full schedule of artists and programs are listed below. This year’s Festival brings several outstanding artists, including seven of the world’s greatest chamber ensembles, several winners from recent international competitions, and an impressive line-up of pianists. Returning artists include the Brentano Quartet, Dover Quartet, clarinetist Anthony McGill, as well as debuts appearances from Miro Quartet, pianist Jan Lisieki, violinist Tessa Lark and pianist Simone DInnerstein. Additionally, this year’s Festival also brings the New England premiere of Kevin Puts’ new work Home, which was inspired by the refugee crisis in Europe.

    Guitarist and award winning composer, Jim Robitaille, has performed and or recorded and shared the bill with jazz greats Dave Liebman, Karl Berger, Bob Moses, Joe Beck, Gerry Gibbs, Santi Debriano, Julian Lage, Esperanza Spalding, Oscar Stagnaro, Kate McGarry, Eric Wyatt, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, and has appeared on over 20 recordings and documentary films. His television and live performances include: The BET Jazz Channel, The Time Warner Music Choice Jazz Channel, PBS Television, The Baird Auditorium at the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C, The Bearsville Theatre, Woodstock, N.Y, the Berklee College of Music, Ryles Jazz Club International, Narrows Center for the Arts, The Wang Center, Boston, MA, The Knitting Factory and Smoke in New York, Quai Des Brumes, Montreal, QC, Canada, Gallerie Larouge, Quebec City, QC, Canada, Club Nectar, Zeiterion Theater, VT, Habitats for Humanity, and tours in the U.S and abroad. The Jim Robitaille Group's debut recording entitled "To Music" featuring saxophonist Dave Liebman, received international critical acclaim winning three international composition awards for three of his compositions from the recording. The CD was number five in the top ten list of 2004 by the Daily Ipirotikos Agon and the Apopsy in Greece and was the publishers pick for All About Jazz and the Boston Herald. The recording received international airplay and was #1 chart-bound on the Jazz Week Jazz chart. Awards include The 9th Annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Competition sponsored by BMI, The 2002 Great American Song Contest First Place Instrumental Category, and The 2002 Great American Song Contest Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting Award.
