Through their courage and sacrifice, these men and women have helped to ensure that we live in freedom and peace, while also fostering freedom and peace around the world. The Canada Remembers Program promotes a greater understanding of these Canadians’ efforts and honours the sacrifices and achievements of those who have served and those who supported our country on the home front. The program engages Canadians through the following elements: national and international ceremonies and events including Veterans’ Week activities, youth learning opportunities, educational and public information materials (including on-line learning), the maintenance of international and national Government of Canada memorials and cemeteries (including 13 First World War battlefield memorials in France and Belgium), and the provision of funeral and burial services. 849B FLIGHT now proceeded to the Norwegian Sea for Exercise " Royal Knight". This was more or less a repeat of " Northern Wedding" with "B" Flight conducting surface search missions and also giving early warning of raids coming off the Norwegian mainland once the ship was within striking range. The remainder of the year was spent in the Medi- terranean, where we once again met with the U.S.S. Independence. Following an exercise in which the two carriers mounted long range attacks on one another there was a cross operating phase, but un- fortunately "B" Flight was limited to one Gannet doing three roller landings on Independence's deck without actually hooking on. Just prior to Ark's visit to Malta the Gannets carried out a successful ship plot of three soviet warships which had been shadow- ing Ark Royal, but they were quickly forgotten at the prospect of a Christmas "rabbit run" in Malta. On passage home the ship visited Gibraltar for a weekend, and whilst there the Flight participated in the "Top of the Rock" race. The Officers were spon- sored by the Wardroom to carry the Flight Mascot —a large blue teddy bear called "Argo"—to the top of the rock, and although he finished 51st he did raise a useful sum of money for the Gibraltar Society "BALLOON MAIL" for Handicapped Children. Recycling of Ex-HMS Ark Royal R07 Disposal Services Authority Defence Equipment & Support Contents Executive Summary Executive Summary The former Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Ark Royal R07 ceased operational service on the 31 March 2011. Background Following an open competition against strict criteria (including environmentally sound management) Introduction for the recycling of the former HMS Ark Royal, the Disposal Services Authority awarded preferred Competition bidder status to the Turkish company LEYAL Ship Recycling Ltd whose formal proposal was to conduct the recycling of Ex-HMS Ark Royal at their Recycling of Ex-Ark Royal dedicated ship dismantling facility in Aliaga Turkey. The vessel was towed independently and departed Photographic Evidence from HMNB Portsmouth under commercial tow on the 20 May 2013 and arrived in Turkey on the 10 June 2013. Royal Canadian Navy Aircraft Carrier Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Bonaventure – CVL 22 21 January 1957 – 3 July 1970 Introduction In April 1962, the Canadian Government approved the acquisition of an aircraft carrier to replace Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Magnificent (CVL 21), which had been on loan and was to be returned to the Royal Navy (RN). At the same time, a decision was taken to purchase and modernize an unfinished Second World War era aircraft carrier. The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) set up a negotiating team to deal with the British Government and the Royal Navy. The RN argued that the contract to purchase the new carrier required that HMCS Magnificent be brought up to the latest “alterations and additions” (A&As) for her class before her return to the RN. These alterations were to include, among other modifications, an angled and strengthened deck. The RCN’s case was that these were modernizations and not A&As. Furthermore, the carrier being offered for purchase was being bought “as is”, therefore the RN must accept the return of HMCS Magnificent in an “as is” state. The Royal Navy was won over to the Canadian’s point of view and the negotiations were soon completed. A new project office for the Principal Royal Canadian Navy Technical Representative was established at Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the partially completed Majestic class, Light Fleet aircraft carrier, the ex-Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Powerful (R 95) was laying. Specifications With a length overall of 215 meters (705 ft) and a beam at the water line of 24 meters (79 ft), HMS Powerful was only slightly larger than HMCS Magnificent. -
