LIZ MITCHELL OF BONEY M. BONEY M. was not only THE disco cult band of the 70's and 80's but remains a living legend of the entire disco era. Originally founded in Germany by writer and producer Frank Farian, BONEY M. was one of the disco-oriented pop acts which dominated the European charts throughout the late seventies and early eighties with a string of hits well remembered to this day. Farian moulded the four piece band in the dance pop fashion, featuring the stunning vocals of LIZ MITCHELL, which proved irresistible to radio, dancefloor and partygoers. The original and only lead singer of BONEY M. was born in Jamaica and moved to London at the age of eleven. She always wanted to be a professional singer and with her mother's belief and support she finally got lucky; when working as a secretary, an agent called and offered her a leading role in the musical Hair . Liz accepted and moved to Berlin where she stayed for three years. After this she began working towards her original goal to be involved in the music business. Whilst in London doing a recording session Liz was asked to join a new band, BONEY M. This role launched her international singing career and the rest is history. The biography of BONEY M.'s hits is extensive. The group had eight Number One hits in the European charts with the following singles: Daddy Cool, Sunny, Ma Baker, Belfast, Rivers Of Babylon, Brown Girl In The Ring, Rasputin, Mary's Boy Child. Language & Ecology 2016 www.ecoling.net/articles Ecolyrics in Pop Music: A Review of Two Nature Songs Amir Ghorbanpour [email protected] Ph.D. Student, Department of Linguistics Tarbiat Modarres University, Tehran, Iran Abstract This paper is an ecolinguistic analysis of the lyrics of two nature songs – coined in this paper as ‘eco-lyrics’. The aim was to analyse the underlying stories that lie behind the lyrics, and how they model the natural world. The two songs chosen were We Kill the World by Boney M. (1981) and Johnny Wanna Live by Sandra (1990). In particular, the use of metaphors and appraisal patterns in Boney M.’s song and the use of salience patterns (through personification, naming and activation) in Sandra’s – in terms of Stibbe’s (2015) general classification of the ‘stories we live by’ – were looked at, in order to shed light on how the more-than-human world is represented in each of these songs. Introduction The relatively new discipline of ecolinguistics, as the name implies, aims at studying the interrelationship between language and ecology. Michael Halliday (1990), in his seminal work which is often credited with launching ecolinguistics as a new recognisable form of the ecological humanities (Stibbe, 2015: 83), provided linguists with the incentive to consider the ecological context and consequences of language. In his speech at the AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) conference in 1990, Halliday stressed ‘the connection between language on the one hand, and growthism, classism and speciesism on the other, admonishing applied linguists not to ignore the role of their object of study in the growth of environmental problems’ (Fill, 1998: 43).

WEA’S ROOTS DATE BACK TO THE FOUNDING OF WARNER BROS. RECORDS IN 1958 AS A DIVISION OF WARNER BROS. PICTURES. IN 1963, WARNER BROS. RECORDS PURCHASED FRANK SINATRA’S REPRISE RECORDS. AFTER WARNER BROS. WAS SOLD TO SEVEN ARTS PRODUCTIONS IN 1967 (FORMING WARNER BROS.-SEVEN ARTS), IT PURCHASED ATLANTIC RECORDS AS WELL AS ITS SUBSIDIARY ATCO RECORDS. IN 1969, THE WARNER BROS.-SEVEN ARTS COMPANY WAS SOLD TO THE KINNEY NATIONAL COMPANY. KINNEY MUSIC INTERNATIONAL (LATER CHANGING ITS NAME TO WARNER COMMUNICATIONS) COMBINED THE OPERATIONS OF ALL OF ITS RECORD LABELS, AND KINNEY CEO STEVE ROSS LED THE GROUP THROUGH ITS MOST SUCCESSFUL PERIOD, UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1994. IN 1969, ELEKTRA RECORDS BOSS JAC HOLZMAN APPROACHED ATLANTIC'S JERRY WEXLER TO SET UP A JOINT DISTRIBUTION NETWORK FOR WARNER, ELEKTRA, AND ATLANTIC. ATLANTIC RECORDS ALSO AGREED TO ASSIST WARNER BROS. IN ESTABLISHING OVERSEAS DIVISIONS, BUT RIVALRY WAS STILL A FACTOR —WHEN WARNER EXECUTIVE PHIL ROSE ARRIVED IN AUSTRALIA TO BEGIN SETTING UP AN AUSTRALIAN SUBSIDIARY, HE DISCOVERED THAT ONLY ONE WEEK EARLIER ATLANTIC HAD SIGNED A NEW FOUR-YEAR DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH FESTIVAL RECORDS. IN MARCH 1972, KINNEY MUSIC INTERNATIONAL WAS RENAMED WEA MUSIC INTERNATIONAL. DURING THE 1970S, THE WARNER GROUP BUILT UP A COMMANDING POSITION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. IN 1970, IT BOUGHT ELEKTRA (FOUNDED BY HOLZMAN IN 1950) FOR $10 MILLION, ALONG WITH THE BUDGET CLASSICAL MUSIC LABEL NONESUCH RECORDS.
