Spotlight on Sports Innerview guest Gordie Howe

Gordie Howe, “Mr. Hockey,” is a national treasure. The 23-time NHL All-Star is now 87-years-old and after suffering multiple strokes last year, had stem cell treatment this past December which markedly improved his condition, according to reports quoting family members.

Ann Liguori, award-winning host of the long-running ‘Sports Innerview’ series, had a lovely conversation with Howe in 1995 that can be seen on hulu.com for free.

Now all of his fans can hear him tell some of his most precious stories and hear his opinions on a variety of issues. The only player to have competed in the NHL in five different decades, from the 1940’s through the 1980’s, was as charming as ever off the ice. But on the ice, many considered him one of the dirtiest players ever. Howe looked back on his aggressive, physical style.

The 4-time Stanley Cup winner with the Detroit Red Wings also talked about his storied career, what it was like playing professionally in five decades, how much fun he had playing with his sons, how he depended on his wife to be his agent who negotiated his contracts, how he rebounded with his NHL career after a head injury landed him in surgery and what policies the NHL instituted back then that alienated him from the league.
