ICE HOCKEY PACKET # 23 INSTRUCTIONS This Learning Packet has two parts: (1) text to read and (2) questions to answer. The text describes a particular sport or physical activity, and relates its history, rules, playing techniques, scoring, notes and news. INTRODUCTION Ice hockey is a physically demanding sport that often seems brutal and violent from the spectator’s point of view. In fact, ice hockey is often referred to as a combination of blood, sweat and beauty. The game demands athletes who are in top physical condition and can maintain nonstop motion at high speed. HISTORY OF THE GAME Ice hockey originated in Canada in the 19th cen- tury. The first formal game was played in Kingston, Ontario in 1855. McGill University started playing ice hockey in the 1870s. W. L. Robertson, a student at McGill, wrote the first set of rules for ice hockey. Canada’s Governor General, Lord Stanley of Preston, offered a tro- phy to the winner of the 1893 ice hockey games. This was the origin of the now-famed Stanley Cup. Ice hockey was first played in the U. S. in 1893 at Johns Hopkins and Yale universities, respec- tively. Werenski, 24, has registered 65 goals and 124 assists for 189 points with 71 penalty minutes and a +13 plus/minus rating, while averaging 22:43 in time on ice in 335 career NHL games. Since making his debut with Columbus in 2016, he ranks tied for third among NHL blueliners in goals and 19th in points. He is the club’s all-time leader in goals by a defenseman, while ranking second in points and fourth in assists. “Zach Werenski has been one of the top defensemen in the National Hockey League over the past five years and we are thrilled that he will continue to be a Blue Jacket and the leader of our blueline for at least the next seven years,” said Kekalainen. “As talented as Zach is and as much as he has achieved so early in his career, he is an even better person and will be a foundational player for our club as we move forward.” Columbus’ first pick, eighth overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft, Werenski tallied 7-13-20 and 13 penalty minutes in 35 games, while ranking second on the club in time on ice (24:11 avg.) in 2020-21.

Center Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs and right wing Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets are the other two finalists. Werenski, 19, led all rookie NHL defensemen in scoring with 11 goals and 36 assists for 47 points with 14 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 78 games this season. His point total also stood seventh in overall rookie scoring, was 13th among all NHL defensemen, set a franchise record for points by a rookie and was the second-highest total by a blueliner in club history (51-James Wisniewski, 2013-14). Historically, he tallied the sixth-most points by a teenage rookie defenseman in NHL history. Columbus’ first pick, eighth overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft, Werenski played two seasons at the University of Michigan from 2014-16 before joining the Lake Erie Monsters, the Blue Jackets’ American League affiliate, in April 2016. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submitted ballots for the Hart Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists. The winners of the 2021 NHL Awards presented by Bridgestone will be revealed during the Stanley Cup Semifinals and Stanley Cup Final, with exact dates, format and times to be announced. Following are the finalists for the Hart Trophy, in alphabetical order: Nathan MacKinnon, C, Colorado Avalanche MacKinnon placed fourth in the NHL with a career-high 1.35 points per game (20-45—65 in 48 GP) to propel the Avalanche’s top-ranked offense to the franchise’s third Presidents’ Trophy (also 1996-97 and 2000-01). RETIRED STANLEY CUP BAND PLACED ON PERMANENT DISPLAY Stanley Cup band featuring the engraved names of its champions from the 1953-54 to 1964- 65 seasons preserved at the Hockey Hall of Fame TORONTO (December 19, 2018) - The Hockey Hall of Fame has placed on permanent display the recently retired Stanley Cup band featuring 12 past Stanley Cup champions from 1954 through to 1965. A new band was added on the bottom row of the Stanley Cup earlier this season to include the engraving of the 2017-2018 champions, the Washington Capitals. The next band to be removed and retired features the 1965-66 to 1977-78 Stanley Cup champions, and will take place in 2030.
