Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. I'm Special I I'm Special
!^W.'UJtf"-V^j! _j my I'm Special i I'm special. In all the world there's nobody like me. Since the beginning of time, there has never been another person like me. Nobody has my smile. Nobody has my eyes, my nose, my hair, my voice. I'm special. No one can be found who has my handwriting. Nobody anywhere has my tastes - for food or music or art. no one sees things just as I do. In all of time there's been no one who laughs like me, no one who cries like me. And what makes me laugh and cry will never provoke identical laughter and tears from anybody else, ever. No one reacts to any situation just as I would react. I'm special. I'm the only one in all of creation who has my set of abilities. Oh, there will always be somebody who is better at one of the things I'm good at, but no one in the universe can reach the quality of my com bination of talents, ideas, abilities and feelings. Like a room full of musical instruments, some may excel alone, but none can match the symphony of sound when all are played together. I'm a symphony. Through all of eternity no one will ever look, talk, walk, think or do like me. I'm special. I'm rare. And in rarity there is great value. Because of my great rare value, I need not attempt to imitate others. I willl accept - yes, celebrate - my differences. -

Press Contact: Alyssa Hall Harris Interactive, Inc. 212-539-9749 [email protected] Michael Jordan Tops List of Greatest Sports Stars of All Time Tiger Woods and Babe Ruth are number 2 and 3 on list New York, N.Y. — October 28, 2009 — The debates are legendary – who is the greatest baseball player of all time? Tiger versus Nicklaus? Well, when those adults who follow at least one sport are asked which two are the greatest sports stars of all time, basketball legend Michael Jordan comes in at number one followed by Tiger Woods at number two and the man who “built” a stadium, Babe Ruth comes in at number three. These are some of the results of The Harris Poll ® of 2,293 adults, of whom 1,494 follow at least one sport, surveyed online between October 5 and 12, 2009 by Harris Interactive ®. The man who called himself “the greatest”, boxer Mohammed Ali is number 4, while quarterback Brett Favre who has yet to stay retired is number five on the greatest sport star list. Next on the top ten are another quarterback, Joe Montana at number 6 and hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky at number 7. There is still another quarterback, Peyton Manning , tied for number 8 along with baseball’s Ted Williams. Finally, tied for number 10 are baseball’s Hank Aaron and basketball phenomenon LeBron James. This top ten list (actually 11 because of the tie for number 10) includes 3 baseball players, 3 football players and two basketball players. Greatest baseball player Each sport is different, so each sport has different players that are deemed the greatest. -
