As part of the draft Development Plan, a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), an Appropriate Assessment (AA) and a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) were undertaken. The SEA was undertaken in order to comply with the SEA Directive and transposing Regulations, and the Environmental Report which accompanied the Draft Plan contained the findings of this assessment. An Appropriate Assessment was also undertaken on the Draft Plan in order to comply with the Habitats Directive and transposing Regulations and a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment was also undertaken to comply with the Flood Risk Management Guidelines. The Draft Plan and associated environmental assessments, including those relating to SEA, AA and SFRA processes were placed on public display from the 1st of October 2015 - 11th December 2015, and submissions were invited. -

FOREWORD The National Graves Association deserves praise and congratulations for its effort in making available this permanent record of Patriot Graves in and around Dub lin, and of the places where many met their deaths in the struggle for national liberty. It is to be hoped that this initial effort is the first instalment of what will be a permanent All-Ireland record. The work deserves the fullest support of all who wish the sacrifices made to be properly recorded, ‘ and it is certain to receive due recognition, not only in Ireland, but amongst our people abroad. I would appeal especially to Eepublicans to give this project their active support. While we profess a reverence for the names and memories of our heroes and martyrs, we sometimes fall short in giving positive evidence of this feeling, as is shown by neglect of many of their resting-places, or of the spots where they met their deaths at the hands of the enemy. Many of the graves of our National Dead are unmarked; some are only vaguely known, while others are entirely unknown. The graves of the soldiers of the Eepublic of Ireland, who gave their lives in recent times, are sometimes untended. Such neglect is contrary to the general belief which credits us with great reverence for our dead. This is a lapse from duty which the National Graves Association is seeking to have remedied. -

The British Library ‘Circe’ Notesheet 6 Conclusion The Afterlives of Joyce’s ‘Alphabetical Notebook’ Luca Crispi INTRODUCTION One of the most remarkable and productive notebooks James Joyce ever compiled is his so-called ‘Alphabetical Notebook’ (Cornell MS 25).1 Not only did he first use it to continue writing and revising Chapter V of A Portrait, he also relied on it to revise, restructure, and radically transform Chapters I, II, and V. More fully than anything else that survives, the notebook indicates that Joyce intended to write a series of scenes for a more expansive version of A Portrait that he chose not to include in the published work. He most likely also wrote still more scenes specifically for the first episode of Ulysses in 1914 and 1915 also based on entries he drew from the ‘Alphabetical Notebook’. -

This book examines the relationship of Dublin to Ireland’s social history through the VISUAL CULTURE, MODERNITY AND THE city’s visual culture. Through specific case studies of Dublin’s streetscapes, REPRESENTATION OF URBAN SPACE architecture and sculpture and its depiction in literature, photography and cinema, the contributors discuss the significance of visual experiences and representations of the city to our understanding of Irish cultural life, both past and present. Drawing together scholars from across the arts, humanities and social sciences, the collection addresses two emerging themes in Irish studies: the intersection of the city with cultural politics, and the role of the visual in projecting Irish cultural identity. 1 IRISH COLLECTIONS AT THE NEWBERRY Introduction The Newberry holds several thousand items relating to Irish and Irish-American history and literature. There is an abundance of material on all key events, movements and individuals associated with Irish history from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, though the library’s particular strength is in the nineteenth century. Researchers with an interest in military and political history are particularly well catered for, as are those concerned with the Irish literary tradition. There is also a strong collection relating to Irish-America, particularly focused on the Chicago area, and the library has numerous resources which are invaluable to all those with an interest in genealogy. Scholars interested in Irish poetry, literature and drama will find a wealth of primary and secondary material. There are a substantial number of books by and about individuals including Dion Boucicault (1820-1890), author of The Shaughraun and The Colleen Bawn ; Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1854-1900), best known for his plays The Rivals and School for Scandal , and Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), poet, playwright and wit. The writers associated with the Celtic Revival of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries are also well represented with publications by the poet and playwright W.B. Yeats (1865-1939); J.M. Synge (1871-1909), author of The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea ; George Russell (AE) (1867- 1935), editor, poet and artist; Seán O’Casey, (1880-1964) author of The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock and The Plough and Stars ; and Lady Gregory (1852-1932), best known for her re-workings of Irish folklore and mythological tales, and founder, with Yeats, Synge, AE and Edward Martyn, of the Abbey Theatre. -

REVISITING DUBLIN CITY QUAYS REVISITING DUBLIN CITY QUAYS: MONUMENTS AND THE RIVER ARTUR KUSIAK 4TH YEAR UCD 2016/2017 16203201 Dublin Quays area had been constantly changing during centuries. At the beginning changes were natural and slowly. Destruction and decay were visible in the city from the mid-19th century and the major problems, which were associated with this were modernism and fascination of individual transport. Architecture style was problematic, because it completely rejects heritage and traditional way of building the cities, replacing urban fabric with utopian idea of buildings in the park. Rapidly growing suburbs resulted in more traffic in the city, so this influenced the roads, that started to be wider. Lots of historical buildings ended the existence due to the car and individual transport. In other words, it could be said that car rolled over Dublin’s heritage. Gerry Cahill identified this process and its impact on Quays saying: ‘The quays were a comprehensible part of this urban tapestry until Dublin bureaucrats discovered the US concept of the urban motorway, and the death knell of the quayside has been sounding ever since.’ On the other hand bad condition of the city did not come unnoticed by people, who identify with the place. Great example would be Frank McDonald, who over the time wrote hundreds of articles, as an journalist for The Irish Times, to highlight the problems of Dublin.
