Drawings 48 drawings of a variety of locomotives, rolling stock and infrastructure of the railways of Colonel Stephens are now available. We once again welcomed OkeRAIL and heard about their hard work to secure a daily train service between Okehampton and Exeter. News that radio communication masts were to be installed was a promising sign. Then on 30th January 2018 the Secretary of State for Transport sent a letter to South West MPs to update them on rail in the South West. It included a statement saying that, ‘……we have instructed GWR to prepare plans to introduce regular train services to Okehampton, with the objective of securing a credible and costed plan for delivering an all-week, all-year round train service between Exeter and Okehampton as soon as reasonably practicable’. A similar statement is in Section 4.3 of the Department of Transport issued report, ‘South West Peninsula strategic rail blueprint: government response’. This also says, ‘We also expect GWR to play its full part in supporting the development of local proposals for other service enhancements such as between Exeter and Axminster/Honiton (Devon Metro), and in longer term proposals such as the potential scheme to reopen the railway between Plymouth and Tavistock’.

Visiting groups included The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, Exmoor Associates, Dartmoor Railway, Tarka Valley Railway, Bideford Railway Heritage Centre, Ilfracombe Museum and West Somerset Railway. We were particularly pleased to welcome Frank Kidwell, Ilfracombe’s last signalman (pictured above.) There were some splendid model railway layouts as well, including Peter Hollins’ “Parracombe” and David Watts’ “Ilfracombe on the Quay” (below, photos by G Best) 2 TAW LINK NEWS Following an encouraging meeting in June, North Devon Council have kindly offered to provide local transport and demographic data in support of a pre-feasibility study. We attended the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway’s Autumn Gala on September 29 & 30, where our petition to NDC attracted lots of interest and more signatures. We have an update on our two core projects - The Railway Heritage Trail and the Barnstaple-Braunton Community Light Railway. There's a report of our first public railway exhibition and AGM. Combe Rail member (CR) Jon Kliem recalls his youthful fascination with the railway in Braunton, CR Tony Olsson solves a photo mystery in the North Devon Journal and artist David Halliwell explains how he created a painting from three source photos. NEWS Our first AGM was held in The Lantern Centre, Ilfracombe on 10th September. Original trustees Richard Heacock, Yvonne Hin and Dan Roche were re-elected, and new Trustees John Burch and David Luggar were elected. A healthy bank balance was reported, and Andy Hedges was appointed as independent auditor. An informal and enthusiastic discussion followed with the members present. The AGM was preceded by a free public railway exhibition in the Lantern Centre Great Hall. Guest exhibitors included the Tarka Rail Association, The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, The West Somerset Railway, The Tarka Valley Railway, Instow Signal Box and Braunton Museum. Visitors were impressed by the range and diversity of railway and railway heritage groups across North Devon. All exhibitors agreed the exhibition was good publicity, and we plan to stage another exhibition in September 2017 - hopefully to become an annual event. 2 RAILWAY HERITAGE TRAIL NEWS Pall Europe (who own the site on which Ilfracombe station stood) have approved our plan to install a replica of the original Ilfracombe Station sign.

There is also official notice of our AGM in Ilfracombe on 10th September, when we hope to meet as many of you as possible! NEWS Combe Rail was present at Barnstaple station on Sunday 17th April to greet the Tarka Tourer railtour - the first visit of an HST to Barnstaple since 1994. Our station totem fridge magnets (£2.50) were very popular and proved a good way of enticing passers-by to our stall. A second order of "Woolacombe and Mortehoe", "Wrafton" and "Barnstaple Junction" totems will follow soon. We have had 500 4-page A5 flyers printed (see left) for distribution at exhibitions etc. These are also available at Ilfracombe Museum and Tourist Information Centre. Groups are always welcomed aboard the UK’s myriad heritage railways and they do their utmost to accommodate specific requirements of each group. Disabled access is common, as is an incentive for coach drivers and tour organisers. So if you want to discover Britain by winding through moors, mountains, forests, open countryside and coastlines, where there are no roads and where the vistas are both stunning and unique to the rail passenger, consider adding a heritage railway to your next trip.
