There Are Reasons Why Canadian Blues Artist Steve Strongman Was the Maple Blues Award Winner for Guitar Player of the Year in Two Consecutive Years There are reasons why Canadian blues artist Steve Strongman was the Maple Blues Award winner for Guitar Player of the Year in two consecutive years. There are reasons why Steve Strongman consistently packs venues across Canada for his performances. There are reasons why he was chosen as one of Hamilton, Ontario’s "Top 40 Achievers Under 40 Years Old" by the area’s major newspaper. There are reasons why in the last three years Strongman has performed at major blues festivals in Rio de Janeiro, France, Switzerland, Mexico City, Memphis and Canada, including two appearances at the famed Montreal International Jazz Festival, four appearances at the Mont Tremblant International Blues Festival, and the Ottawa Blues Festival. Charisma. Verve. Passion. Unbridled talent. Since it's release in May 2012, Strongman’s new acoustic CD A Natural Fact has been getting regular airplay and admirable reviews from critics in Canada and USA, regular positions on the !Earshot and Roots Music Report charts. Strongman was also one of the featured artists of the week on popular roots music website The Alternate Root and featured on Sirius XM blues radio program B.B. King’s Bluesville, in the top 15 charts. In 2012 Strongman has performed for thousands of fans at festivals including Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival, Limestone City Blues Festival, Mont Tremblant International Blues Festival, Donnaconna Festival du Blues, Trois Rivieres en Blues and a coveted opening spot for the legendary Robert Cray. In early 2013, Strongman was the big winner at the Maple Blues Awards, taking home trophies for Guitar Player of the Year, Recording/Producer of the Year, (A Natural Fact, Produced by Rob Szabo), and the Socan Songwriter of the Year. Strongman led the National Maple Blues Awards nominations with six, including Electric Act of the Year, Acoustic Act of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year. He was also recently nominated for Blues Artist or Group of the Year for the 13th Annual Independent Music Awards – The SiriusXM Indies. Beginning his professional music career at the age of 16, Strongman has spent over 20 years touring Canada, Europe and, more recently, South America. Along the way he’s been chosen to open shows and perform with Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Randy Bachman, Roy Clark, Otis Clay, Jeff Healey, Sonny Landreth, and British legend, Joe Cocker, to name a few.     GUITAR MIKEY TIMELINE 1969 At the age of 5 receives a stack of 45 rpm records. By the age of 6 he finds himself recording himself singing along the records on his dad’s cassette recorder. Songs included “Kansas City” by Trini Lopez. 1976 First Television Appearances At Age 11 Mike McMillan AKA Guitar Mikey at age 11 starts The Young Canadian Blues Band. He makes several appearances with the 3 member band on a local cable show performing some 50's rock'n'roll classics as well as Johnny Winter's "Mean Town Blues". At age 11 Mike attends a Muddy Waters concert by himself. His father returns at the end of the show to pick him up. He is nowhere to be found. Eventually as Mike's dad continues to circle the auditorium he finds Mike exiting the stage door where he had been hanging out with the man himself, Muddy Waters. First Working Band Mike had just turned 12 when he joined his first working band "Phoenix". They would play local high school dances. He would continue performing as a guitar player playing in rock bands while all the time really wanting to play blues. 1980 Steel City Blues Band Mike realized that if he was going to play blues, he would have to front a band as the singer. So he began to sing blues imitating his childhood idol Johnny Winter. The familiar growling style would work for the time being. However Mike's singing would eventually grow into something all his own. He started The Steel City Blues Band.
