Finally, it has been a privilege to work and study with my fellow classmates. v ABSTRACT This thesis is an examination of Formative period obsidian artifacts (1400 to 400 cal BC) from San Andrés, a subsidiary site located five kilometers northeast of the major ceremonial center of La Venta in westernmost Tabasco, Mexico. The primary objectives of the analysis were to determine the source and the method of manufacture of each piece in the collection (636 pieces). An examination of use-wear patterns and an evaluation of the relationships of the artifacts to associated cultural material were used to infer the functions of the obsidian specimens. The data produced by the analysis are significant because they provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the social, political, and economic interaction between La Venta, a prominent Middle Formative period urban core, and San Andrés, an agriculturally based site within the polity’s riverine support network. Obsidian is not native to the region, therefore, examination of the acquisition, production, redistribution, and use of this exotic material can offer evidence of societal organization along the southern Gulf Coast during the Formative period. Compositional testing of 32 selected specimens using neutron activation analysis identified nine sources present at San Andrés; the results were extrapolated to the remainder of the collection through macroscopic visual identification. Paredón, in Hidalgo, Mexico, and San Martín xii Jilotepeque, in the Guatemala Highlands, were the dominant sources through four Formative period occupational periods extending from 1400 to 400 cal BC. These two sources demonstrate long term traditions of obsidian acquisition by residents of San Andrés. The modest quantity of obsidian recovered at the site (504.8 grams) reinforces a regional pattern that indicates that relatively small amounts of obsidian were used during the Formative period. A lack of production debitage at San Andrés and the presence of obsidian workshops at La Venta suggest that the importation of the raw material was controlled by elite factions in the La Venta urban center. Prismatic blades appear to have been produced at La Venta and were the standard item distributed to San Andrés, where residents later recycled the limited lithic material and extended its use-life through bipolar reduction. Changes over time in the quantity of obsidian recovered at the site correspond to population fluctuations associated with the rise, reign, and ruin of La Venta as an urban center. The obsidian implements, in combination with artifactual, botanical, and faunal material, indicate a pattern of feasting events associated with elite factions. Additionally, an interpretation of the primary obsidian sources may indicate the existence of two separate trade networks: one connected the La Venta and San Andrés area to the northern Basin of Mexico, by way of El Viejón, Veracruz, and the other linked them to the Upper Grijalva River Basin and Highland Guatemala through the site of San Isidro, Chiapas. The oldest mirrors found in America are from the Incas, made about 800 years before the Olmecs, dated from findings in archaeological sites in Peru. How this technology would have been extended to the north, appearing within the Olmecs, later within the Teotihuacan civilization, a few centuries before the Spanish colonization, is an interesting matter. Mirrors are important also within the Aztec civilization, that appeared in the proximity of the Olmec and Teotihuacan domains at about the time of their extintion. The extension of the geographic area where these mirrors were employed seems to us not entirely well-known.

Inscrito en diciembre de 1998 en la lista de Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, este municipio se ubica en la rivera del Río Papaloapan. Se le conoce como el lugar de origen de la identidad jarocha comúnmente aceptada. Debido a su clima y a su condición semi-tropical, la arquitectura que ahí se creó fue la respuesta lógica a dichas condicionantes a lo largo de la colonia y época independiente. The ancient Chinese teachers of Daoism likewise urged their followers to abandon the structured and demanding world of urban and civilized life and to immerse themselves in the eternal patterns of the natural order. It is a strange paradox that we count the creation of civilization among the major achievements of humankind and yet people within these civilizations have often sought to escape the constraints, artificiality, hierarchies, and other discontents of city living.

They are located primarily in undisturbed areas of humid montane, pine-oak and tropical humid forests, which are all ecosystems threatened by deforestation and fragmentation. The objective of this study was to evaluate and understand the distribution and conservation status of species of this genus in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Using Maxent, probability distributions were modeled based on 173 herbarium specimens (25% from recent collections by the authors and/or collaborators), considering factors such as climate, elevation and vegetation cover. Additionally, anthropogenic impacts on the original habitat of each species were analyzed in order to assign threatened categories based on IUCN classifications at regional levels. Results show that potential distributions are located in the montane regions of the central and southern parts of the state. More recently, there has been discussion concerning what is actually being depicted through this Mesoamerican art form. Olmecs: Where the Sidewalk Begins By Jeffrey Benson Western Oregon University An In Depth Look at the Olmec Controversy Mother Culture or Sister Culture 1 The discovery of the Olmecs has caused archeologists, scientists, historians and scholars from various fields to reevaluate the research of the Olmecs on account of the highly discussed and argued areas of debate that surround the people known as the Olmecs. Given that the Olmecs have only been studied in a more thorough manner for only about a half a century, today we have been able to study this group with more overall gathered information of Mesoamerica and we have been able to take a more technological approach to studying the Olmecs. The studies of the Olmecs reveals much information about who these people were, what kind of a civilization they had, but more importantly the studies reveal a linkage between the Olmecs as a mother culture to later established civilizations including the Mayas, Teotihuacan and other various city- states of Mesoamerica.
