Conard 2011: Fire History and Climate Change. Report Submitted to the Joint Fire Science Program for Project 09‐2‐01‐09. 215 pages + 6 Appendices Abstract This report synthesizes available fire history and climate change scientific knowledge to aid managers with fire decisions in the face of ongoing 21st Century climate change. Fire history and climate change (FHCC) have been ongoing for over 400 million years of Earth history, but increasing human influences during the Holocene epoch have changed both climate and fire regimes. We describe basic concepts of climate science and explain the causes of accelerating 21st Century climate change. Fire regimes and ecosystem classifications serve to unify ecological and climate factors influencing fire, and are useful for applying fire history and climate change information to specific ecosystems. Variable and changing patterns of climate‐fire interaction occur over different time and space scales that shape use of FHCC knowledge. Ecosystem differences in fire regimes, climate change and available fire history mean using an ecosystem specific view will be beneficial when applying FHCC knowledge. Authors William T. COMMENTS ON TWO NAMES IN AN EARLY UTAH FLORA James L. Reveal' Abstract.— Two new varieties described by Durand in 1859 from the Great Salt Lake area of northern Utah are discussed. One. Erysimum asperum var. purshii. is the oldest available name for the western United States variant of the species, while the second name, Acerates decurnbens var. erecta, is a synonym of Asclepias asperula. Neither name has been included in botanical reference works nor in monographic studies. One new combination, Erysimum, asperum var. amoenum, is proposed for the orange-flowered phase of the species found in southern Colorado and Utah. In 1859, Elias Durand of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia published an article entitled "A sketch of the botany of the basin of the Great Salt Lake of Utah," in which he summarized the flora based on collections made by John C.

  • Renaissance Walking Tour 4
King François I, France’s “Renaissance Prince”, and his Italian-born daughter-in- law Catherine de Medici, dominated 16th-century France both politically and architecturally. François I had his hand in buildings of every kind from the Louvre palace, to the huge church of Saint-Eustache, to the Paris city hall, the Hôtel de Ville. You’ll visit these sites on this tour. Catherine de Medici shared her father-in-law’s passion for building, although almost none of her construction projects survived. But you can and will visit the Colonne de l’Horoscope, a strange remnant of what was once Catherine’s grand Renaissance palace just to the west of Les Halles market. From there, the walk takes you through the bustling Les Halles quarter, stopping to admire the elegant Renaissance-style Fontaine des Innocents and the beautifully restored Tour Saint-Jacques. The walk ends in the trendy Marais, where three Renaissance style mansions can still be admired today. Start: Louvre (Métro: Palais-Royal/Musée du Louvre) Finish: Hôtel Carnavalet/ Musée de l’Histoire de Paris (Métro: Saint-Paul) Distance: 3 miles Time: 3 - 3.5 hours Best Days: Tuesday - Sunday Copyright © Ann Branston 2011 HISTORY Religious wars dominated the age of Catherine de Medici and her three Politics and Economics sons. As the Protestant reformation spread in France, animosities and hostilities between Protestants and Catholics grew, spurred on by old family The sixteenth century was a tumultuous time in France. The country was nearly feuds and ongoing political struggles. In 1562, the Huguenots (as French bankrupted by wars in Italy and torn apart repeatedly by internal political intrigue Protestants were called) initiated the first of eight religious civil wars.

  • Appendix I Lunar and Martian Nomenclature
APPENDIX I LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE A large number of names of craters and other features on the Moon and Mars, were accepted by the IAU General Assemblies X (Moscow, 1958), XI (Berkeley, 1961), XII (Hamburg, 1964), XIV (Brighton, 1970), and XV (Sydney, 1973). The names were suggested by the appropriate IAU Commissions (16 and 17). In particular the Lunar names accepted at the XIVth and XVth General Assemblies were recommended by the 'Working Group on Lunar Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr D. H. Menzel. The Martian names were suggested by the 'Working Group on Martian Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr G. de Vaucouleurs. At the XVth General Assembly a new 'Working Group on Planetary System Nomenclature' was formed (Chairman: Dr P. M. Millman) comprising various Task Groups, one for each particular subject. Because at the recent General Assemblies some small changes, or corrections, were made, the complete list of Lunar and Martian Topographic Features is published here. OF LABOR ORGANIZATIONS IN MASSACHUSETTS, 1?63 With Statistics of Membership 1961-62-63 INTRODUCTION The material here presented constitutes the Fifty-Eighth Directory of Labor Organizations in Massachusetts. The first Directory of this kind was published in August, 1902. The term "Labor Organizations" as used in this Directory is a group of employees or wage earners organized for the purpose of improving their status through negotiations with employers, except in the cases of employees of governmental agencies, the organization is usually a party to either a written or verbal agreement concerning wages and conditions of employ- ment. Since the last Directory was issued many new unions have been organized, others have become inactive or disbanded. The Department has quite complete records of unions in existence by reason of "statements" required by Chapter 618, Acts of 19U6 (Revised by Chapter 39k, Acts of 19U9). This edition consists of four divisions, as follows: I. " National and International Organizations" having one or more affil- iated local unions in the United States , (pages 3-13 )• II. " Delegate Organizations" consisting of organizations composed of delegates from local unions whose members are in trades or industries of a like character within a definite district, or of delegates from local unions in the same locality, not necessarily in similar trades, (pages 1U-2U).
