BMW Corporate Communications Media Information DTM 2nd July 2017 Second race, second BMW victory: Maxime Martin wins eventful Sunday race at the Norisring. • BMW’s 75th victory in the DTM since 1984. • Maxime Martin stands on the top step of the DTM podium for the third time. • Five BMW M4 DTMs finish in the top ten. Norisring. Following Bruno Spengler’s (CAN) victory in Saturday’s race at the Norisring (GER), it was another BMW driver who crossed the finish line in first place at the end of the eighth race of the year on Sunday: after 66 laps, two safety car phases and one red flag, Maxime Martin (BEL) took the chequered flag to claim the 75th success for BMW in the DTM having started from seventh on the grid. Martin backed up third place in Budapest (HUN) and second place on Saturday with his third DTM victory – his first since 2015 at the Nürburgring. For BMW, this was a fitting conclusion to a historic weekend at the Norisring. BMW was victorious in Nuremberg for the first time since 1992 – and, as was also the case back then, in both races. Marco Wittmann (GER), Augusto Farfus (BRA), Tom Blomqvist (GBR) and Timo Glock (GER) finished fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth to complete a fine team result, with five BMW M4 DTMs in the top ten on Sunday. Spengler came home twelfth, having been in contention for a podium finish for long periods of the race. Qualifying: As usual, the grid positions at the narrow street circuit were decided by mere thousandths of a second. -

Munich. 2021 is the final year in the development phase of the BMW M4 GT3, due to do battle for wins and titles in GT races around the world for BMW M Motorsport teams as of 2022. The new flagship in the BMW M Motorsport portfolio of cars has been taking part in testing weeks at the Spanish racetracks of Monteblanco and Almeria since the start of the year and in doing so has rung in the crucial stage ahead of the initial race appearances. Covering more than 12,000 kilometres already – which equates to more than 60 hours on the track – numerous BMW drivers have worked extremely hard on drivability and reliability, the objective being to significantly reduce the lifecycle costs and maintenance effort compared with the predecessor model. The close collaboration between BMW M Motorsport and the series developers at BMW M GmbH, as well as making use of the BMW Group’s testing facilities, both make an important contribution to the progress of the BMW M4 GT3. -

Hungaroring. Timo Glock (GER) and Bruno Spengler (CAN) finished second and third in Saturday’s turbulent race at the Hungaroring (HUN) after a strong catch-up race, which saw them claim the third and fourth podiums of the season for BMW Motorsport. Both drivers benefitted from a daring strategy with early pit stops, which paid off after a safety car phase. Marco Wittmann (GER) in ninth also finished in the points. A collision forced Maxime Martin (BEL) and Tom Blomqvist (GBR) to retire. Augusto Farfus (BRA) was in fifth place when he was hit by a rival and the resulting spin saw him drop right down the field. Qualifying: Augusto Farfus in the Shell BMW M4 DTM achieved his best qualifying result of the season and started the race as the best-placed BMW driver in sixth on the grid. His personal fastest lap time was 1:32.275 minutes. Tom Blomqvist in the BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM in tenth place also made it into the top ten. Maxime Martin (SAMSUNG BMW M4 DTM), Timo Glock (DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM), Marco Wittmann (Red Bull BMW M4 DTM) and Bruno Spengler (BMW Bank M4 DTM) followed in positions 12, 14, 15 and 17. On the so far hottest day of the year Martin Tomczyk, Mattias Ekström and Oliver Jarvis (all from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline) clinched grid positions four, five and six for Audi. The merely 2.3-kilometer city street circuit between the Dutzendteich lake and the Frankenstadion sports arena has always been difficult territory for the Audi A4 DTM. And this time again the Audi drivers are facing an extremely demanding task. “Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to work out a better starting base for the race,” commented Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich after the qualifying sessions. “At the Norisring, simply everything has got to perfectly fit together – and that wasn’t the case with us today. But everything is still possible from rows two and three on the grid.” After posting the fastest times in both free practice sessions the Audi drivers suggested the potential of the Audi A4 DTM at the Norisring in qualifying as well. Mattias Ekström at 48.334s managed to set the absolutely fastest time of the whole qualifying in the second segment (Q2). Posting a time of 48.379s, Martin Tomczyk in second place in Q3 was just a blink slower. -

And for the third consecutive time, Audi can secure the prestigious title – a feat no automobile manufacturer has ever achieved in the most popular international touring car racing series. In 2007, Mattias Ekström kept Mercedes driver Bruno Spengler at bay at Hockenheim. Last year, Timo Scheider kept his cool and did not give Paul Di Resta a chance. Both times, Audi had come to Hockenheim with an advantage of just two points. In 2009, the cushion is clearly bigger: Timo Scheider has 56 points to his credit; his immediate rival Gary Paffett has seven points less. Ten points will still be awarded at Hockenheim. Consequently, the starting base before the finale is relatively simple: Paffett has to win or finish second in order to thwart Audi’s plans. If the Briton should win, Scheider needs to finish fifth to successfully defend the title. If Paffett finishes as the runner-up, the Audi driver has to at least take seventh place. In any other constellation, the new and old champion will be Timo Scheider. The statistics speak in favor of the 30-year-old as well: Since Audi’s return to the DTM with a “factory” commitment, no driver has managed beating the leader of the standings in the title decision at Hockenheim, and the most recent Hockenheim track record of the Audi brand is impressive too: Four times in a row, the car starting from the pole position at the German Grand Prix circuit in the 1/8 most recent races was an Audi A4. -
