The Power of Images in the Age of Mussolini Abstract The year 1937 marked the bimillenary of the birth of Augustus. With characteristic pomp and vigor, Benito Mussolini undertook numerous initiatives keyed to the occasion, including the opening of the Mostra Augustea della Romanità , the restoration of the Ara Pacis , and the reconstruction of Piazza Augusto Imperatore. New excavation campaigns were inaugurated at Augustan sites throughout the peninsula, while the state issued a series of commemorative stamps and medallions focused on ancient Rome. In the same year, Mussolini inaugurated an impressive square named Forum Imperii, situated within the Foro Mussolini - known today as the Foro Italico, in celebration of the first anniversary of his Ethiopian conquest. The Forum Imperii's decorative program included large-scale black and white figural mosaics flanked by rows of marble blocks; each of these featured inscriptions boasting about key events in the regime's history. This work examines the iconography of the Forum Imperii's mosaic decorative program and situates these visual statements into a broader discourse that encompasses the panorama of images that circulated in abundance throughout Italy and its colonies.

  • Il Caso Italiano and Globalization
Il Caso Italiano and Globalization Suzanne Berger and Richard M. Locke MIT-IPC-00-015 The views expressed herein are the authors’ responsibility and do not necessarily reflect those of the MIT Industrial Performance Center or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 2 Introduction Twenty-seven years ago, under the generous and energetic tutelage of Fabio Luca Cavazza, a group of foreign scholars came to Italy as first-time students of the “Italian case.” We shared our puzzlement over this complex country with a group of more seasoned and distinguished Italians. In the essays we wrote together for the 1974 Il Caso Italiano, we tried to analyze a society where economic dynamism co-existed with stalemated and polarized politics. 1 Here was a country with a rate of economic growth second to none in Europe throughout the postwar years. 2 But at the same time there was a political system heavy with bureaucracy, tangled in clientelism , and despite rising radicalism and protest, apparently unable to reform itself . These politics entailed, as Cavazza put it—more bitterly than an outsider might have dared--- “un inesausta appropriazione di sempre piu estese quote della ricchezza che il paese produce.”3 At the level of central government, we found stagnation and the exploitation of public office and public space for partisan ends. At the local and regional levels, we saw a society riven by the dense and mutually exclusive subcultures of the Catholic Church and the Communist Party. The political stability of the country seemed to depend on preserving social and economic traditionalism: on a reservoir of electors that the backward South provided for the parties of government and on the survival of a vast preponderance in the economy of small and medium sized enterprises, which buffered the risks and shocks of rapid growth by capacity subcontracting and by absorbing workers who did not find regular employment.

Ten years of economic crisis urge to deal with the link between globalization and sustainability: is it a problematic dichotomy? The crisis has determined a step backwards in people’s living conditions, within a global context where economic relations, the availability of tools for managing them, the social equilibrium and means of production and consumption have completely transformed from the balance they had gradually found in the past decades. • Chapter 11. Cuba: Guerrillas Take Power
This is a chapter on the Cuban Revolution from a textbook, A History of Modern Latin America, 2nd edition, that I published in 2016. At the end there is a list of suggested readings, if you would like to pursue the history further. In addition, I will be mentioning films, documentaries, and other sources during the course, for those who are interested in deepening their understanding of Cuba and the revolution. ---T. Meade Chapter 11. Cuba: Guerrillas Take Power No event has played a greater role in realigning internal and external alliances, in reformulating national agendas, and even in inspiring change in the hemisphere than the Cuban Revolution. The events of January 1, 1959 had a dramatic effect on the US political agenda toward Latin America, as well as giving birth to a whole new branch of study in US universities. According to Stanford political science professor Richard Fagen, no one did more than Fidel Castro to promote the study of Latin America in academic and government circles. Ironically, it is to Castro and the Cuban Revolution that generations of US scholars working on Latin America owe their jobs. Even before the 1959 revolution put Cuba more squarely on the international map, the Caribbean island was a major contributor to worldwide culture, politics, letters, and economics. For what might seem a tiny producer for the commodity chain, Cuba’s output in the years before, and continuing after, the Revolution has been tremendous: major innovations in music, art, dance, literature, and political theory, not to mention rum, cigars, and baseball players.

  • The Origins of the Left -Wing Terrorism in Italy After 19681
TheOrigins of the Left - WingTerrorism in Italy after 19681 Mikuláš Pešta The crisis of the Italian Republic in the 1970s, which produced the large amount of both left‑ and right‑wing terrorist organizations, had its roots not only in the events of the revolutionary year of 1968, but also in the overall development of the Republic and society after the Second World War. Italy was governed mainly by the western- -oriented Christian Democracy (Democrazia cristiana; DC) and its leader Alcide De Gasperi, thus leaving among the malcontents not only the defeated Fascists, but also many of the communist partisans who wanted to continue fighting and establish the socialist regime based on the Soviet pattern. However, the Italian Communist Party (Partito comunista italiano; PCI) under the leadership of Palmiro Togliatti respected — unlike the Greek communists — the division of the spheres of influence, in order to prevent the civil war. The partisans reluctantly obeyed, but many of them still con- sidered the stance of the PCI treason. Togliatti’s party accepted the state and its insti- tutions, but merely as a method to oppose the system and it remained loyal to Stalin.2 For more than twenty years after the war, the country had been ruled by the DC governments (either solely or in the coalition), while the PCI had been put aside into opposition. The post‑war period is often referred to as an economic miracle, an era of sudden and fast prosperity. The investments of the Marshall Plan and the par- ticipation on the European integration project brought a rapid growth of the Italian industry and improvement of the living standards (e.g.
